St Francis Bay is a holiday village in one of the most beautiful and relatively untouched areas 05 of the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The name ‘St Francis’ was chosen in honour of the Patron Saint of Sailors (St Francis), by a Portuguese sailor who sighted this coastal stretch in 1575. In 1954, Leighton Hulett bought a piece of land in the sleepy fishing village that was St Francis and developed the canal system as we see it today. St. Francis The building style of the village of St Francis Bay is of white painted houses with black Bay roofs, some situated on the canals. Also prevalent are the Mediterranean style homes in Santareme and Port St Francis. The Kromme River is navigable for 14 km upstream and is linked to the St Francis canals system. A place for whales which can be spotted in the Bay from May to late October. Dolphins can be seen daily on their way back and forth between the bays of Cape St Francis and Jeffrey’s Bay.
