WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS

CALL TO WORSHIP
P. The shepherds heard “good news of great joy,”
let us celebrate this good news together.

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS
P. God of life,
C. you promise good news of great joy for all people,
and call us to be messengers of your peace.
We confess that too often we hoard our joy,
   our resources, and our security.
We nurture conflict and build barriers.
We neglect the needs of our neighbors
and ignore the groaning of creation.
   Have mercy on us.
Where we are self-centered, open our hearts.
Where we are reluctant, give us courage.
Where we are cynical, restore our trust.
   Renew us with your grace
and give us again the hope of eternal life in you.
   Amen.
P. Hear the good news:
Jesus comes to us as a baby in a manger. We too are children of God and receive God’s
promised forgiveness and love. In Jesus, we are called blessed, loved and forgiven.
C. Amen.

HYMN OF PRAISE “Joy to the World”
Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her king; let ev’ry heart prepare
him room and heav’n and nature sing, and heav’n and nature sing, and heav’n and
heav’n and nature sing.

PRAYER OF THE DAY
L. The grace of Jesus, our Lord and Savior, the love of God from which nothing can separate
us, and the life-giving Holy Spirit is with you all.
C. And also with you.
L. Let us pray together,
C. Eternal God, you came to be near to us in Jesus. Grow in us a deep love for you
that spills over into everything we do. Help us to ponder and hold in our hearts
the mysterious and wonderful ways that you are at work in us, through us, and all
   around us. Amen.

                                                                                             2
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Good Christian friends, rejoice with heart and soul and voice; give ye heed to what
we say: Jesus Christ is born today; ox and lamb before him bow, and he is in the
manger now. Christ is born today! Christ is born today!
Good Christian friends, rejoice with heart and soul and voice; now ye hear of endless
bliss: Jesus Christ was born for this! He has opened heaven’s door, and we are blest
forevermore. Christ was born for this! Christ was born for this!

BIBLE READING Luke 2:15-21
When the angels returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Let’s go right now
to Bethlehem and see what’s happened. Let’s confirm what the Lord has revealed to us.”
They went quickly and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. When
they saw this, they reported what they had been told about this child. Everyone who heard
it was amazed at what the shepherds told them. Mary committed these things to memory
and considered them carefully. The shepherds returned home, glorifying and praising God
for all they had heard and seen. Everything happened just as they had been told. When
eight days had passed, Jesus’ parents circumcised him and gave him the name Jesus.
This was the name given to him by the angel before he was conceived.
The Word of the Lord
C. Thanks be to God

MESSAGE Pastor Courtney Steitz

SONG “What Child is This”
What child is this, who, laid to rest, on Mary’s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet
with anthems sweet while shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the king,
whom shepherds guard and angels sing; haste, haste to bring him laud, the babe, the
son of Mary!
Why lies he in such mean estate where ox and lamb are feeding? Good Christian,
fear; for sinners here the silent Word is pleading. Nails, spear shall pierce him
through, the cross be borne for me, for you; hail, hail the Word made flesh, the babe,
the son of Mary!
So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh; come, peasant, king, to own him. The King of
kings salvation brings; let loving hearts enthrone him. Raise, raise the song on high,
the virgin sings her lullaby; joy, joy, for Christ is born, the babe, the son of Mary!

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
We believe in one God, who is Creator,
maker of all we see and all we don’t see.
Who is Ruler of the universe: Source of all creation!
We believe in one God, who is Jesus Christ,
God from God, Light from Light, true God and true human.
He is one with the Creator; the Word made flesh, our Messiah:
Savior of all creation!
We believe in one God, who is Holy Spirit,
Breath of God moving among us;
Who is one with the Creator; one with the Christ; our Comforter and our Guide:
Mentor of all creation!
                                                                                         3

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be
done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our

temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and
the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
