Capuchin Community Services The Book of Numbers The House of Peace and Saint Ben’s Community Meal are places of connection, where people come together to share, serve, and to be satisfied. For our 2022 calendar we have “charted” CCS’ works of mercy, using information gathered in the course of our daily operations, to find out: where do our guests come from? How about our donors – where do they call home? Which St. Ben’s Meal sponsor group travels the farthest? Which one is nearest? Highest? Lowest? Oldest? Youngest? The more we learn about the pillars that support our CCS ministries, the stronger we can make them. Repetition is a technique used in Scripture to emphasize an important point, so we begin our journey into 2022, praying with the psalmist: “May the favor of the Lord our God be ours. Prosper the work of our hands! Prosper the work of our hands!” - Psalm 90 House of Peace Site St. Ben’s Community Meal Site • Emergency Food Pantry • Serving every Sunday through Friday • Clothing Center • Prescription co-pays & medical • Spiritual Care appointment support • UW-M Community Health and Wellness Center – HOP • Showers & Laundry • Marquette Volunteer Legal Clinic • Hygiene items (weekly) • Social Worker • Assistance with IDs & Birth Certificates • Empowerment Classes • Custom-made eyeglasses every Wednesday 1702 West Walnut Street 930 West State Street Milwaukee ● WI ● 53205 Milwaukee ● WI ● 53233 414.933.1300 414.271.0135 Twitter.com/CapuchinComSvc Facebook.com/CapuchinCommunityServices YouTube.com/Capuchin CommunityServicesOrg
How to Volunteer Capuchin Community Services is a site-specific, volunteer-driven ministry carrying out the works of mercy. Our two sites, the House of Peace and Saint Ben’s Community Meal, have unique yet connected missions: to help families stay together, and to help people struggling with poverty and homelessness. Driving these ministries are our volunteers, people of good will who donate their time as they feel called. If you have a gift, an area of expertise you feel called to share, or want to respond to the most pressing needs, you are welcome. It happens just as often that people who come to serve discover gifts they didn’t know they had. We are committed to hosting guests and volunteers in a supportive, joyful, and safe environment. Your volunteer service might bring you in direct contact with our guests, or placed behind the scenes supporting the operations, or something in between. Let us discern this together! Sometimes the work is challenging, but you will never be left on your own – that’s our faith-based commitment to everyone who comes to our sites. To serve safely, all volunteer applications are subject to a background check. The following are volunteer opportunities currently available in our Capuchin Community Services programs. St. Ben’s Community Meal • Staffing the meal prep stations • Staffing the Meal Hall floor – clearing, re-setting, beverage service • Special events and projects • Apply to volunteer at: thecapuchins.net/MealVolunteer • Email: ccsvol@thecapuchins.org St. Ben’s Open Door Ministry: • Shower Program – scheduling and tracking • Laundry Ministry – scheduling and tracking • Eyeglasses Ministry • Barbershop Ministry • Front Door office duty – welcoming & connecting guests to services & resources • Apply to volunteer at: thecapuchins.net/StBensOpenDoor • Email: ccsvol@thecapuchins.org The House of Peace: • Clothing Closet - sorting and organizing clothes • Emergency Food Pantry - stocking and organizing food items • Eyeglasses Ministry • Special events & projects • Apply to volunteer at: thecapuchins.net/HouseOfPeaceVols • Email: ccsvol@thecapuchins.org Our Mission: Inspired by the gospel of Jesus and the example of Francis of Assisi, the Capuchin friars of the Province of Saint Joseph, together with our partners in ministry, prayerfully build sister-brotherhood in the world. We attend simply and directly to the spiritual and other basic human needs, especially those of the poor and disenfranchised, promoting justice for all.
Point in Time is a nation- and city-wide event that our Saint Ben’s site has been a part of for years. We stay open all night offering shelter to people who are not securely housed. Those who come connect with government agencies so the community can gain a sense of how many people are struggling without a safe place to live. Everyone who participates in PIT receives resources including warm clothing and hygiene items, and is connected with resources which can help make a life lasting change. Over 60 faith communities, businesses, neighborhood groups and other caring neighbors support the Community Meal at Saint Ben’s. Our brothers and sisters at Sargento travel the furthest distance, making a 128 mile round trip every 4th Monday of the month. The shortest “commute?” That would be the Saint Benedict the Moor parish community, who are the First Sunday Meal sponsor. They’re right upstairs!

