WORLD BOOK DAY in Wymondham starts here!! Thursday 4 March 2021 World Book Day is a celebration of reading, authors, illustrators and books. It’s a charity that changes lives through a love of books and shared reading. Kett’s Books have a lot in common with them. We’re a not-for- profit too, set up to run as a community of volunteers when we saved Wymondham’s bookshop from closing in 2013. And like World Book Day, we also work to change lives by making reading together and reading for pleasure a habit for life—every day of the year. So when World Book Day arrives, it’s a big celebration for us, because everybody’s excited about the thing we love best. It means that by partnering with World Book Day and their sponsors, we can offer every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own. That in itself is something to celebrate: research has found that 1 in 7 children, and 3 in 10 children receiving free school meals, said that the book they ‘bought’ with their World Book Day token had been their first book of their own. So we hope this catalogue helps you get ready to celebrate – whatever your age or reading experience, we’d love you to join in the excitement of reading, and help make it a way of life for our children in Wymondham. Since 2014 Kett’s Books has given nearly 12,000 books to children in Wymondham and the surrounding villages, through the World Book Day project. The bookshop buys each of these books, and receives no credit back for your vouchers.
Every World Book Day, millions of children exchange a voucher for a £1 book Your school should be able to either give you a voucher, or else email you a voucher with a code, so you can bring it to Kett’s Books when you’re out doing your essential shopping. We should have the £1 books from 18 February. All you do is choose from one of these twelve fantastic brand new books, swap it for your voucher, and then get reading! If you’re not getting out right now, don’t worry. We’ll hold onto the books until at least the summer holidays. If your school isn’t able to get a voucher to you, please email outreach@kettsbooks.co.uk and we’ll see if we can help. We want every child in Wymondham to have the joy of choosing their own book! Good to know: You can also use it to take £1 off the cost of another children’s book of over £5. 2021’s £1 Books Because things are changing all the time you might want to check our website for opening hours before you head out. And there are a few terms and conditions there too. www.kettsbooks.co.uk/wbd
Make every day BOOK DAY! Reading isn’t just for World Book Day. It turns out that reading for pleasure can change your child’s future — it has even more influence on their success than family circumstances, parents’ educational background or income. One of the best ways to persuade your children to read, is for them to see you reading. Mums and Dads both, get a book in your hands, and your sons and daughters will (eventually) follow your example. Even better, make sharing stories part of your family routine. Sharing stories for just 10 minutes a day will encourage a love of reading, and it’s fun for everyone! In the park, on the train, on the sofa, on a plane – or even while they’re in the bath! – reading can happen anywhere, at any time. The World Book Day website has loads of materials you can use for all ages, especially while we’re all doing school at home: activity sheets, recipes, games, writing workshops with authors, discussion guides, and even free audio books! There’s plenty to keep you excited about reading! Working with schools World Book Day is often the first time a school thinks about working with a bookshop, but actually it’s a natural partnership. We have direct contact with the authors and publishers who create the books for your children to discover, which means we can make books and reading personal for your youngsters. We also can offer schools additional resources and discounts they may not have access to otherwise. Kett’s Books is a not-for-profit organisation, and we have recommitted this year to our grassroots, community purpose. We are responding to the difficult circumstances our town is in with improved service. We have secured grant funding to grow our support to schools and other community groups, build events, and help your child’s school to do what it does best: to teach your child to find wonder in the world around them. See page 11 for information on our online author events for this year. For more information on how we can help your school, email outreach@kettsbooks.co.uk

One Community, One Book Every year at Kett’s Books we run a project called One Community, One Book, where we invite the entire town to read the same book, so we can all have one big conversation. The 2020 book was Deadland by William Shaw. We will be announcing our next community read soon, and we think you’re going to love it just as much as our volunteers have. It would be wonderful to see lots of you join us for the events we’ll be holding, and we plan to be busy! Sign up to our mailing list on our website www.kettsbooks.co.uk, or follow us on Facebook, to find out about events. One Community, One Book for children NEW for 2021! We have big news: for the first time we are going to have a One Community, One Book selection for children! Mitch Johnson, who wrote Kick, is going to be doing schools events with us online in June and October, and maybe some more in between. You can’t buy Pop! until May, but we plan to share it with your teachers, and hopefully your schools will be able to bring you along to our events. Email outeach@kettsbooks.co.uk for more information. Pop! is about plastic waste, the dangers of overdoing the sugar, and corporate corruption - with hippies, plane crashes and alligators thrown in - and we can’t wait for you to read it. Mitch says: I’m so happy that Pop! has been selected for this year’s One Community, One Book initiative. Wymondham is incredibly fortunate to have a bookshop like Kett’s to promote reading in the community; books are integral to learning, wellbeing and connecting with others, and I can’t wait to share Pop! with young readers in the area. Pre-order Pop! before 1 May for 15% off (£6.80 instead of £7.99) Email outreach@kettsbooks.co.uk to register your interest, or sign up for our newsletter to keep in touch. • Friday 25 June at 10am: Online author event with Mitch • Friday 8 October: Writing workshop, time to be determined • Thursday 21 October at 10am: Online author event with Mitch Kick is available now for £6.99.
