This affects access to St James Conservation Area and Lake Tennyson. The alternate route over Jollies Pass to join Tophouse Road is not recommended as it's not maintained and is in poor condition. Section Meeting – Andy Buchanan This talk by Andy Buchanan will describe his self-imposed five year challenge to climb 132 peaks in the Southern Alps which are visible from The Sugarloaf at the top of the Christchurch Port Hills, just above the Sign of the Kiwi. The list of peaks has come from a panorama sketch which will be shown at the meeting (extract below). The creator of the sketch is unknown, but it is publically available from the Alexander Turnbull Library in Wellington. The panorama extends from Mt Peel and Fox peak in the south to Tapuaenuku and Manukau in the north, including many peaks in the Southern Alps and the Canterbury foothills, as far away as Mt Cook and Mt Rolleston. Andy is a semi-retired structural engineer, who has climbed 107 of these peaks, with 25 peaks remaining to climb, many well away from Christchurch near the north and the south ends of the panorama. This talk will give more information on the panorama peaks, with many stories and photos of successes and failures along the way, with access by foot, by ski, MTB and 4WD, with many different climbing partners. 3
Are you our next trip leader? The club has a long tradition of volunteer led instruction courses and trips but there have not been many volunteer led trips in our section lately. We need volunteers to take people out on club trips, our club needs you! A club trip is a way to meet like-minded people and share some adventures. Most trips involve moderate to intermediate mountaineering objectives. It can be anything from tramping, rock climbing, a mountaineering objective or a backcountry skiing outing. The trip leader is not a guide or instructor, the trip leader organizes and leads a group of like minded people. How do you lead a trip for the Alpine Club? As the trip leader you choose an objective of your fancy within your level of experience. Then you take over the organization of the trip. This includes logistics, creating trip information including gear and clothing list for participants, vetting of trip applicants and leading the trip at the location. There are tools to help you plan your trip and fill out all the necessary paperwork on the Alpine Club website. Once you have an idea of what is involved, get in contact with the section trip coordinator. The section trip coordinator acts as a sounding board to make sure that the trips objective is appropriate, assists with any questions and makes sure that all points in the trip planning process are covered. The trip section coordinator also helps with the promotion of the trip and can assist with the screening of the participants. While this seems to be a long process at first, these are basically the same steps one would do for a well-planned personal trip. For anyone keen we are organizing a 1-hour workshop to go through the trip planning tools, answer any questions and simply get to know each other. Hope to see you there! 2019 Beginners Snow Craft Courses. For the 2019 season, the C/W section will be running two beginners snow craft courses with a maximum of 12 students per course. Non members can apply but must have joined the NZAC, and paid the course fee, within seven days of registering. For logistical problems in previous years, we will not accept anyone from outside of the C/W section on our courses, so please check with other sections of the NZAC in your area. Each Course has three compulsory parts to it, so if for any reason, you can’t attend all three, please do not apply. For both courses, we will car pool from Christchurch, leaving by 5.30pm at the latest (earlier if possible) , so it is up to you to arrange the appropriate time off required to be ready to go, be picked up or if driving, be picking passengers up by this time – NO EXCEPTIONS. 2019 Beginners Snow Craft Courses: Course Details: An ideal course designed for those from a tramping back ground, who want to get above the snow line, and learn the basic skills required for winter conditions. The minimum requirement is good, average tramping fitness, and the ability to carry a pack uphill for several hours on each day of the course. This course is not suitable for those with no tramping experience. This course will not cover the use of ropes in any way (including glacier travel or crevasse rescue). These skills are covered in more advanced courses such as the HASC (High Alps Skills Courses), which are advertised on the NZAC website. The course fee is $225, and refunds will only be given for genuine reasons, or if there is sufficient time to find someone else to fill the spot. What will be Taught: • Balance and movement on snow. • Ice axe and crampon techniques and use. • Self arresting on snow. • Safe terrain selection. • Snow shelters and construction. • Weather (Friday evening). • Trip planning and navigation. • Basic use of avalanche equipment* *There will be separate avalanche awareness courses advertised in the monthly section newsletters and we encourage people to attend these as they are a fully comprehensive, specific course. Course Cost: The cost fee of $225 will cover all accommodation at NZAC Arthurs Pass Lodge, fuel reimbursement to drivers taking their cars, Friday and Saturday evening meals (vegetarian and gluten free options available), tea and coffee, two days instruction, and free equipment for both weekends. You will need to provide your own breakfasts, lunches, snacks, and drinks (alcohol allowed in the evenings in moderation). 6
