Join the KITCHEN 44TH COOKING CLUB The Kitchen 44th Cooking Club is designed for students who are interested in learning the basics of cooking or would like to refresh their fundamental skills. The club will consist of a combination of demonstrations, hands on cooking activities, a good time and good food while students develop and express their culinary abilities in their own unique ways. Whether you are interested in learning how to cook for yourself, for loved ones, for fun or to try something new then this club is for you. Advisor: Mr. Estrella (Room 214)
BARACK OBAMA SCHOOL FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE CHESS CLUB CHESS TEACHES STRATEGY AND INSTRUCTS PLAYERS TO THINK BEYOND THEIR FIRST MOVE. THIS MOTIVATES HIGHER ORDER THINKING SKILLS THAT ENCOURAGES PLAYERS TO QUESTION THEIR CHOICES, BE PATIENT, AND ENHANCE PLANNING SKILLS. BARACK OBAMA SCHOOL FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE Join our group of text-friendly students who want to have rowdy, spirited discussions on books we read together. Books are selected by the students themselves in a rotating schedule. If you enjoy reading and are willing to have your ideas tested this is the club for you! BARACK OBAMA SCHOOL FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE GSA GENDER & SEXUALITY ALLIANCE In the Gender Sexuality Alliance, we will work towards creating a more accepting environment for all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity through education, support, and advocacy. In our meetings, we'll discuss LGBTQ+ issues within and outside of our school, engage in community activism, and plan social events for our school community. BARACK OBAMA SCHOOL FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE FORENSICS The Young Detectives and Investigators Club Students attending will be able to participate in learning about sleuthing techniques used in solving crime, while learning about various professions associated with determining guilt or innocence in a court of law. Guest speakers will be hosted from WCC who will engage students in cybertechnology, the use of drones and cameras for geo-mapping, videography, photography for collecting evidence, and enhance coding skills while using robots. Students will learn skills that can be used later for professional careers in Forensics, law enforcement, videography, photography, lab technicians, researchers, science, medicine, and various professions in the court of law. BARACK OBAMA SCHOOL FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE Art Club THIS CLUB WILL FOCUS ON RECYCLED/ENVIRONMENTAL ART AND THE CREATIVE WAYS IT IS PRODUCED AND THE REASONING BEHIND THE ARTWORK PUT FORWARD. EACH WEEK WE WILL FOCUS ON A SPECIFIC OBJECT TO RECYCLE INTO ART, FOR EXAMPLE: PLASTIC BOTTLES OR BOTTLE TOPS. YOU WILL COME UP WITH A CREATIVE WAY TO USE THIS OBJECT AND PRODUCE A BEAUTIFUL WORK OF ART THAT PUTS FORTH A STRONG MESSAGE ON HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO RECYCLE. THE ART PIECES YOU CREATE WILL BE ADDED TO A COLLEGE PORTFOLIO FOR ART. Advisor: Mrs. Stamatellos (Room 104)
BARACK OBAMA SCHOOL FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE DRAMA CLUB Drama Club is a safe space for any student, teacher or staff member interested in creating, & showcasing their talents within the performing arts. Students will work together through workshops including but not limited to acting, singing, dancing, improv, costumes/makeup, lights/sound to perform in various school wide productions, including a full- scale musical. BARACK OBAMA SCHOOL FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE STUDENT Government Calling all student leaders! It’s time to step up and be the voice of your fellow students! Student Government is an organization that allows students to advocate for the needs and wants of their peers and generally make our school a better place. Elections will be held for class president and other positions. Advisor: Mr. Figueroa (Room 204)
BARACK OBAMA SCHOOL FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE DRUMMING CLUB In drumming club, we will learn from the ground up! We will begin by learning the proper techniques, rudiments, and reading. After that we will move on to more complex snare drum pieces and full drum set (equipment permitting). If you have any interest in learning how to play the drums this is the club for you! BARACK OBAMA SCHOOL FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE MY BROTHER'S KEEPER "THE NEW YORK STATE MY BROTHER'S KEEPER INITIATIVE SEEKS TO "CHANGE THE NARRATIVE" OF BOYS AND YOUNG MEN OF COLOR, AND ALL STUDENTS BY CLOSING AND ELIMINATING THE OPPORTUNITY GAPS THEY FACE AND HELPING THEM TO REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL. WE WILL BE WORKING WITH THE BOYS AND DOING A CURRICULUM CALLED "DARE TO BE KING". THE WAS DEVELOPED TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES TO ADDRESS RELATED TO ANGER AND VIOLENCE AMONG ADOLESCENT MALES. THE CURRICULUM'S PURPOSE IS TO ASSIST ADOLESCENT MALES TO DEVELOP RESILIENCY, MANAGE ANGER AND SOCIAL SKILLS, AND THUS EMPOWERING THEM TO MAKE POSITIVE CHOICES. Advisor: Mr. Rivera (Room 305)
