Spend your time wisely in preparation for these examinations. • Be punctual each day. • Students are not permitted to leave an examination early. • It is the responsibility of each student to bring the required equipment into the examination room. The sharing of items will not be permitted.
English Year 8 Yearly Examination Assessment Task Number: 4 Weighting: 30% Exam Length: 2 x 40 minutes (plus 5 minutes reading time) Course Specific Criteria • Communicates through speaking, listening, reading, writing, viewing and representing. 5% • Uses language to shape and make meaning according to purpose, audience and context 15% • Thinks in ways that are imaginative, creative, interpretive and critical 10% BPL Dispositions Examination Components This class examination will specifically focus on the Term 3 unit “Deciphering Truth”. Students will be presented with a previously unseen text and asked to: • Respond to multiple choice questions 10 marks • Compare two texts by responding to short answer questions 20 marks • Write an extended response to the reading material 30 marks
English Year 8 Examination Study Guide Key English Study Strategies: • Ensure that all assigned class and home learning tasks have been completed. • Review the notes and text samples provided by the class teacher. • Complete revision activities provided by the class teacher. In order to prepare for this examination students should focus their study on the following topics: • Structure and language features of Feature Articles. • Structure and language features of Editorials. • Persuasive writing techniques. It is suggested that students use/access the following resources: • Student’s own English workbook. • Notes and handouts provided by the class teacher. • CANVAS • Textbook (accessed via Jacplus): “English is … 7”, Chapter 6.2 “Persuasion uses a range of techniques”.
History Year 8 Yearly Examination Assessment Task Number: 2 Weighting: 50% Exam Length: 45 minutes (plus 5 minutes reading time) BPL Dispositions Examination Components The Examination will consist of two sections: 1. Multiple Choice (20 Marks) 2. Source Questions and Short Answer (30 Marks)
History Year 8 Examination Study Guide Key History Study Strategies: • Complete any missed classwork. • Re-read the relevant chapters in your online textbook. • Answer any questions in the online textbook that you have not yet completed, and show your responses to your class teacher for feedback. • Revise your essay-writing technique (PEEL – Point, Explanation, Evidence, Link) and ensure that you are able to write in sufficient detail. • Create a learning summary using the dot-points listed above as a guide – you can use flashcards, create mind maps and flowcharts, create study notes, etc. In order to prepare for this examination students should focus their study on the following topics: The Angkor/ Khmer Empire - Key sites and geography of the Angkor Empire. - Everyday life in the Angkor Empire. - Roles of key individuals within the Angkor Empire. - Reasons for the rise of the Angkor Empire to prominence. - Cultural achievements of the Angkor Empire (water management, religion, temples etc.). - Reasons for the decline of the Angkor Empire. It is suggested that students use/access the following resources: • Textbook: Retroactive 1, Chapter 5a • Class notes & worksheets • Videos, summaries and additional resources provided on Canvas
Mandarin Year 8 Yearly Examination Assessment Task Number: 3 Weighting: 35% Exam Length: 50 minutes (plus 5 minutes reading time) Course Specific Criteria The exam will consist of THREE sections: Listening & Responding (10%); Reading & Responding (10%), and Extended response (15%). BPL Dispositions Examination Components • Listening and Responding 10 marks • Reading and Responding 10 marks • Extended response about a chosen Chinese Traditional Outfit 15 marks
Mandarin Year 8 Examination Study Guide Key Stage 4 Mandarin Study Strategies: • Home revision and revise class notes • Review and study revision booklet and resheets and booklet • Research and prepare information about one of the chosen Chinese Outfit prior to the in-class exam In order to prepare for this examination students should focus their study on the following topics: • Numbers, family and age • Clothing and Colours It is suggested that students use/access the following resources: • Revision notes and booklets (can be accessed through Canvas) • In-class dialogues and exercise book • Internet & other online resources