2019 Beginners Snow Craft Courses: Registration Arthurs Pass Lodge: We drive to the NZAC Lodge on School Terrace in Arthurs Pass. It has a fully equipped kitchen (pots, oven, toaster, utensils, microwave, fridge etc), shower block with two hot showers, flush toilets, living area with warm heaters, two communal bunk rooms, and a storage room outside to keep chilled food. There is cell phone reception at the lodge. For the lodge, please bring overnight kit – sleeping bag, pillow, shower gear, spare clothing and shoes. What is required: • Current NZAC member within 7 days of returning the registration form and paying. • Good average tramping fitness (uphill pack fitness important!). • To be able to attend all three parts of the course – evening session in Christchurch and both weekends in Arthurs Pass. • To be able to be at the evening meeting on time and leave by 5.30pm at the latest when heading to Arthurs Pass and car pool with the group (Students will not be able to travel on their own for health and safety reasons – No Exceptions. Trip Reports – Skiing in Gulmarg, Kashmir By John Roper-Lindsey, with John Henson and Grant Piper 83cm – that was Grubbie’s winning guess for the 24 hour snowfall at Gulmarg near the end of our stay. It went on snowing for another 24 hours at the same rate, but we’re not sure what the final snowfall was, as it was impossible to get anywhere near our impromptu snow gauge. You know it’s deep when you seriously consider putting on skis for the 50m between your room and the main hotel building! Grubbie (aka Grant Piper), John Henson and myself were at Gulmarg in Kashmir for 12 days skiing and ski-touring with 17 other clients and 5 guides. It’s a combination of skiing off the one gondola down one of the many spurs leading off the 3km ridge at the top, with ski- This was trying to get to the main part touring to extend your options or get you back of the hotel from the room! to Thecivilisation first thingatyou the notice bottomisofthat thethere’s run. no-one there. The first day there were the 25 of us, and about 15 other people. Which feels a bit odd, especially since the gondola base station has a seated waiting area for about 500. So even 5 days after the last snowfall there’s tons of untracked snow to be found. It turns out that the main season is summer, where Indian tourists flock to the area in such numbers that there can be queues of 2 hours or more to get one ride up the mountain. In fact it’s been a struggle to convince the authorities to open the gondola up in winter at all. There were a few hardy tourists, who get dragged around on toboggans by Kashmiris, or who venture out on skis hired out by intrepid ski-rental individuals who have one set of skis, with one set of boots fixed in place that they push around with one set of poles until they find a likely customer, hopefully with the right- sized feet. 8
Trip Reports – Skiing in Gulmarg, Kashmir What with an altitude of 3950m at the top of the gondola, colds and occasional stomach issues our ski-touring would be best described as “slackcountry”, but you don’t really feel you need to venture far to get to remote areas. The gondola provides a 1300m vertical drop, and you can add on another 700m at the bottom if you ski down a valley. We did that one day, stopping in a village for tea and cakes at someone’s house, before getting taxis back to the hotel. You can ski-tour over the back from the top as well, which we did, but you have to be a bit careful where you go as it’s pretty easy to attract attention from the ever-present Indian army. Even at 3900m they have a camp, which must be a nightmare to be stationed at, and we always were a bit cautious skiing past that, mainly because the camp dogs seemed pretty undernourished and keen to remedy that. The skiing was amazing – from alpine bowls and ridges, to widely spaced “paper” trees lower down to pine forests above Gulmarg. After the big dump we were restricted to the trees for a couple of days, skiing a few laps with the skins or getting taxis back from back roads. The super-deep snow was a joy to ski, especially since you could just about face straight downhill and wiggle a bit instead of attempting real turns. The standard of skiing of the other clients was amazingly high, including one Aussie ski-representative, so the pressure was on not to be a complete wally. And falling over in the deep stuff was definitely to be avoided, as you ended up in a hole so deep it needed major help to get extracted. Skinning was a bit odd, as the sides of the skinning track were hip height, so it was difficult to know what to do with the poles. Being a bit of a wimp I wanted my creature comforts at the end of each day and our hotel was a gem, old-style with wood burning stoves in each room that were regularly filled by a man dedicated to the task, including an hour before you got up, which felt a bit odd the first day, but you can adapt to luxury very quickly… LtoR: Rafi, one of the Kashmiri guides, enjoying the powder on a Guides day (Mark Sedon). Trip Reports – Skiing in Gulmarg, Kashmir Two of the guests got married during