World Mental Health Day 2018 This resource pack provides those organising an event, within their building, examples of activities they could undertake and information on the resources available to services from the Healthy Minds Group. General Information Date: Wednesday 10th October 2018 Time: Various throughout the day Venue: Across the city Audience: All LCC staff Theme: Managing Stress Purpose: To mark World Mental Health Day 2018, the Healthy Minds Group, part of the Disabled Staff Network is hosting a conference in the Banqueting Suite, Civic Hall as well as working with HR business partners to organise smaller satellite events in service specific council buildings across the city.
World Mental Health Day 2018 Satellite Events The HMG will work with HR Service Managers / Business Partners, or nominated staff members within service areas to organise local events for staff working across the city We suggest events taking place across the council are structured using the NHS Five steps to mental wellbeing, these are: Connect. Be active. Keep learning. Give to others. Be mindful.
World Mental Health Day 2018 Connect • Tea and talk – Teams can set aside some time to get together and catch up over a cuppa. As an additional extra, teams could choose to bake or buy cakes and buns to sell to raise money for the Healthy Minds Group. • Team building workshops – Services could organise workshops and activities to help their teams get to know each other a little better; building new and better relationships. • Board games – Staff can bring in a selection of board games to play with their colleagues on lunchtimes. Additionally, the PHRC have some mental health board games which services could possibly borrow. • Office ‘Oscars’ – Services could create fun awards where colleagues nominate each other leading up to the event, with an awards ceremony on the day. • Office lunch – This could be in the form of a fuddle where colleagues bring food to share with each other; but ultimately where teams take the time to sit together over lunch, away from their desks.
World Mental Health Day 2018 Be Active • Lunch time walk – Teams could get together at lunch time and go for a walk in their local neighbourhood or park. • Deskercise – Where colleagues spend most of their time at their desk, teams could set aside ten minutes of the day to do some desk based exercises. • Table Tennis – With a little rearranging of tables, this is a cheap and easy way to get colleagues active, perhaps with a little office competition! • Yoga session – If you know of anyone within your service area who teaches yoga and would be willing to show colleagues some basic moves, a room could be set aside for a short yoga session.
World Mental Health Day 2018 Keep Learning • Share hobbies and interests – Colleagues with particular hobbies and interests could choose to show these to other members of their team; for example, anyone who does knitting or crochet, both of which are also mindful activities. • Stress awareness – HR colleagues could choose to carry out some sessions on stress awareness throughout the day within their service areas. • Mobile Library – The HMG have access to the public health resource centre, who have a limited range of books of stress and mental wellbeing, services could use the resource centre to borrow a range of books to have at a stand in the office over the day.
World Mental Health Day 2018 Give To Others • Community work – Teams could arrange to work with a local community group or tidy up an area within their service’s neighbourhood. • Charity collection event – Services could arrange a charity collection event with their chosen charity; bringing items to work to be donated to and collected by the charity. • Volunteering – all staff are entitled to 10 volunteering hours a year. Services could arrange a day volunteering with one of our third sector organisations in the city, this can be supported through the ‘Helpy Minds’ volunteering strand of the Healthy Minds Group.
World Mental Health Day 2018 Be Mindful • Gardening – Where possible, services could look to tidy up the area outside of their work place; perhaps adding a splash of colour with some planters or border bedding and making a better outside space for teams to enjoy. • Wall of gratitude – Services could provide a ‘wall’ where colleagues can right the top 3 things they are grateful for that day; allowing colleagues to positively reflect on their day. • Body scan guided meditation – Setting aside a quiet room within their building, teams could follow a guided meditation to drawer awareness to their bodies and how and what they are feeling.
