Jungle playset Miss Meagan had a surprise for the Hippos today; it was a new playmat featuring the jungle with animal and tree pieces. The class took turns in using the playmat which not only offered a soft sensory experience through the mat itself but also an experience to assist in recognising different animals. Olivia was first to try the new mat and immediately begun to pick up the different animal pieces that came with the mat. She picked up each piece and inspected them carefully, looking over both side before setting them on the mat and going for the next. As she picked up a lion piece; an educator had asked her what was on the piece, after showing the educator the piece in response she put it down on the mat. This shows not only the child exploring a new interest and expanding self identity but also showing social development through non verbal communication with the educator. Jovie, Auston and Linus each also enjoyed inspecting the animal pieces and the sensory experience the mat gave, however found a sub experience they could all join in. Auston had found the container that the mat came with and began feeling and inspecting the see through plastic. Soon after he had sat down with the container; Jovie began picking up pieces from the playmat set and putting them back in the container. While Jovie was doing this and Auston holding up the bucket; Linus saw what was happening and watched on for a minute before joining in the impromptu cleaning. This sudden cooperative experience was a great show of social play and development through the use of non verbal communication between the children to achieve a singular goal through their play. The actions also showed cognitive thinking, being able to link the new container with the never before seen by the children play set. 1.4, 2.1, 2.4, 4.1, 4.2, 5.1
Watering the garden Brian, Jovie, Auston, Olivia and even Linus spent this morning, helping Mother Nature, and getting into the Environmental Nature week by watering the gardens. Jovie enjoyed watering the gardens, and had to go back several times to refill her watering can because the plants were so thirsty. Olivia laughed as she watched the dirt absorb all the water. Olivia then poured more water into the garden and laughed a second time when the water continued to disappear. Brian used his mighty strength to pour the water from the watering can, and moved the water over the plants like a little sprinkler. Auston used two watering cans to water the plants, and was shocked when all the water emptied from the watering cans. Linus enjoyed playing with the water inside the watering can, than actually watering the plants. Linus giggled and shook his hands as the cool water that touched his hands, shocked him. Playdough and natural resources Today the children had the opportunity to explore a fresh batch of playdough Miss Bri had made up for us. I set the playdough up on the table and placed down our tray of natural resources. The children began coming over to the table, ready to explore and investigate. They all had a turn at feeling the playdough but none of them apart from Jovie was interested in exploring it any further. Instead they all happily sat at the table and explored the tray of natural resources once again. Ibrahim, Jovie and Auston sat as a group and thought they where just so clever by seeing how many things their heads could hold. Jovie managed to get about 4 flowers on her head before she began placing them on mine. Ibrahim couldn't understand how to get the flower to balance on his head while he leaned over to collected another and began becoming quite frustrated so I passed him another flower to place on top of his head. Auston started by putting the vine on his head, giggling as it hung down Infront of his eyes. Auston then placed a rock on top of his head and as it fell off, it hit the ground beside him creating a loud bang. “oh no” Jovie and Ibrahim said at the same time. Auston laughed be- fore placing another vine on his head. This simple activity required a lot of concentration and was great to see the children create play using their imagination! Child lead activities Creating noise with rocks and sticking flowers to the wall! While we where waiting for Miss Bri to make our playdough we began exploring the tray of natural resources. While we where doing this, auston was busy searching threw the tray excitedly, Pulling out two rocks, Auston began banging them together laughing at the noise he recognised he was making. Jovie noticed what her friend was doing when she Immedi- ately began doing the same. Jovie then handed me over two rocks so I could join in on the fun. We then sat as a group and made lots of noise which made all our friends laugh and giggle. As we where doing this I then made up a silly song, “if your happy and you know it, bang your rocks!” Auston thought this was just hilarious as he laughed and squealed in excitement. Olivia noticed all our laughter and came over to join, laughing and bopping up and down at my singing and the loud banging noise she could hear. While we where doing this Linus had collected the flowers from the floor and found it they could stick to the wall. Linus was amazed by this as he repeatedly stuck the flower on and off the wall. I then stuck a row of flowers a little higher up for Linus to stand and reach as he is learning to stand and increasing his physical development, this was a great way to extend on this. Linus was able to stand up, re- trieve the flowers before carefully sitting back down to place them on the floor. Linus you did such a great job! Self selected activities & interest The Hippos took the morning to explore not only their indoor environment but also their outdoor activities. In allowing the babies to explore both environments the educators are able to gain a better understanding of not only the child’s growing interests but also where they’re at in their current development. For the children it is a great opportunity to ex- plore themselves and their interests and self identities as well as socialise with their fellow classmates and educators. Mila and Linus took this time to sit down and read some books they found to look interesting. Linus found a book that was all about opposites and had a touch and feel experience for its readers. He first begun by inspecting the cover of the book, feeling the attached rubbery material on the front and how it compared to the rest of the cover. After feeling out the cover of the book, Linus opened the book and took in the images and colours inside the book; doing his best to locate all of the touch and feel experiences. Mila had found a book outside that was all about counting different animals. Notic- ing her interest, an educator helped her get the book on her lap for a better inspection. Once in position; Mila started flip- ping through the book, putting her hand over the different animals on the pages. Brian decided to explore the room’s home corner and its microwave. Opening the microwave; Brain had put in a small sili- cone mat inside and closed the door. After waiting a few seconds he had opened the door again and peeked inside and feeling the mat before closing the door again. Brain did this several more times, giggling after each look before being sat- isfied with his cooking and off to explore another activity. Meanwhile Olivia had chose to explore both of the different environments available for her to investigate. Starting inside, Olivia also explored the home corner’s microwave where she placed whatever small toys she could inside until she there were no more toys in reach. After home corner play she delved into the ball pit where after seeing an educator throw a ball back in; she responded by throwing a ball back out to the educator and giggling. This turned into a back and forth between Olivia and the educator of throwing the balls in and out of the pit. Finally after exploring all of her indoor sur- roundings she then investigated the outdoor scene where she took a shine to the red climbable car. Olivia began climbing the front of the car and going back and forth. Seeing this; Auston decided to give the climbing a try and joined Olivia in the climbing. This shows social development in both children as it shows not only observing potential play but also side by side play. Learning Outcomes; 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 2.1, 3.2, 4.1, 5.2, 5.3
