WINTER RECREATION UPDATE The Downers Grove Park District is working hard to navigate the evolving guidelines and safety recommendations to protect the community from the spread of COVID-19. The District remains fiscally responsible, flexible and responsive to the needs of the community as we continue to offer fun, safe recreation-based opportunities in the parks and facilities. Please note, programs and information featured in the Winter Recreation Guide is subject to change due to state guidelines. For ongoing updates and information about available amenities, programs offered and safety procedures, please visit dgparks.org/news/together-again. PARK IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS Due to the financial impact of COVID-19 and in an effort to remain fiscally responsible during this challenging time, several capital improvement projects have been placed on hold until further notice. This includes the McCollum Park project, which was to feature a new sprayground, plaza, pickleball/tennis courts and a widened walking path. SPECIAL EVENTS FORTNITE TOURNAMENT INTERMEDIATE Proficient gamers ages 11 to 20 can join this Virtual Fortnite 1v1. This tournament is for the more advanced player who has played in previous tournaments and is more advanced with building and has higher XP levels. Players are required to have the app 'Discord' for communication. An email will be sent the day before the tournament containing the rules, a link to the Discord private chatroom and a link to the online bracket with assigned bracket group and start time. V-Buck prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. Please note: Space is limited; register early! Enter your home’s outdoor display for a chance to win a holiday prize basket Think you know National Lampoon’s Christmas from local Downers Grove businesses. Choose Vacation? Put your skills to the test as we embark to enter one of two categories – Traditional on a virtual evening featuring a seasonal craft or Griswold. WINTER ACTIVITIES ICE SKATING Weather Permitting The Downers Grove Park District will maintain unsupervised ice skating at McCollum Park this winter. Additional locations will be announced soon at dgparks.org/winter-recreation. Prince Pond will not be available this winter due to a dredging project. Hours are 8:30am to 10pm daily from approximately mid-December through February. It takes several days of sub-zero temperatures for sufficient ice to form. Ice maintenance will occur after staff has completed snow plowing duties for the day. Ice Skating Conditions: Please locate the flag pole at each location for current skating conditions before stepping on the ice. Staff monitors thickness and requires 6 inches of ice to open for skating.
