WA State Speed Event Series (SSES) 2018 Cars and Classes Guidelines v2.2 * This is an informal document that will be updated regularly Apologies for the delay in getting this information out to everyone. We know you have been seeking clarity, however before beginning this work we needed to: • update and lodge the 2018 Standing Regulations for the State Speed Event Series (now approved) • come up to speed with the National Competition Rules (NCR) Classes; and then • find an approach that works to retain the key elements of the Series that we all love. Background and Introduction The CAMS WA State Speed Event Series (hereafter referred to as Series) is a CAMS Series that groups together a number of competition events, with each event conducted by a host CAMS- affiliated club. Registered Series entrants are provided with a unique vehicle number for the Series and can accumulate points with the goal of becoming Overall WA State Speed Event Series Champion or winner of their Class for the season. The SSES is run under the CAMS WA Motorsport Development Panel, overseen by the CAMS WA State Council. Historically, classes were not aligned with CAMS NCR (National Competition Rules) classes and it was therefore not always easy or clear for competitors or series coordinators to determine whether specific cars should be in or out of a specific class. Regardless of who administers the series, in 2017 the CAMS State Council WA declared that the 2018 Series would have to comply with CAMS Championship Policies – that is, the competition classes now have to conform to the NCRs identified in the CAMS manual. Important to note It is really important to clarify that the Series and the Series coordinators cannot allocate your vehicle to a class. It is up to you as a competitor to choose the correct or most appropriate class for your vehicle. That said, our role is obviously to help and support competitors and we hope these guidelines make this task a lot easier. About this document This document is intended to outline the approach that the new Coordination team has taken to: a) Comply with the requirement for us to align classes with those NCR classes found within the CAMS manual - all CAMS vehicle classes are available to SSES competitors. b) Point you as a competitor to the number of classes available in the CAMS manual to allow you to choose which of those classes best suits your car. c) Provide a method to allow competitors to compete against cars and people with whom they have competed in the past and to continue to enjoy the camaraderie of that ‘group’. Some of the challenges we faced • Literally hundreds of CAMS classes covering all disciplines of Motorsport in Australia are available – including for example Circuit Racing, Rally, Drift, Historic Classes, Speed Event classes etc. Page 1 of 10
WA State Speed Event Series (SSES) 2018 Cars and Classes Guidelines v2.2 * This is an informal document that will be updated regularly • Often a vehicle can fit into more than one class. • It isn’t super easy to determine where your vehicle should fit. • We felt it was crucial to somehow find a way to retain the previous competitor groupings. The good news • NCR vehicle classes found within the CAMS manual give competitors a clear indication of what is required to comply with a particular class. • We have the flexibility to create “Competition Groups”. This means we can group vehicles from a number of different CAMS NCR Classes into a Competition Group to effectively retain the grouping of car types (and by association, those drivers) that have enjoyed competing against each other in the past. Guidelines Hopefully it’s obvious by now that: • it is almost impossible for us to provide specific guidelines for everyone registered up front with the series or for those who join later; and • it is you the competitor who must determine the correct class for your car. As a result, we have had a look at the key car types and groups that have historically competed in the Series and developed a ‘template’ and some guidelines for those vehicles and for similar vehicles. For other more specific vehicles, we will help as best we can to provide information and supporting documents to help you determine the best class for your car and then the Competitor Group into which it might best fit. We have provided a table (see Table One below) with many of the important CAMS PDFs and direct links to those documents. Following that you will find a detailed “Examples & Suggestions” table (see Table Two) in which we have tried to show many of the typical vehicles and vehicle types that participate in the Series and where possible details of actual cars and drivers so that you can hopefully identify your car or one like it. Please can we humbly suggest not diving straight into Table One and printing out all the CAMS Documents, but instead take a look at the Examples table and then revisit those CAMS documents that are most relevant to your car. To help with this, Table Two also includes a Link # which is a direct reference to the CAMS documents link in Table One. The color-coding we have provided in the Table Two is based on Competition Group, which essentially means you should be able to see the other cars and driver groups that you would be competing against. Please note that where appropriate, many of the Competition Groups would then be further broken up into different engine size sub-groups. Page 2 of 10