our stay. This was in the local Anglican church, left over from the days when the British Army were all over the place. Useful trivial fact – Joanna Lumley, of Absolutely Fabulous fame was an army child born in nearby Srinagar. The rest of us all attended the ceremony, and were provided with the cloaks (pherans) to wear, and even more importantly the baskets of hot ashes (kangri) to hold underneath to stop us freezing in the unheated church. This wedding became a big deal, and they became minor celebrities, with items about them on Indian news and a TV camera crew even trailing them during a ski-tour. Apart from the ubiquitous Indian Army, I felt very comfortable in Kashmir, but I guess there is a lot of tension under the surface. A week after we left a suicide bomber killed 42 army personnel, and there was subsequently a big clampdown on Kashmiri activists. Our experience with Kashmiri people could not have been more positive. Each of our groups had a Kashmiri guide as well as a Western guide, and they were really friendly and competent. Our Western guides read a bit like a who’s who of NZ guiding, with Mark Sedon, Dean Staples, and Lydia Bradey, but were happy to ask the local guides for their opinion, and they did a great job as tail guides, hauling us out of our crash sites and patiently waiting while we got our breath back. Kashmir is, of course, predominantly Muslim so there were some differences to what we were used to. Hearing the call to prayers booming out across the whole basin was a new experience. And I don’t think I saw one Kashmiri woman in Gulmarg. Gulmarg isn’t really a village where people live, and nearly all the Kashmiris live in a nearby village and come up to Gulmarg every day to work, and all the jobs are done by men. Kashmiris are quite fierce in appearance, and are very animated in their conversations but you soon realise that’s a deceptive appearance, and they’re very quick to smile and be very friendly. Bill Barker, who runs the company taking groups to Gulmarg, has been involved with Gulmarg since right at the beginning, training the local ski patrol and setting up avalanche hazard management. He is really popular in Kashmir, and he in turn obviously has a lot of affection and respect for Kashmiris. 10
Trip Reports – Novara Peak By Jen Ormsbee Trip Participants: Kate Salmon, Jen Ormsbee , Penzy Dinsdale, Rachel Smith, James Thornton and Nina Dickerhof. After spending Friday night at the Unwin Hut, our group of six had a leisurely start to the day. We were able to drive up the Ball road without too much difficulty in a Forester and Outback. We continued down the road on foot with some detours around the slide paths. We had a quick stop at Ball hut to fill up with water and then continued to Garbage Gully. Judicious route finding across the Tasman made it seem like a quick walk in the park. After gaining the moraine, we stopped for a brew and lunch next to a great boulder problem and tarn. The sound of helicopters punctuated our lunchbreak. The team returning to camp admiring Cook and Tasman. by Nina Dickerhof We continued our climb up through a combination of loose rock, tussock, and snow to our picturesque camp at 1800m. After clearing some snow, we set up our tents with a view of Mt Cook to one side and a tarn to the other. The night brought a spectacular showing of stars and the sound of the ice fall on the glaciers. 11 11
Trip Reports – Novara Peak Penzy, Kate, Gen, Rachel and Nina on the summit of Novara Peal. by James Thornton. In the morning we had a pre-dawn departure. We made our way up scree and snow and eventually watched the sun rise. Our chosen route going up the SW side brought us to a small rock step where we donned harnesses and used the rope. It was a quick jaunt to the summit after that. After some celebratory cake, we started out descent down the NW side. We reached our camped and packed up, taking slightly more time than our allotted 18 minutes. We descended the same way from camp to our lunch spot and had the company of a pair of paradise ducks. We gained some elevation to get into a better gully system to bring us down the moraine and then re-traced our steps back across the Tasman and up Garbage Gully. This trip provided a great introduction to the area, stunning scenery, and views of many potential routes for future trips. 12

Most of the trips are not technical climbing but scrambling at a fairly relaxed pace. If you are interested in joining us, please contact Pat Prendergast on 337 0079 or email pat@slingshot.co.nz Mid Week Rock Climbing A new and exciting format from September (day light savings start) onwards. Instead of one set evening each week, we are hoping to be able to offer people a choice of two nights each week, which will vary depending on who is looking after the group. We believe this will give people of all abilities more opportunities to get out climbing. A few things to note when rock climbing with the mid week group; • Helmets are compulsory when climbing and belaying (if you don’t have a helmet, please source one or talk to the climbing co-ordinator and they will try and have one available). • For those new to climbing and belaying, we can assist in this so please ask if you are not sure. • Two top rope kits (each with a rope, biners and slings) are available each week for the person in charge to use rather than their own equipment