Mathematics 8.1 and 8.2 Yearly Examination Assessment Task Number: 4 Weighting: 40% Exam Length: 2 x 55 minutes each Course Specific Criteria In order to prepare for this examination students should focus their study on the following topics: Use your Work Plans to further break down these topics in content and use the Study Guide referenced to your textbook. • Measurement • Data • Algebra & Indices, • Applications of Percentages, • Rates and Ratio • Equations • Pythagoras’ Theorem • Linear Relationships BPL Dispositions Examination Components • This is a written test to be completed as follows: Paper A Section I – Multiple Choice (20 marks) Section II – Short Response (15 marks) Section III – Literacy Questions / Problem-Solving (15 marks) Paper B Topic Based Questions (50 marks) • The total is 100 marks • Length = 2 x 55 mins - Follow exam guidelines - Use black pen for your working - Use a pencil and ruler for diagrams or sketches - Do not use liquid paper or white out tape - Calculators may be used • Marks are awarded for good mathematical thinking • Show your working • Marks may be lost for poorly organised or written work
Mathematics 8.1 and 8.2 Examination Study Guide Key Mathematics Study Strategies: 1. Always revise your work daily, weekly and then do a major review one week before your exam. 2. Once an exam is announced: - Construct a list of topics to review - Find specific problems for each topic on your list - Make your list long enough to provide enough practice for mastery 3. You must master all the topics on your list before you work on any practice tests. 4. You may have to practice some types of problems over and over again until you can work them in less time. 5. Analyse your homework problems, practice tests and past exams. Note the typical errors you usually make – Give yourself more practice in these areas. It is suggested that students use/access the following resources: • Study Guide program and accompanying Revision Booklets • Past topic tests and solutions • Work Plans and work book exercises – especially chapter reviews (end of chapter) • Textbook Revision Exercises from Maths Quest • Mathletics – has videos, practice exercises. • Teachers (we are here to help you) • After school homework assist • Create a study group with each other at lunch or after school! In order to prepare for this examination students should focus their study on the following topics: 1. Measurement (MathsQuest Chapter 9) - Conversion between units of length - Perimeters of shapes - Area of squares, rectangles and triangles - Area of composite shapes, and the surface area of basic prisms - Calculates volumes and capacities (and converts between units of capacity) 2. Data (MathsQuest Chapter 13) - Interprets and evaluates data from dot plots, line graphs and two-way tables - Analyse sets of data using measures of location (mean, median and mode) as well as range - Compares sets of data 3. Algebra and Indices (MathsQuest Chapter 7,8) - Algebraic expressions and abbreviations - Substitution - Four operations with pronumerals - Expanding brackets - Factorising - Squares, cubes and powers - Square roots and cube roots - Index laws with numbers 4. Equations (MathsQuest Chapter 10) - Use algebraic techniques to solve linear equations that may require up to 3 steps
5. Applications of Percentages (MathsQuest Ch 3) - Percentage conversions - Finding percentage of quantities - Finding percentage of quantities as percentages - Increasing and decreasing by a percentage - Unitary method - Discounts and GST 6. Rates and Ratio (MathsQuest Chapter 5) - Simplify ratios - Solve problems involving simple ratios - Apply the unitary method to ratio problems - Convert to a simplified rate - Solve a range of problems involving rates including rates of travel i.e. speed. 7. Pythagoras’ Theorem (MathsQuest Chapter 14) - Identify the sides in a right-angled triangle - Applies Pythagoras’ theorem to calculate side lengths in right-angled triangles, and solves related problems 8. Linear Relationships (MathsQuest Chapter 11) - Number patterns - Find the rule - Linear patterns
Science Year 8 Yearly Examination Assessment Task Number: 4 Weighting: 25% Exam Length: 50 minutes plus 5 minutes reading time Course Specific Criteria This examination is designed to allow you to show your understanding and comprehension of the materials covered by class work, homework and practical work. The content being examined covers topics including: From Little Things Big Grow, Circle of Life, Energy, as well as Science Skills.
