April 10, 2022 Welcome to Holy Week at St. Paul’s! Throughout the course of a year, there are many days we set apart as special. But there is only one holy week. This is the most crucial week in human history. This single week consumes nearly a third of the ink of the four Gospels. The Holy Spirit considered the events of this week that important. During this week, believers slow down to ponder all that Christ did for us, from his humble entrance on a donkey ... to his sacrifical death on the cross... to his Easter victory. Christ sheds no blood on Palm Sunday, but today sets the tone for this week. Jesus came to be a king this world will never understand. He conquers his enemies by surrenduring to them. He crushes his opposition by being crushed. This is the kind of King we have marching into battle as one of us and for all of us. We are drawn to this King in faith rather than driven away in fear! The Service – Setting 2 Opening Hymn – All Glory, Laud, and Honor 412 v.1-3 (Blue) K5 - Grades 1,2 will march in procession with palm branches and sing their hosannas of praise on Palm Sunday. Blessed is he who comes in the name, who comes in the name of the Lord. Blessed is he who comes in the name, who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, hosanna! Come make a joyful noise! Hosanna, hosanna! Let all the world rejoice! Singing, singing, ringing, ringing, bringing, bringing praise to the King. Waving, waving, swaying, swaying, raising palms of praise! Blessed is he who comes in the name, who comes in the name of the Lord. Blessed is he who comes in the name, who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, hosanna! Let all the people sing! Hosanna, hosanna! Praise to the King of kings! Singing, singing, ringing, ringing, bringing, bringing praise to the King. Waving, waving, swaying, swaying, raising palms of praise!
Opening Hymn – All Glory, Laud and Honor 412 v.4-5 (Blue) Confession In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed are they whose sin the Lord does not count against them. Let us confess our sins to the Lord, Almighty and merciful Father, we have strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed what we have devised and desired in our hearts. We have offended you and sinned against your holy law. We have done those things that we should not have done, and we have not done those things that we should have done. Have mercy on us, Lord! Spare us, forgive us, and restore us, According to your promises in Christ Jesus. Silence for private confession and reflection. God, our merciful Father, has forgiven all our sins. He sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to be our Redeemer and Savior. Jesus paid the penalty for our guilt by his death on the cross and freed us from death by his resurrection from the grave. We have peace with God now and forever. Amen. Lord, Have Mercy In peace let us pray to the Lord. For the peace from above and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. For the peace of the whole world, for the well being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord. 2
For this holy house and for all who offer their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. Prayer of the Day The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. We praise you, O God, for the great acts of love by which you redeemed us through your Son, Jesus Christ. As he was acclaimed by those who scattered their coats and palm branches in his path, so may we always hail him as our King and follow him with perfect confidence; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Scripture Readings – Four things every Christian should know about Palm Sunday. 1. What is Palm Sunday? - Zechariah 9:9 “Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” 2. Why palm branches? - John 12:13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him. 3. Why did Jesus ride in on a donkey? - Matthew 21:1,2,7 3
Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there. Untie it and bring it here.” ….. They brought the donkey and the colt, placed their cloaks on them, and Jesus sat on them.” 4. What does “Hosanna” mean? - Psalm 118 “Lord, save us! LORD, grant us success! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD.” The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm of the Day – 24 The earth is the LORD’S, and everything in it, * the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it upon the seas * and established it upon the waters. Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? * Who may stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, * he will receive blessing from God his Savior. Refrain Lift up your heads, O you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, * that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? * The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, * that the King of glory may come in. Who is he, this King of glory? * The LORD Almighty—he is the King of glory. Glory be to the Father and to the Son * and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, * is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain 4
Gospel – Mark 11:1-11 The Gospel according to Mark, chapter 11. Glory be to you, O Lord! 11 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 3 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’” 4 They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, 5 some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” 6 They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. 7 When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. 8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. 9 Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” 10 “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!” 11 Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to you, O Christ! Confession of Faith The Catechism’s meaning to the Second Article of the Apostles’ Creed. I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the virgin Mary is my Lord. He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature, purchased and won me from all sins, from death and from the power of the devil, not with gold or silver, but with his holy precious blood and with his innocent suffering and death. All this he did that I should be his own, and live under him in his kingdom, and serve him in everlasting righteousness, innocence and blessedness, just as he has risen from death and lives and rules eternally. This is most certainly true. Hymn of the Day – Hosanna, Loud Hosanna 413 (Blue) 5
Today’s Message Hands of Praise Hymn of Response – Joyously, I’ll Praise My Savior 611 (Blue) Offering and Friendship Register As the Offering is gathered, please sign and pass the Friendship Register Palm Sunday Prayer of the Church Dear Lord Jesus, on this Palm Sunday we come before your throne with requests and praise. Like the crowd, we also hail you as our King. But you were more than the crowds knew then. You are the Lord of all and the King of heaven and earth. While we join the first Palm Sunday worshippers in praising you for coming to this earth to be our Savior, help us also to see you as you really are through the eyes of faith. Though you are Lord of all, you humbled yourself and became one of us. You wore a crown of thorns so we could wear a crown of glory. Thank you for living a life of perfect conformity to God’s holy law in our place. Thank you for being obedient to death, and not just any death, but death by crucifixion, to redeem us from sin. Cause our voices to blend with those who sang your praises as you rode into Jerusalem. Move us to confess you before others as our Lord, and to dedicate all we are to your glory. Lord Jesus, be with those who teach and those who learn. Strengthen the faith of the dying and those struggling with life. Comfort the sick and troubled with your care and protection. Special Requests O Lord, as our king, reign in our hearts and lives forever. Strengthen our desire to be your faithful subjects. Send your Holy Spirit to keep us close to you in faith. As we walk toward Calvary this week, give us hearts dedicated to watching and praying with you, here in your house. Keep us focused on your purpose for coming – to save sinners; and on our calling – to share that message wherever and whenever we can. Hear us, Jesus, our Savior and King. Amen. 6
Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. Blessing The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace. Amen. Closing Hymn – No Tramp of Soldiers’ Marching Feet (Tune: 520 Red) 1) No tramp of soldiers’ marching feet With banners and with drums, No sound of music’s martial beat: “The King of glory comes!” To greet what pomp of kingly pride No bells in triumph ring, No city gates swing open wide: “Behold, behold your King!” 2) And yet he comes. The children cheer; With palms his path is strown. With ev’ry step the cross draws near: The King of glory’s throne. Astride a colt he passes by As loud hosannas ring, Or else the very stones would cry, “Behold, behold your King!” 3) What fading flow’rs his road adorn; The palms, how soon laid down! No bloom or leaf but only thorn The King of glory’s crown. The soldiers mock, the rabble cries. The streets with tumult ring, As Pilate to the mob replies, “Behold, behold your King!” 7
4) Now he who bore for mortals’ sake The cross and all its pains And chose a servant’s form to take, The King of glory reigns. Hosanna to the Savior’s name Till heaven’s rafters ring, And all the ransomed host proclaim, “Behold, behold your King!” Palm Sunday, April 10 ....................................9:30 am Jesus rides humbly into Jerusalem as a King.
