A Note from the Pastor... Biblical motherhood has to do with a woman’s commitment to her husband and his calling, to her children and their training, and Christ and His glory. In other words, true biblical motherhood must always be understood in the context of Christian discipleship. This is my first Mother’s Day without my mother. My sweet mama taught me many valuable lessons throughout my life—about Jesus, character, love, compassion, and laughter. I could probably write a book on all that she taught me. However, there have been a few lessons God has taught me since I’ve said goodbye to the one who first held me. Here are a few: Enjoy the people in your life. Relationships are among God’s greatest gifts. Godly wisdom tells us that we ought to enjoy these gifts and pleasures the way that God has providentially intended for us to enjoy. Many things in life do not last, enjoy them while they do (Ecclesiastes 5:18-20). While not everyone had/has a great mother, everyone has amazing people in their life. Therefore, treasure the sweet and wonderful relationships that matter most. Number your days. The Psalmist says, “Teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12). Losing my dad when I was 27 and now losing my mom when I’m 40 has been a sobering and painful reminder that I don’t have forever to do what God has called me to do. James says that our life is like “a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes” (James 4:14). Brevity of days is a fact of life. Stewardship requires us to be gripped with this truth and leverage our finite days to make much of Christ while we still have time. Don’t worry. One of life’s greatest killjoys is worry—whether it’s over finances, health, security, family or safety—freedom and joy will never be found in the midst of worry. Now that I’m at the top of my family tree for my immediate family, I have found myself worrying about my own wife and children as I contemplate the young age my dad died, an age that I’m not terribly far from. I sometimes think to myself, “If the Lord takes me home soon, have I taught my children every- thing they need to know? Will they be ready for life? Will my family be Okay without me?” However, I open up God’s Word and hear Jesus giving a simple command to understand, yet one of the hardest commands to apply: “Don’t worry.” (Matthew 6:34). That sounds good, but how in the world are we supposed to not worry in light of so much uncertainty in life. He then grounds His command in the sovereign and benevolent care of God. “Consider the sparrow,” He says. “God is concerned with sparrows, and you are of more value than the sparrow” (Matthew10:31 paraphrased). As the old song goes, “His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches over me.” Mothers are precious. One of the most beautiful acts of final care for Mary was displayed by Jesus on the cross when He said, “[John], Behold your mother” (John 19:27). Motherhood was designed by God, created by God, and blessed by God. Nothing can make your life sweeter than a good mother. “At the heart of the Gospel is sacrifice, and there is perhaps no occupation as innately sacrificial as motherhood” (Rachel Jankovic). If you have a great mother, honor her as the precious jewel in your life that she is. Hug her with all your might and tell her how thankful you are for all the sacrifices she has made for you. As I think about the four future moms that I’m raising, I can’t help but delight in the wonderful example of motherhood that they have seen in their two grandmothers and the Godly example they see in my sweet wife. Though this Mother’s Day will be the toughest one yet, I’m thankful that through my family and our church, we are raising up another generation of Godly mothers who will be a shining light of love and hope in this world. -Pastor Ben DEACONS OF THE WEEK May 10-16 Ryan Butterworth Henry Lincoln Bob Cannon
