The hea rt of Regina Health Center SPRING 2021 MISSION Regina Health Center provides compassionate d onor sp o t l igh t :: and holistic health care services primarily for Joe & Cindy Maurer: Faith, Education members of religious communities, clergy and Work Ethic Guide Charity and for other persons needing supportive Joe and Cindy Maurer were both brought up in services or residential families that put a premium on faith, education nursing care. Joe first learned about Regina Health Center (RHC) in 2009, when he was searching for a Catholic-based nursing home for his mother. He met with Sister Margaret Taylor, SIW, and learned Most Reverend Roger W. Gries, OSB, Cindy and Joe Maurer, and Sister Judith about Regina Health Center’s mission of providing Ann Karam, CSA. compassionate care in a faith-based environment. After his mother moved in, Joe quickly became involved with supporting RHC. As an avid golfer, he was a natural fit with the Holy-In-One Golf Outing. When asked about being a sponsor for the golf outing, he didn’t hesitate to say yes. He and Cindy have been involved with RHC ever since. Joe currently serves as the president of the Regina Health Center Board of Directors and is a longtime member of the finance committee. In the community, Joe and Cindy are active parishioners at St. Basil the Great Catholic Church in Brecksville. Education—and ongoing education—has long been important to both Cindy and Joe. Finding the Silver Linings a letter from the executive director In my last letter in this newsletter, I talked about how there is hope in the sacrifices our residents and their loved ones have had to make due to the pandemic. Even as the pandemic has gone on much longer than we could have anticipated, that hope still remains and continues to grow with each passing day. We have chosen to see the silver linings throughout these trying times. We received fantastic news on March 11 from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) that indoor visitation was once again permitted. There are still restrictions to keep residents safe—such as mask wearing and advanced reservations—but in-person visits and physical contact (hugs) are allowed. These easing of restrictions are due in part to the commitment so many have made to lessen the spread of COVID-19, as well as the high percentage of residents and employees who have been fully vaccinated. Regina Health Center was one of the first facilities in Ohio to receive the vaccine. By the middle of January, the second dose of vaccines had already been given. This also meant we were able to reopen our dining rooms to residents. To stay socially distanced, only two people are allowed at a table, but residents are still thrilled to be able to be with others and eat outside of their rooms. Our activities department also has residents doing activities together again, while remaining socially distanced. All of this said, we remain vigilant so we don’t regress in our strides with COVID-19 and can keep everyone safe, maintain indoor and outdoor visitation, and remain hopeful as we continue to take small steps to get us closer to an end to the pandemic. Another positive sign is our Holy-In-One Golf Outing, which is planned for August 19. Thankfully, with some modifications, we were able to hold it last year and still raise more than $215,000 through the generosity of many sponsors, golfers and donors. We look forward to a safe and successful event again this year at Firestone Country Club. Regina Health Center In our quest for a brighter future, we kicked off the Regina Health Center Endowment Fund in 2020. We’re excited to announce that we’re less than $100,000 from reaching Board of Directors our initial goal of a $1 million endowment fund. The fund provides a new option for Joseph C. Maurer, CPA, President donating to Regina Health Center and will ensure our mission and legacy of providing Karen M. Frey, Vice President compassionate care can continue far into the future. In our work to journey through the Sr. Kathy Andrews, CSA, Secretary David Simia, Treasurer pandemic and our hope for a return to normalcy, it’s easy to be focused on day-to-day operations. But, it’s important to not lose sight of long-term planning. Sr. Susan E. Bremer, OSU You’ll find more information about the endowment fund inside this newsletter. Please Bonnie Burnett consider making a donation to help Regina Health Center continue to make a difference Sr. Miriam Erb, CSA for a long time to come and emerge from the pandemic stronger than before. The Most Rev. Roger W. Gries, OSB Rev. Walter H. Jenne In the meantime, we’ll keep looking for the silver lining and celebrating the steps along John P. Klee the way to a brighter future. Lake Monica on the Mt. Augustine grounds Farewell: Bill Vorndran Exemplifies a Commitment to Mission for 48 Years There’s a long-running joke at Regina Health Center (RHC) that Director of Maintenance Bill Vorndran has been around so long, he was found by the sisters as a baby floating in a basket among the reeds in Lake Monica on the Mt. Augustine grounds. His story isn’t quite as legendary as Moses, but Bill has been working at Mt. Augustine—which is the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine Motherhouse—since 1973. That was 20 years before RHC even came into existence. Bill’s tenure at Mt. Augustine and RHC finally came to an end when he retired in early April. “We are sad to announce the retirement of our dear friend and beloved employee Bill Vorndran. Everyone here recognizes Bill for his 48 years of congeniality, dedication and service,” said Mark Yantek, RHC executive director. Bill Vorndran working at Mt. Augustine Motherhouse in 1989, four years before Regina Health Center opened. 4

For his many years of helping keep RHC in top shape, LeadingAge Ohio honored Bill in 2010 with its Excellence in Caring–Indirect Award. In addition to his full-time job at RHC, Bill worked weekends for the Broadview Heights Police Department for many years as an auxiliary patrolman. He also has had a lifelong love of airplanes and flying, and received a student aviation license. FULFILLING WORK Speaking about his time at RHC, Bill said, “I loved the diversity of the many roles and the variety of work was very fulfilling.” In a “resident caregiver spotlight” article about Bill in the spring 2014 issue of The Heart of Regina Health Center, he had this to say about RHC, “I like being here. You can’t ask for a more beautiful setting and atmosphere here. Everyone genuinely cares about each other.” He said he was very proud to be part of the planning (Top) Bill in 2018 in the heart of the maintenance department process in 1993 when RHC was being developed and with the boilers. Charitable Gift Annuities In 2020, Regina Health Center received several finished charitable gift annuities totaling more than $128,000. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, these finished charitable gift annuities were a particular blessing as budgets were blown out of the water. Low census numbers, staffing costs, PPE, safety equipment for staff and resident needs, updating technology, cleaning supplies, meal delivery containers and multiple other unexpected expenses all contributed to budget challenges. Charitable Gift Annuities (CGA) were the giving tool these donors used to support Regina Health Center. CGA donors donor benefit from receiving annual income during their lifetime and a partial tax deduction on their gifts. Going forward, a percentage of finished charitable gift annuities will go toward the endowment fund. The amount of the charitable gift annuity is determined by the size of the donation and the donor’s age.
