Which courses can you choose? • Mainly from your own department and/or faculty • Possibly courses from other faculties • Courses at the Centre for Multilingual academic communication (MoVi) • Pay attention to the pre-requisites of the course and whether it is basic level, intermediate level or advanced course • Almost all courses can be found in the SISU system, but it does not mean that anyone can sign in and take them! (or that they are taught in English) 9 January

Registering for Courses • • Registration period stated in SISU May have separate registration for lectures/ exams/ demos! • If a course is full, you may go to first lecture to see if availability exists, In SISU esp. language courses • Please cancel your registration if you change your plans! When to register? • Your usernames should function on Friday at the latest • Courses have registration deadlines which are announced in SISU in the course description participation in a course confirmed after the end of registration period 9 January

Book exams • Book exam can be: a) a part of a course with contact teaching or b) the only mode of studying of an independent study course, i.e. no lectures! • On general examination days: Faculty specific dates, organised at least once/month, duration: 4 hrs. • Registration: usually 7-10 days before the exam in Korppi (for the time being) JYU. General examination day: Registration in Korppi • Registration for all general examination day exams is done in Korppi system (academic year 2019/2020) • Registration deadline usually 7-10 days before the exam day – be on time, late registrations are not accepted! • Remember also to cancel your registration if you decide not to take the exam after all. General examination day: On the exam day • A roll call & personal envelopes distributed before the exam outside the examination room • You are not allowed to leave an examination until 30 minutes have passed since the beginning of the examination • If a student arrives late for an examination, the exam supervisors must allow him/her to take part (if nobody has yet left the examination room) JYU. General examination day: On the exam day • Leave your bag beside the wall of the examination room, take only the objects needed for writing and erasing with you. No mobile phones, handouts or dictionaries (unless otherwise mentioned)! • It is not allowed to open the envelopes until the exam supervisors give a permission to do so • No talking – at all – in the exam room! • Remember to take your ID/student card to the exam! (your identity will be checked when you return the exam) • Do not cheat!!! You will get into trouble… JYU. Since 1863. 9.1.2020 26
eExaminations • Some courses can also be taken as eExams, but NOT ALL • Registration in the eExam system • Taken in Agora building, room Ag C221; Mon - Fri 8 - 20, Sat 8 - 14 or in bldg Proxima, room X150; Mon - Fri 8 - 18 • More flexibility • eExam rooms sometimes overloaded, especially towards the end of terms register on time • Registration possible 60 days prior to the planned exam date JYU. Exams in general • It is possible to retake exams • However, after 2 no-shows or failed exams, the student must consult the teacher about the next opportunity to take the examination • For each general examination date there is a list of exams you can take + only a certain number of books are available. Grades University of ECTS grading • Some courses may be Jyväskylä scale scale graded pass (HYV)/ fail (HYL) 5 (excellent) A 4 (very good) B • If you fail your exam/ 3 (good) C course, please talk to the teacher to agree on a 2 (satisfactory) D reassessment. 1 (sufficient) E 0 (fail) FX, F JYU. About the Grades • “Normal distribution” IS NOT used, i.e. all students can get a 5, if they do well in the course. • No University level assessment criteria. • Grades and credits do not have any connection, i.e. all students will receive the same number of credits (for the same amount of work), but can receive a different grade. • Students are not usually compared with each other on the basis of their grades. About the Academic Atmosphere • Casual but respectful relationship with professors and other staff: students call their teachers by their (first) names, not by their titles. • The informal ”you = sinä”, is generally used instead of the formal address, “you = te”. • Even many professors dress casually • Feedback collected at the end of each course • You can also ask for feedback about your performance. • Teachers & other staff often have weekly appointment hours, please respect them. • Easy to contact staff by e-mail, though some of the teachers may not prefer – please check. • Be precise in your e-mails: state the topic clearly in the subject field, mention the code/ name of the course, use your name as it is written in SISU. • Please allow enough time for the staff to answer your e-mails, do not expect an immediate answer.
