Oh, the places you'll go - A FAIRCOM INTERNET GUIDE
Everyone is
talking about
   it. What is
        Fibre?

Fibre is an internet connection – more effective, more
reliable & faster than ADSL. Because Fibre is so stable and
so fast, it opens up a whole new world of possibilities.
so ... endless
                         adventures

without getting too
technical ...
Fibre is a cable made out of very thin glass-like strands
in a casing. Fibre cables don’t corrode or degrade over
time like copper, and it doesn’t get stolen because it
has no street value. The fibre emits tiny light signals
down the glass strands, which means it is much faster
than ADSL and copper.
that sounds like
a ot of cables
The Fibre cable will be installed through the
existing DStv conduit into your home, next to
the TV point. We decided on this position as
the Telkom point is often in the kitchen which
is not suitable for our equipment. This is also
a central point to cover your home for wifi
   (wireless) internet.

    An easy, fast, flexible,
    reliable & cost effective
    connection that’s world
    class.
It is not the same thing as wifi?

Wifi is just your internet which is
broadcast by your router (modem)
into the air. Having wifi means you
can connect your phone or computer
to the internet without a cable. All
Faircom routers come with wifi built in
for your convenience.
How do I connect my
phone to the wifi?

Simply go to your phone’s wifi
settings, tap on the wifi icon, and wait
for the available networks to appear.
Select your network and enter your
password (these details will be in the
router box). Your phone should then
                      connect automatically any time you
                      are near your wifi.
Uncapped simply means that
you can use as much internet
as you like and never run out of
Gigabytes (GB). It won’t cost you
anything extra. You pay for the
line speed you have, not for how
          much internet you use.

What about my
telephone line
and number?

Faircom can provide Fibre internet
packages bundled with a VoIP
telephone. This telephone allows
for calls that go over the internet.
Often it is cheaper to call mobile and
overseas numbers using our service.

We can port (migrate) your existing
021 telephone number to our service.
You can keep your telephone number,
or we can issue you with a new
telephone number.
How can fibre save me
airtime and mobile data?
If you have a smartphone (a phone with Whatsapp and
other apps that use data) you can connect your phone to the
internet via the wifi. This will save you money as you won’t
need to use your airtime or mobile data to send Whatsapps,
make Whatsapp calls, check Facebook or browse the internet
on your phone.

How do I know if I have
a smartphone?
A smartphone is a mobile phone that performs many of the
functions of a computer, typically has a touchscreen interface,
internet access and an operating system capable of running
downloaded apps. Users are able to run applications like
Whatsapp and Facebook using either mobile data or wifi.
How does
fibre work
with my DStv?

If you are already a DStv customer, you automatically
have the right to access DStv Now at no additional cost.

DStv Now is a service which allows you to stream shows
and movies over the internet. You can choose from
anything that has aired on DStv. What’s great about
DStv Now is that you don’t need to have a satellite dish
installed to use it – it works over the internet. This is
called streaming.

what is
streaming?
Streaming is when you watch TV, listen to
music, or listen to podcasts (talk shows) over
the internet. You don’t have to download
the content before you watch it, the internet
transmits the information to you as you are
busy watching it – it’s a lot like watching TV or
    listening to the radio.
How do I watch DStv Now?
                   How do I stream?

You will need a smart device (a device which connects to the
wifi). This can be a smart TV, a smartphone, a tablet or a laptop.

There are also many small adaptors available, e.g. a Google
Chromecast, that will turn your normal flat-screen TV into
a smart TV, allowing you to use any of the many streaming
                                         services on the market.

Aren’t these

                      expensive?
With most streaming services, you have
to sign up online. Netflix and Showmax
    are substantially less expensive than
DStv, while others like YouTube have
free options. They are both paid services.
Netflix is R140 (2 screens) per month and
Showmax is R89 (5 devices) per month.