The House of Peace Emergency Food Pantry is designated to serve the 53205 and 53233 ZIP codes. Because we’re the only food pantry open five days a week, however, we’re able to serve a far wider area. In 2020 we served individuals and families from 48 ZIP codes. The HOP Emergency Food Pantry is supervised by Brother Brenton Ertel and sustained by volunteers, financial support, food pantry drives, and our partnership with the local food bank, Hunger Task Force.

When it’s time to make a new beginning, people turn to CCS. At Saint Ben’s we help people obtain their birth certificate, something that’s hard to hang on to when you’re living without secure housing. Volunteers and staff cut through the red tape, and CCS asks only for a nominal co-payment, subsidizing the rest of the fee. This means our guests can apply for an apartment or start a new job. In the last 4 years Saint Ben’s has helped 1,807 people through this ministry.

The foundation of our annual Capuchin Walk for the Hungry, hosted every year at Polish Fest, is the teams and team captains. In 2021 participants from 155 cities and towns in 26 states joined in our virtual/actual neighborhood walk, with over 1300 individuals registered. If all goes well we’ll be back with Polish Fest this year, and once again meet family and friends along the Lakefront State Park paths.

The friars who serve at CCS are itinerants on a journey. That is how Saint Francis formed the brotherhood. It’s farther than you might suppose! July is the month when the Capuchins most often change assignments, move to a new community, or begin the next phase of their formation. Postulants who serve at Saint Ben’s and House of Peace will continue their second year (called novitiate) at San Lorenzo Seminary in Santa Ynez, California, 2,176 miles away. Every year several friars in academic formation in Chicago at Saint Claire Friary travel to Milwaukee for their summer ministry assignments. Welcome brothers – hurry back!

The House of Peace has hosted a Back to School Supplies drive for decades, and the number of people served in 2021 was consistent with recent years. Over 524 children from 198 households received a backpack fully equipped with all a young student needs to be ready for the new school year. Families from ten ZIP codes, some of our city’s most resource-challenged neighborhoods, were served. Thanks to everyone who ordered on-line and had their supplies gift shipped to the HOP, or sent a donation, or hosted a drive.

Ray was always at the head of the line providing trays and napkins (he’s had to retire from volunteering), while Marian continues to dish up the main course.

Saint Anthony Apartments The Direct Help ministry at the House of Peace connects with people in crisis, those who are facing eviction. Our social worker team (Miss Linda Barnes and Brother Jerry Smith) mediate a dialogue between the landlord and the tenant. In cases where an intervention can be helpful, CCS provides an emergency rent payment or supplement. Direct Help is sustained entirely by donations. Since 2017 CCS has helped 868 individuals and families remain in their homes. Capuchin Apartments Through our partnership with Heartland Housing, since 2013 CCS has helped to create and sustain 98 new places to live for people who face many challenges renting on the open market, at Capuchin Apartments and Saint Anthony Apartments.

“If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.” 100 – Saint Teresa of Calcutta Now Colleen is a student at UW-M It’s Friday night and her friends are going out again eight But Saturday morning she’s got a date To be at the food pantry at 8 But wouldn’t she rather be sleeping in late? No, she’d rather make the world a better place And she changes the world one meal at a time Yes, she changes the world one meal at a time Barbara is a woman that everyone knows She comes to the House of Peace to help sort the clothes For people who are homeless, who have lost their home She gives them all a new wardrobe And into the world with confidence they go As she clothes the world one day at a time Yes, she clothes the world one day at a time nine eight Now Paul is retired, would be in bed by 8 But tonight, all night, he’s staying awake It’s 9 degrees on a cold winter night And he’s worried about the people sleeping outside nine So he comes to the Warming Center at 9 To help let the cold ones sleep inside He keeps his watch all through the night And he shelters the world one night at a time Yes, he shelters the world one night at a time one Feeding the hungry and sheltering the homeless We know it’s just a small part of your life But you all change the world one day at a time Yes, you change the world one day at a time Performed by Amy Teutenberg and Jerry Danks at the 2020 CCS Virtual Volunteer Thank You event Lyrics by Amy; music by Amy and Jerry
