ABOUT SECOND HELPINGS Transforming Lives through the Power of Food. LEARN MORE: secondhelpings.org Second Helpings is a community kitchen that prepares and delivers more than 1 million meals to the central Indiana community each year. Second Helpings is not just teaching people to cook. They are providing an avenue for people to transform their own lives. Second Helpings doesn’t just collect food. They rescue food, because they refuse to stand by and allow waste, while so many in the community do not have the healthy food they need to thrive. Second Helpings started with three chefs — Kristen Cordoza, Bob Koch, and Jean Paison, who came together to talk about the food service industry and their community. They saw firsthand the tremendous amount of waste in the food service industry. At the same time, they were acutely aware that most programs serving the disadvantaged often struggled to provide for their clients’ most basic nutritional needs. As food service professionals, they knew just how difficult it was to find employees with the skills needed to be productive in a commercial kitchen. Yet they also knew that many adults struggled in poverty and low-wage jobs because they lacked the basic skills that would allow them to earn more and build a career. The three chefs set forth to solve all four problems—food waste, hunger, job training, and a source of skilled labor for the local food service industry—with one solution: turn unused food into meals and jobs. Second Helpings was born in Spring, 1998. In their first full month of operation, 37 volunteers helped rescue 7,000 pounds of food and prepare 3,074 meals. Second Helpings has a three-part approach to addressing hunger and poverty in Central Indiana. • Food Rescue: Second Helpings works with partners in the food service industry – wholesale distributors, grocers, caterers, restaurants, and others – to safely and efficiently collect surplus and perishable food to help keep it out of local landfills. In 2020, Second Helpings rescued nearly three million pounds of food – the most they have ever rescued in one year. Rescued food is used to “fuel” the Hunger Relief and Culinary Job Training programs. Remaining food is redirected to local food pantries and partner agencies. In 2020, 1.6 million pounds of food product were redirected to local Indiana pantries. Currently, Second Helpings rescues around 300,000 pounds of food each month. ABOUT SECOND HELPINGS • Hunger Relief: Second Helpings volunteers and staff prepare and deliver more than 5,000 nutritious meals to their most vulnerable Central Indiana neighbors each day. Those meals are provided for free to more than 100 partner agencies: homeless shelters, day cares, community centers, after- school programs, and more that feed hungry Hoosiers. Second Helpings prepared more than 1.4 million nutritious meals for the most vulnerable populations in 2020. Those meals represent more than $5.5 million in food cost savings to their community. With those savings, their partner agencies are able to put more money into their primary programs without sacrificing the ability to provide a healthy, delicious meal to the people they serve. In 2020, more than 57,000 hours of service were generously donated by volunteers. • Culinary Job Training: Second Helpings offers a free, 7-week Culinary Job Training program available to unemployed and underemployed adults in Central Indiana. Each step in the program is designed to secure employment upon graduation. These skills extend beyond the kitchen, to provide a foundation for what it takes to be a great employee. Last fiscal year, 59 students graduated from this program. Second Helpings works with more than 100 partner agencies throughout Central Indiana, many of which stepped up to feed Indy during COVID-19. Community centers, churches and civic organizations have all served their neighborhoods and delivered Second Helpings meals to those who are homebound or in need. ABOUT SECOND HELPINGS Community Centers like Shepherd, Flanner House, and Fay Biccard Glick, and organizations like the Black Firefighters Association have all worked to bring Second Helpings meals to struggling households. Second Helpings meals are also distributed at youth meal sites like those operated by IndyParks and the Barbara B. Jordan YMCA as well as remote learning centers supported by the Mind Trust. Food pantries and drive-through distributions conducted by the Indianapolis Urban League and Eskenazi Health also extend the reach of Second Helpings meals. Homebound seniors are particularly affected by this pandemic, especially those living alone who lack family members, caregivers or other support systems. Second Helpings meals are being provided to seniors in need at senior apartment communities including Lugar Tower and Bishop Farris Senior Living, among others. Additionally, Second Helpings’ home delivery program aids homebound seniors, disabled veterans and others who are unable to obtain food from other sources. Second Helpings distributes meals to partner agencies serving individuals with compromised immune systems and particularly at risk of COVID, including Little Red Door Cancer Agency and Conner House (HIV/AIDS). Second Helpings partnered with the City of Indianapolis, Horizon House and the PourHouse to provide meals to homeless populations in the downtown area. Second Helpings also provides meals for programs aiding homeless teens through Outreach as well as supporting Wheeler Mission, Julian Center and other shelters and transitional housing programs.