and for those climbers who don’t want to lead but top rope instead. Climbing will usually run from approximately 4.30 pm onwards, outdoors during daylight savings hours, or indoors in winter, or if the weather is no good. We also welcome and would appreciate people assisting from time to time on a roster basis rather than relying on the same people every week having to look after the climbing group so please contact Clayton if you are able to help out (it’s not too difficult!). If you would like to attend and are on the google climbing group already, we will email out at the start of the week with which nights we are running climbing and who is in charge and their contact details. Their main fundraiser is selling Bargain Books full of lift pass vouchers for various South Island ski fields. In most cases two lift passes are offered for the price of one, although some fields have different offers and/or restrictions. The Bargain books are $110 for the first purchased and $90 for subsequent books bought in the same transaction. They can be purchased through the website or from Snow and Surf, SnowRide, or Cactus Outdoor. There will also be a stand at the Annual Canterbury Snow Sale (Canterbury University Snow Sports Club) at the UCSA Events Centre, 90 Ilam Road on 18th and 19th May These Bargain Books are a great way to explore a lot of different fields at a discount, and a great way to help some less able people get on the snow. Notices: Media release 17 April 2019 Arthur’s Pass National Park Visitor Centre moves The Department of Conservation (DOC) has moved its visitor centre services ahead of a planned upgrade to the Arthur’s Pass National Park Visitor Centre later this year. The temporary visitor centre is located just up the road next to Arthur’s Pass Motel and Lodge in the national park village. Work will start later this year on the planned upgrade of the Arthur’s Pass National Park Visitor Centre to bring it up to 100% of the National Building Standards. “The upgraded visitor centre will be an exciting opportunity to help visitors and the local community to connect with conservation,” says DOC Operations Manager, Kingsley Timpson. DOC has been planning a full upgrade of the building for some time. Following the 2010/2011 Canterbury earthquakes, engineers certified the building as safe for public and staff use but with some areas closed to access. “Interim improvements were made to the building at the time with isolation walls added and new beams inserted to ensure staff and visitors were safe. “Recent reassessments of the alterations in the building have led us to decide to close it early and operate from a new temporary site to ensure there is no risk to visitors or staff.” 1.4 million visitors travel through State Highway 73 every year with 140,000 of them calling into the Arthur’s Pass National Park Visitor Centre. “The planned upgrade ensures the visitor centre will continue to be a valuable resource for the region,” says Kingsley Timpson. DOC’s visitor centre is open 8.30am to 4.30pm seven days a week. 15 15
Notices: Breaking the Ice, the story of the first year in Antarctica Antarctic Heritage Trust is delighted to announce a new exhibition that has been created in partnership with Canterbury Museum in Christchurch New Zealand. Breaking the Ice tells the story of the British Antarctic Expedition, which sailed from London on the Southern Cross landing at Cape Adare in January 1899. The expedition, led by Carsten Borchgrevink, recorded a number of Antarctic firsts. The explorers were the first people to spend a winter on the Antarctic continent, they erected the first buildings, took the first steps on the Ross Ice Shelf, were the first to use dogs and the Primus stove on the continent, and recorded the first full year of climate data. Breaking the Ice, the story of the first year in Antarctica (1899–1900), opens at Canterbury Museum. Christchurch on 18 May and runs to 13 October 2019. 16 16
Notices: New Zealand Alpine Journal – Digital Version 1892-2014 In 2015 NZAC accepted the generous offer of Claudia Posch and Gerhard Rampl at Innsbruck University, Austria to scan and digitise NZAJ 1892-2014, and to prepare it for access via the internet. More than 17,500 pages were scanned, and using automated text recognition software Transkribus, turned into machine- readable text. This generally worked well but created some problems which required further work. A crowdfunding campaign during January 2017 was generously supported by NZAC members and raised $8,800. Those funds enabled Innsbruck University to appoint Milena Peralta Friedburg to support the project and Milena’s work has been superb together with the NZAC volunteers editing the online journals. Readers have two options: you can search across all volumes using ‘Search’, and you can access single volumes via the ‘Content’ menu. Access by volume has an extended user interface where you can also view (and copy) the transcript. This is not the case with the search results page where (because of technical reasons) you can only see the page-images. A link to the digital library can always be found on the NZAC Archives webpage as well. Notices: Southern Hemisphere Alpine Conference (SHAC) 18 & 19th June 2019 | Christchurch, NZ What's it all about? The Southern Hemisphere Alpine Conference (SHAC) will be back in 2019. SHAC occurs every two