COACHES CORNER Dear Wildthings, Somehow we are at mid-season, and we are beyond thrilled with how excellent this team is—and how truly awesome each and every Wildthing swimmer is! We know swimmers have been putting the laps in, striving to reach their swim goals, and we just hope they have been having a great time doing it! We coaches are certainly having a blast each and every day! It’s somewhat surreal that just a few months ago, we did not know if we would have any “normal” NVSL season given the global COVID-19 pandemic. In this extraordinary time, we are grateful to you, the Wildthing parents, for trusting us with your amazing children and allowing us to share our love of swimming with them. We hope all Wildthing families had a wonderful 4th of July and enjoyed the holiday weekend. We plan to make the most of the remaining time we have together this summer. The calendar is jam-packed with meets (including the division relay carnival this week), pep rallies (lip sync!), pancakes, and end-of-season banquet. Additionally, if your swimmer is interested in staying in the water beyond this summer— in a competitive team program or simply for conditioning - we wholeheartedly support that idea and are available to discuss as you consider the many options. The LC does plan to offer the once a week Winter Wildthings program, so expect to see more details on that later this month. In the meantime, swim strong and have fun, Wildthings! RECORD BREAKING SWIMS! At the July 3 dual meet, Tessa Jones set a new Langley Club record in the 13-14 Girls 50M Backstroke. Her blazing fast time of 30.46 surpassed the previous record of 30.59, which was set by Adair Sand in 2016 Tessa followed up that record-setting effort with another stellar swim: in a light- ening fast 30.91, Tessa broke the previous record for 13-14 Girls 50M Butterfly! That record, 30.98, was set by Kate Walter in 2018. With more meets and more swims ahead, don’t be surprised to see Tessa break her own records! Congratulations! CROSSPOINTE CRUISERS A MEET RE-CAP The Langley Wildthings celebrated Senior Day by winning a thriller against the Crosspointe Cruisers, 215- 205. Wildthings Seniors 2021 During the last Home Saturday meet against Crosspointe, the Wildthings honored the team’s gradu- ating seniors. The team recognized Ryan, Lilly, Dillon, and Kate during a ceremony between the indi- vidual events and relay events, and the festivities continued post-meet with a celebratory BBQ lunch and cake in the pavilion. Juan Sebastian, a Wildthing since 2015, could not attend, but we congratu- late and wish him well on the road ahead. On the pages that follow, we share the parent letters to their Wildthing seniors. Wildthings Seniors 2021 Ryan Dix Ryan: We are so proud of you and your accomplish- ments. It’s hard to believe that it was only 9 years ago that you became a Langley Wild- thing. But here you are, still a Wildthing, a Junior Coach, and now a graduated Senior off to Clemson University in the fall. We hope you never forget the incredible mo- ments at The Langley Club and that they will forever be part of you. We hope that you have fun in college (but not too much fun!). Always remember that time is precious, do what you love, and as you enter this next chapter of your life, be the author of your own story. We love you. Mom and Dad Wildthings Weekly Issue 4 12 July 5, 2021
Wildthings Seniors 2021 Lilly Hussein Dear Lilly, Hard to believe this is your last summer swim season. We know how much you loved being a part of the Wildthings family for the past 11 years! One of our fondest memories was the day you were got called up to your first A meet and finding the yard sign in the front yard. You were so excited - you kept the sign up on your bedroom wall for years. We’ve watched you grow from be- ing a toddler in the baby pool, to taking swim lessons at the Po- tomac Swim School and Machine, being a Wildthing and then onto junior coach, member of the Captain L squad and lifeguard manager. The Langley Club is one of your happiest summer places (non-COVID year)! We are thankful for all the coaches, families and friends who have encouraged you throughout these years. You have been a joy to watch grow into your own very unique self. You are fiercely independent, unafraid to speak your mind, loyal to your convictions, insanely goofy, and ready to launch into the next chapter of your life as a college student. We are bursting with pride and can’t wait to watch you soar. Keep shining bright baby girl! All our love, Mom, Dad & Emma Wildthings Weekly Issue 4 13 July 5, 2021
