Memorial of
         Saints Jean de Brébeuf and
     Isaac Jogues and their Companions
                        Evening Prayer
 This memorial honors eight French martyrs of the Society of Jesus who gave
  themselves to strenuous missionary work among the Hurons. Five of these
   bravely underwent cruel martyrdom in what is now Canada; they were all
 priests: Jean de Brébeuf (d. March 16, 1649), Antoine Daniel (d. July 4,
    1648), Gabriel Lalemant (d. March 17, 1649), Charles Garnier (d.
December 7, 1649), and Noël Chabanel (d. December 8, 1949). Of the other
three, one was a priest, Isaac Jogues (d. October18, 1646), and the other two
were Brothers, Ren♪ Goupil (d. September 29, 1642) and Jean de La Lande
 (d. October 19, 1646); these three offered the supreme sacrifice of their lives
      with heroic fortitude in what is now the United States of America.
              They were all canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1930.

Psalmody All sit while we sing the psalms antiphonally.
   Antiphon 1:
       Leader: The mortal bodies of God’s saints
          All: lie buried in peace, but they themselves live with God forever.

                                      Psalm 116:1-9

                         I love the Lord, for the Lord has heard
                         the cry of my appeal.
                         The Lord was attentive to me
                         in the day when I called.
                         They surrounded me the snares of death
                         with the anguish of the tomb;
                         they caught me sorrow and distress.
                         I called: O my God, deliver me.
                         How gracious is the Lord and just;
                         our God has compassion.
                         The Lord protects the simple hearts;
                         I was helpless so God saved me.
                         Turn back, my soul, to your rest
                         for the Lord has been good,
                         and has kept my soul from death,
                         my eyes from tears and my feet from stumbling.
                         I will walk in the presence of the Lord
                         in the land of the living.
                 (all)   Praise the Holy Trinity
                         both now and forever. Amen.
Antiphon 2: from the spiritual diaries of Saint Jean de Brébeuf
    Leader: Jesus, my Lord and Savior,
    All: what can I give you in return for all the favors you have first conferred on me?
       I will take from your hand the cup of your sufferings and call on your name.

                            Psalm 116:10-19

                      I trusted, even when I said:
                      “I am sorely afflicted,”
                      and when I said in my alarm:
                      “No one can be trusted.”

                      How can I repay the Lord
                      for his goodness to me?
                      The cup of salvation I will raise;
                      I will call on the Lord’s name.
                      My vows to the Lord I will fulfill
                      before all the people.
                      O precious in the eyes of the Lord
                      is the death of God’s faithful.

                      Your servant, Lord, your servant am I;
                      you have loosened my bonds.
                      A thanksgiving sacrifice I make:
                      I will call on the Lord’s name.
                      My vows to the Lord I will fulfill
                      before all the people.
                      in the courts of the house of the Lord,
                      in your midst, O Jerusalem.
              (all) Glory to the Father and to the Son,
                      and to the Holy Spirit
                      as it was in the beginning is now
                      and will be for ever. Amen.
Antiphon 3:
           Leader: These are the saints
           All:    who surrendered their bodies in witness to God’s covenant;
                  they have washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb.

                              Canticle: Revelation 4:11; 5:9, 10, 12
                                                                                                              Frank Quinn, O.P.

                         O Lord our God, you are worthy to receive glory and honor and power.
                         For you have created all things; by your will they came to be and were made.
                         Worthy are you to receive the scroll and break open its seals, for you were slain;
                         with your blood you purchased for God
                         men and women of every race and tongue, of every people and nation.
                         You made of them a kingdom, and priests to serve our God,
                         and they shall reign on the earth.
                         Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches,
                         wisdom and strength, honor and glory and praise.
                         Glory to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit
                         as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.

Reading                                                                          1 Peter 4:12-16
     Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that is taking place among you to test you,
     as though something strange were happening to you.
     But rejoice in so far as you are sharing Christ’s sufferings,
     so that you may also be glad and shout for joy when his glory is revealed.
     If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed,
     because the spirit of glory, which is the Spirit of God, is resting on you.
     But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, a criminal, or even as a mischief-maker.
     Yet if any of you suffers as a Christian, do not consider it a disgrace,
     but glorify God because you bear this name.

  Antiphon:
     Leader: The holy friends of Christ rejoice in heaven;
     All: they followed in Christ’s footsteps until the end.

     All silently make the sign of the cross as the canticle begins.

The Lord’s Prayer

Prayer
     Leader: O God, who chose to manifest the blessed hope of your eternal Kingdom
           by the toil of Saints Jean de Brébeuf, Isaac Jogues and their companions
           by the shedding of their blood, graciously grant that through their intercession
           the faith of Christians may be strengthened day by day.
           Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you
           in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
     All: Amen.

Blessing
     Leader: May the Lord bless us, protect us from all evil, and bring us to everlasting life.
     All: Amen.
Marian Antiphon      Salve Regina

                  Hail holy Queen,
                  Mother of mercy,
                  our life, our sweetness,
                  and our hope.
                  To thee do we cry,
                  poor banished children
                  of Eve.
                  To thee do we
                  send up our sighs,
                  mourning and weeping
                  in this valley of tears.
                  Turn then,
                  most gracious Advocate,
                  thine eyes of mercy
                  toward us.
                  And after this
                  our exile,
                  show unto us
                  the blessed fruit
                  of thy womb, Jesus.
                  O clement, O loving,
                  O sweet Virgin Mary.