years and is the only event of its kind in the southern hemisphere. The conference brings together snow safety professionals, commercial snow and alpine organisations, guiding companies and industry influencers for two days of collaboration. SHAC will provide you with the opportunity to engage with key industry influencers and decision makers. It contains more than 200 tracks for walkers, mountain bikers, and cyclists – and over the coming months, many hundreds more will be added right across the country. You can search Find My Adventure by region, by the type of activity you want to do, be it dog walking, mountain biking or pushing a pram. Each track includes information about the terrain, how to get there and any conditions you might need to beware of. The Commission has also updated its website with popular maps to help you find legal public access, hunting and fishing spots, as well as property information. Notices Global Rock and Ice Climbing Festivals: All in one place… The UIAA has recently launched a global calendar for international ice climbing competitions and rock and ice climbing festivals, for events organised by the UIAA, its member federations and partners or entirely independent meetings. It is an excellent learning resource and a handy reference for experienced alpinists. This is the 2018 6th edition of this manual and can be purchased online. Trip Guidelines An important part of the NZAC is volunteer organised trips. If you're thinking of joining or organising a trip, here are some guidelines on what to expect. Check out the NZAC Trips page https://alpineclub.org.nz/resources/organising-trips/ for resources to assist you with planning a section trip. Responsibilities of a Trip Participant • You are responsible for your own safety. If you are uncomfortable with any situation, let your trip organiser know straight away. • Be prepared to drive or pay transport costs (petrol, wear and tear) • Make sure you have a clear idea of the trip's goals and what will be required of you. Obtain a relevant map and know where you are going, the terrain, what gear you will need, and how to use it. • If you discover that you cannot go on the trip then let the Trip Organiser know as soon as possible so that another person can take your place. • Read, understand and return the signed copy of the NZAC waiver form to the Trip Organiser. Responsibilities of a Trip organiser • Trips should be fun for everyone. Choose a mountain, peak, hill, traverse, route, crag, or whatever and get out there and meet some keen club members! • You cannot be responsible for the safety of every member of the group, but you should aim to empower every group member with enough knowledge to make their own informed decisions about the proposed trip both before, and during the trip. • Choose a realistic goal for the time available and give prospective group members an idea of the amount of effort required. • Set a group size limit based on your experience, the goal, time available and group fitness and experience. • Let the group know what skills and equipment are needed when they sign up. • Provide the trip Participants with a copy of the NZAC waiver form and have them understand, sign and return it to you in advance of the trip. • Organise travel arrangements at the earliest opportunity and let everyone know how much they should expect to pay for transport costs. • Prepare detailed trip intentions and leave them with at least one responsible individual. • If someone on the trip voices their concern about the situation it is up to you (with the help of the group) to find a safe solution where possible. • Give priority to NZAC members • Find someone on the trip to write an interesting trip report for the Section Newsletter. Section Library Section Library Did you know that the Section has its own library and that unlike the National Office library you can actually borrow the books in the Section library? Every section meeting I will bring a good selection of the hundreds of books in the library, along with the DVDs. The contents of the C/W Section library can be found online here: http://bit.ly/CWLibrary (Note: There is a list of DVDs on the second tab of the spreadsheet). If you would like to borrow a book or DVD then please email me and we’ll sort something out. Library policies are pretty flexible – • You must have a current NZAC membership card to borrow • Books are generally to be returned within 2 months, but new purchases will be expected to be returned within 1 month. • DVDs are expected to be returned within 2 weeks. Return them to next Section meeting. 2. Drop them off at National Office and tell whomever you speak to that they are for C/W library. 3. Email/text/phone me to arrange handover some other way Volunteer Opportunity – C/W Section Committee The section is looking for a Volunteer to take on the role of Gear/Equipment Custodian. The role involves • Hiring of section gear to members. • Ensuring gear is available for section courses when needed. • Keeping a log of the gear in stock. • Running regular inspections and maintenance of gear, ensuring it meets the UIAA safety standards. • Purchasing of new gear when required. The Volunteer must have a safe and secure location to store the section gear and ideally hold contents insurance to cover the section gear (some reimbursement from the section can be arranged).
