Published by Linton & District Progress Association 1 LINTON News February 2020 Brylees Big Heart Each year, since the age of 5, Brylee has been fundraising. She chooses a charity to support. We discuss ideas and what she wants to do. I then support her any way I can. She usually decides on a charity around October for the following year. Last year, around that time, she decided she wanted to support the homeless. She made lists and drawings of what she wanted to do etc. come January, she asked if she could change because of the current devastation regarding the fires. I told her, she can do whatever her heart tells her too. So, with that, we got to it. We had a discussion and she decided she wanted to do something out the front of our house. So, we set set up a little donation box and placed a sign. We had more discussion about what else we could do and came up with the idea of a sausage sizzle. I put a message out on Facebook to see if it was something that the community would support and from that, we organised it. I made a few enquires to ask for donations and was lucky enough to have some great businesses jump on board. Ausdent Ballarat, Midvale Quality Meats Mount Clear and Bakers Delight Sebastopol. My partner suggested to contact the local CFA and ask if they could bring a truck down. I did, and they were only too happy to oblige. I’d posted Brylee’s cause on social media, Brylee did signs and came to collect and personally thank the businesses that donated items for the bbq. She also did thank you notes to each of them and passed them on. The event was put in the Power FM site however I don’t know if was mentioned on the Pictured: Brylee Provided by: Tania Disney radio. Two days, minimal effort and an amazing turnout. Can’t thank everyone enough. We had people travel from Blampied charities. Published by Linton & District Progress Association 15 L a n d s c a p i n g F o r B u s h f i r e The location, type and ongoing maintenance of vegetation within a property can significantly reduce the impact of a bushfire on any house. Landscaping for bushfire is much the same as any type of gardening. It involves planning, designing, planting and managing the area around your house. Design and plant selection for bushfire can help reduce the effects of direct flame contact and radiant heat on a house. G a r d e n d e s i g n When modifying an existing garden or designing a new one, you need to consider the placement of garden beds, trees and other flammable objects. You should aim to keep the area around your house and other structures (such as carports and sheds) free of plants that can easily catch fire and then ignite the buildings. You should also separate the flammable elements from each other and the house itself. Garden design should incorporate the following four principles: Create defendable space Remove flammable objects from around the house Break up fuel continuity (keep plants separate) Carefully select, locate and maintain trees. C h o o s i n g s u i t a b l e p l a n t s Although all plants will burn under the right conditions, some plants are less likely to catch fire than others. Choosing plants with low flammability and locating them correctly will help reduce bushfire risk within a garden. Remember: While a well-planned garden is important, it is only one aspect of preparing for bushfire. A holistic approach to bushfire preparation is critical. Appropriate water supply, access, house construction and general property maintenance are all important. On Severe, Extreme and Code Rad days, leaving early is the safest option to protect yourself and your family.