Wildthings Seniors 2021 Dillon Proxmire Dillon, Fourteen seasons as a Wildthing! It flew by so quickly. Seems like yesterday 9- year-old Dillon taught the cat-stroke to your coaches and teammates, and then just recently you anchored the Wildthing relay. And your solo Rick Astley lip- sync performance when you were 12 was epic. Through it all, you grinded through TLC summer swim practices and seasons with a smile, while ensuring all Wildthings were laughing and having fun with you. With gold chain necklace and blonde bro-hawk, we are so proud of you and your pursuit of the “Road to the World Series Ring” on the baseball diamond at Langley High School and starting this Fall at Kirchoff Field at Gettysburg College. Work hard on your first semester pre-med courses and labs. Try not to get too side-tracked educating the Gettysburg strength and conditioning staff on the optimal workout regime and cutting-edge training techniques. Also, your brother and fellow-Gettysburg student, Duncan, will not be as responsive as your parents when you forget your gear, equipment or gold chain for baseball practices and games. Put down the phone every once in a while and take in the real world and life, but do answer it whenever your Mother calls. And never stop grinding, Dill. As much as the Wildthings swim team has meant to you in your lifetime, it has meant even more to us to watch you grow up with this team and all the experi- ences that go with it. We are so proud of the young man that you are, especially your hard work, dedication and compassion. Your family and friends are lucky to have you in our lives. We love your sense of humor, stories, and contributions to conversations. It’s time to move forward, and we are ready for your next chapter, Dillon. Wishing you all the best, and thank you for bringing us along for the ride. We love you so much. Never stop grinding, Dill, and continue to enjoy every minute of it. Much Love, Mom, Dad, Duncan and Derek Wildthings Weekly Issue 4 14 July 5, 2021
Wildthings Seniors 2021 Kate Walter Dear Kate, We may be sadder watching your time as a Wildthing come to an end than we were seeing you graduate from high school. Wildthing swim- ming has been a part of our lives for the past 13 years! One of our fa- vorite photos of you was taken when you were 5 years old, sporting green goggles in a Wildthing swimsuit with blonde hair poking out in every direction. You have your hand on your hip in a classic sassy 5- year old pose. Little did we know how much joy we would get over the next 13 years watching you in full Wildthing mode every summer. We can remember team rep Doug Proxmire asking if you’d be able to swim 8&U backstroke in Divisionals at the ripe old age of 6 after another swimmer had to pull out at the last minute. You didn’t hesitate to say yes and finished 5th place! Early on we took Lance and Doug’s “suggestion” that we plan our sum- mer vacations around A meets and relay carnival. And so we did. Since 2009. And we don’t regret a single delayed vacation day. All the cheer- ing as Langley rose from Division 8 up the ranks to Division 2 (with a brief and not-so-memorable one-year pit stop in Division 1). We will always remember clinching the D4 title at Lee Graham in 2015 and watching you pour chocolate syrup all over Mason, Will and Sam. Then taking the Division 3 crown and finishing 8th at All Star Relay Carnival two years later. We never would have guessed at that time how much fun our family would have getting up early on Saturday mornings to watch you and your brothers swim; all the pep rallies, funny skits, relay carnivals, splash parties, face painting, singing, dancing on the pool deck, pancake breakfasts, Subway lunches, all star and record-breaking swims! Summer swimming has brought so much joy to all our lives and brought us some of our best memories these past 13 years. You have made friendships that will last a lifetime and we will cherish these memories from summer swim team long after your name is off the rec- ords board. You have such a bright future ahead of you — Evanston and Northwest- ern are lucky to get you these next 4 years! We know you will bring the same creativity, wit and generosity of spirit to college and can’t wait to see you make your mark. We will miss your love of Kombucha, yoga and podcasts; your open-mindedness, kind heart and quick wit; your lead foot, killer pool deck dance moves and healthy appetite. But most of all we will miss watching you take her mark and swim for the Wildthings each Saturday in the summer. Love you so much— Your biggest fans: Mom, Dad, Whit & Colin Wildthings Weekly Issue 4 15 July 5, 2021
