Guest Presenters Greg Malone Dr Malone commenced consultant urological practice in 2003 with the Brisbane Urology Clinic. In this time, he has continued to develop his special interests of robotic surgery, and prosthetic surgery for severe impotence and urinary incontinence in men, as well as continuing to undertake general urology. In 2002 Dr Malone undertook post-fellowship training at the prestigious Institute for Urology and Nephrology in London. This fellowship focused on prostate cancer and radical prostatectomy, prosthetic urology (penile implant and rehabilitation surgery / male incontinence), endo-urology, and the management of complex stone disease. In 2008 Dr Malone undertook post-fellowship training in the Da Vinci robotic surgical system with an emphasis on robotically assisted radical prostatectomy. Dr Malone is one of the founding surgeons involved in the establishment Queensland’s first robotic surgery unit at the Greenslopes Private Hospital, Queensland Robotic Surgery (QRS). Dr Malone was a member of the surgical team involved in the first robotic radical prostatectomy undertaken in Queensland. QRS is now one of Australia’s preeminent robotic surgical units. Simon Wood Dr Simon Wood is a consultant urological surgeon treating all aspects of adult urology. He has a special interest in renal, prostate and testicular cancer. He has extensive experience in: laparoscopic and percutaneous surgery, endo-urological surgery for renal stones, bladder cancer and prostatectomy major open surgery for advanced cancer including vena cava tumor thrombus and retroperitoneal lymph node dissection & renal transplantation. Dr Wood graduated from the University of Queensland in 1996 and completed his surgical fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Brisbane. Simon completed further urological and transplant surgical training in Dublin, Ireland and has also completed training and accreditation in robotic surgery. He is the principal investigator in a number of clinical trials in advanced renal and prostate cancer and is a member of the Australian Prostate Cancer Research Centre and the Centre for Kidney Disease Research at the Translational Research Institute. Dr Wood is a member of the College of Surgeons Transplant Executive and is also the Director of Urology at Princess Alexandra Hospital. Ashani Couchman Dr Ashani Couchman is a Neuro-Urologist with specialist training in adult, paediatric, adolescent and neuro-urology. Dr Couchman assists people who have a variety of bladder conditions, from those who have acquired neurological or urological conditions — such as Parkinsons, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), or experiencing a stroke — through to people with congenital bladder problems. Dr Couchman is passionate about empowering her patients to live more freely, enjoyably and independently across her work with people with continence, renal and sexual problems. Hans Goossen Dr Goossen graduated in 1999 from the Catholic University of Nijmegen, the Netherlands, with a MBBS and a Physician’s degree. In Australia, he completed his Surgery and specialist Urology training at the major teaching hospitals in Brisbane with a special interest in reconstructive surgery, laparoscopy, stone management, and uro- oncology. He further specialised in the field of male genital surgery and reconstruction at the Institute of Urology at the University College Hospital, London, during a two year Fellowship in the specialty of andrology. His main focus was on Peyronie’s disease, erectile dysfunction and penile implant surgery, genital reconstruction and gender surgery. Dr Goossen is a member of the International Society of Sexual Medicine (ISSM), the European Society of Sexual Medicine (ESSM), the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand (USANZ), the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), and the European Association of Urology (EAU). John Yaxley Dr Yaxley sub-specialises to treat prostate and bladder cancer. He is a qualified and experienced surgeon, having performed thousands of urological surgical procedures. In his sub-speciality area of prostate cancer he has performed over 2000 radical prostatectomy surgery procedures. Since 2010, he has used robotic surgery almost exclusively for this procedure and was one of the first surgeons in Queensland to use the robotic surgery techniques for prostate removal. He is also one of Australia’s most experienced urological surgeons performing brachytherapy procedures for prostate cancer, having performed over 1000 brachytherapy procedures. 2021 USANZ Northern - CA 3 of 7
