On your marks... Forget the Archery or 100m Sprint, the Anaphylaxis Games 2021 is a little different. Fancy entering one of the events below? Event 1: Games in a Day One for the families. Hold your very own Super Saturday (or any other day of the week!) and get creative with your day event. You could either go down the retro sports day route, or create your own ‘sports’ and be the best! And for an extra bit of fun, how about pitting the parents against the children? May the best generation win! Here’s some ideas to get you started: Race the Old School Way: Plan a traditional sports day with the classic races. So grab the skipping rope, old pillowcases for the sack race, and markers for a shuttle run. Balloon Dash: Blow up a latex-free balloon, pop it between your legs, and run/waddle around an obstacle course. Here’s a fundraising tip - how about parents must pay a fine and add to the fundraising pot for any balloons dropped – either by themselves or their child! Malteser Run: How far can you blow a Malteser? They go further than you think! On a serious note, please do think about your participants and spectators and if anyone has any allergies – you could use a ping pong ball to be on the safe side. Event 2: Endurance One for the tough cookies. If you’re looking to push yourself physically or mentally, or just fancy doing something weird and wonderful for 24 hours, this event is for you. Any of these ideas do it for you? Fancy Dress Day: Not just for the kids! Pop to the shops in a superhero outfit, or go top to toe full orange to honour the Anaphylaxis Campaign brand colour. You know you want to, we dare you! 5k a Day: Commit to a running, rowing, swimming, or how about skipping challenge for 14 days straight. Or whatever distance you set your mind to! Shhh: How about a sponsored silence…any chatterboxes out there? This one is for you! Event 3: Survival of the Fittest One for the more active sportspeople among us. This event takes it up a notch! Do you dare take on one of these challenges? 25 for 25: 25 reps of 25 different exercises. Easy? Up the reps! 140,000 steps in 14 days: walk (jog, or run!) 140,000 steps in 14 days. The number 14 is significant to raise awareness of the 14 major allergens. Grimbsy to Skegness: Or Exeter to Plymouth? Pick two meaningful locations, cover the distance via your preferred mode of exercise, and set a timeline to clock up the mileage. Event 4: The 9-5 One for the office workers. Host a mini tournament during your lunchbreak and raise the stakes among colleagues. Your ‘sports’ don’t have to be too taxing while wearing your office attire: Beat the Biscuit: Test your biscuit against your brew to see who can dunk for the longest before it sadly disintegrates to the bottom of your mug. Bin Basketball: Scrunch up used paper (make sure you’re GDPR compliant!) and see how many shots on target you can score in 30 seconds. Speed Typing: Go for gold to compete for the fastest typist title. Stick to the Olympics theme and get participants to type out this year’s summer sports or the top 10 countries in the medal table. Event 5: Freestyle If the above events aren’t for you, then this one is guaranteed to be a winner! It’s the Freestyle event. It could be a family competition of Tiddlywinks, a virtual quiz for friends, or even chopping off your hair! 3
Get set... We’ve put together a checklist of the essentials to consider ahead of your ‘Anaphy-lympics’ event. PICK A DATE Once you have decided on your ‘sport’, get the calendar out and decide when to hold your event. Consider how much time you may need to plan, and whether spectators or participants will be joining you. DECIDE ON A VENUE Here’s hoping for some British summer sunshine so you can be in the garden or park, or have a Plan B for unexpected downpours! Please have your Health & Safety hat on and ensure you consider the safety of everyone and check rules and guidelines of venues if your event is not home-based. And of course, be COVID-19 safe. TIME TO FUNDRAISE Once the where and when has been decided, consider how the event is going to raise money. You could set up a JustGiving page in plenty of time to start collecting donations straight away – to boost donations, make sure you add photos and why you’re participating in the Anaphylaxis Games 2021. For ‘Games in a Day’ or ‘The 9-5’ participants, pay a small entry fee for the privilege of competing (or get Mum or Dad to chip in for any children taking part!). And ask spectators to make a donation in exchange for a day of entertainment. EQUIP YOURSELF Using equipment or props for your event? Get kitted up and be prepared with everything you may need. Skipping rope? Check. Tea and biscuits? Already in the cupboard! And for the extra professional look, don something orange to represent the Anaphylaxis Campaign. You’ll find some special resources on our website: www.anaphylaxis.org.uk/anaphylaxis-games-2021/ to decorate your event space which the kids will love to colour in.
