                                               CORONAVIRUS UPDATE
Over the last 3 days I have spent a lot of time wandering in the playground at lunchtimes. I have noticed some children are
showing signs of anxiousness. Children often show a multitude of signs of anxiety such as being less tolerant than usual
with others, making poor behaviour choices they would not necessary make at other times, saying inappropriate things,
being tired, talking about their concerns and so on. Some have expressed concerns about their parents’ work situations and
panic supermarket purchases as well as some people are dying from the virus. Please be really patient with them and listen
to their concerns and interpretations of what is happening. Talk to them about what is happening and keep reiterating you
are confident that over time things will come right. Please don’t dwell on showing them media items such as on TV News
programs, in newspapers and social media posts.

Recently, I was sent this quick identification guide to
determine the differences between the symptoms of
COVID-19, the ‘flu and a cold. I can’t necessarily guarantee
the accuracy of it but I rather like it!

Please remember to continually remind your children about
the need to minimise the risks by:
 Avoiding close contact with people with cold or flu-
like illnesses or people who have been asked to self-isolate (close contact is defined as being within two metres for
         more than 15 minutes).
 Covering coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues or clothing.
 Washing hands for at least 20 seconds with water and soap and dry them thoroughly:
o before eating or handling food
              o after using the toilet
o after coughing, sneezing, blowing your nose or wiping children’s noses
o after caring for sick people.
If you have the symptoms and have recently been to a country or area of concern, or have been in close contact with
someone confirmed with COVID-19, please call Healthline's COVID-19 line, with translators and interpreters available 24/7
in 150 languages:
      Free call 0800 358 5453
      +64 9 358 5453 for international SIMS

If you intend to visit your GP or after-hours medical centre, phone ahead to let them know.

TASMAN DISTRICT COUNCIL CITIZENSHIP CEREMONY

Recently, Mrs Armstrong took a group of
senior choir children to sing at the
                                              Tasman District Council’s new citizens
ceremony. They sang brilliantly and what
was really special was one of our families
(the Vissers) who originated from South
                                              Africa received their NZ citizenship
                                              certificates.

                                           SWIMMING POOL CLOSURE
It’s nearly the end of the swimming pool season. Only a few classes are still swimming. The pool will be closed for the
season from 3pm this Friday 20th March. A huge thankyou to parents, Michaela Ross & Adam Lelo, for their wonderful
efforts over the season. Between them they undertake three hourly testing of the pool every Saturday and Sunday. A
huge commitment. This is a legal requirement. Many hearty thanks. Keyholders, please return your key to the office as
PARENT CONCERNS, COMPLAINTS AND GRUMBLES PROCEDURES
soon as possible.

                                   BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL PURCHASES
This week we have spoken to a number of parents and children about them visiting McDonald’s and other take-away places
prior to school. This is to purchase hot chocolates, frozen cokes, hot chips and hash browns. A number of parents weren’t
aware this was happening. We discourage this practice and recommend children don’t do this before or after school.

You are invited to a Komiti Māori meeting
                                    THURSDAY 2nd APRIL
                                                        7pm
                                  Richmond School staffroom
We will be discussing Te Reo and Tikanga Māori as well as our Rich topic for next term.

We would love to hear your ideas.

We will also be discussing what has happened in different syndicates in 2019 and would
then like to look at some goals in Te Reo and Tikanga Māori for 2020.

You do not need to be a member of the Komiti Māori to attend.
Please let the office know if you can attend – we would love to see you there.

                            GROWING SUCCESSFUL LEARNERS
HOMEWORK should be HAPPY and HELPFUL!! PART 1

Reading homework should be a chance for your child to show off how good they are at reading and for you to
praise how clever they are. It should be a positive time and make your child feel good and happy. If you are
finding reading, or any homework, is causing frustration, raised voices, “I can’t’s”, etc or if it is taking 40 minutes
to get a book read, you need to stop! Any of these things foster a negative attitude to reading and/or homework
and therefore it is detrimental to your child and their learning. Keep in your mind, 5 mins for each book, 5 mins
for spelling, etc. It should be SHORT and SWEET and finished with a SMILE. If this is happening, tell your child how
fab they were, doing their home work today and then follow it with 15mins of TV, ipad, bike riding, trip to the
park etc as a reward for their efforts. If it is not possible and things are starting to slide downhill, you could say,
“OK, I think that is enough for today, you have worked really hard.” ( or,”This seems hard today because you are
so tired, we can try again in the morning”. Or whatever suits you and the situation.) BUT THEN….. “I’m going to
read to you now. Go and choose me a book/chapter etc.” This still ends the session on a happy note, with a
SMILE! If homework is too hard and stressful EVERY night, you need to discuss this with their teacher.
