From Our President The Year Ahead event Ivan organized at Camp Tuscazoar for 175 scouts. I can’t even begin to imagine how many hours it took to organize this event. All I can say is thank you Ivan for a wonderful year. You’ve been a great leader, kept the bar association strong through challenging times and have earned a well-deserved rest. COMMITTEE APPOINTMENTS As all presidents do while preparing to take office, I reached out to a number of you and asked you to serve on various bar committees – either as a new member to the committee or to step up and serve as chairman or vice chairman. Overwhelmingly, when I made these calls the answer was “yes.” This speaks highly of our members’ commitment to the bar association. In placing these calls, I made a real effort to contact and invite our young lawyers to get involved in the various committees. Again, many said, “yes.” If you serve on a committee with one of our young lawyers, please make them feel welcome. For many, this is their first experience serving on a bar committee and we want it to be a positive one so they will continue to serve for many years to come. Aletha M. Carver, WHAT’S AHEAD? Stark County Bar Association Presents Ohio Attorney General’s Charitable Board Governance • LIVE INTERACTIVE WEBINAR • Thursday, July 15, 2021 1:00 P.M. – 4:15 P.M. MINDING THE BUSINESS WHILE CHANGING THE WORLD (Including 15-minute break) REPORTING AND FIDUCIARY RESPONSIBILITIES Beth Short will discuss how charities strengthen our communities in countless ways and the volunteers associated with these groups are often passionate about the cause. Sometimes there is a lot less enthusiasm for paying attention to board governance, legal fiduciary obligations and reporting requirements. But charities ignore these important concepts at their own peril. If groups fail to take care of business properly, the entire organization can be jeopardized. This training will include a review of the basic requirements all charitable organizations have and provide easy-to-follow tips for board members who try to do their jobs responsibly in order to protect the organization and the beneficiaries of the group’s efforts. Statutory provisions that will be reviewed include Ohio Revised Code Sections 109, 1716, 2915 and 1702. Several provisions of the Ohio Administrative Code will be referenced, as well as several regulations handled by the IRS. Discussion will center on fiduciary obligations and the duties of care, loyalty, compliance and the duty to maintain accounts. ! Feeling Anxious? Recognize the Signs and Learn How To Cope By Scott R. Mote, Esq., Executive Director, Ohio Lawyers Asssistance Program At the beginning of the pandemic, in a short period of time, lawyers had to learn a new way to run their offices. We had to determine a way for employees to work from home, and had to determine who was an “essential” worker. We had to learn how to use Zoom efficiently. We had to schedule our work schedules and personal lives in ways we never had to before. Then, just as we were getting the hang of working in a different environment, the world started getting back to “normal.” Now, we (and many other workers around the globe) are returning to work, which is causing some of us to have anxiety. The first step in coping with anxiety is to recognize and understand it. Then you can learn ways to cope with it. RECOGNIZE YOUR ANXIETY it.
