From the Principal

Dear Friends of St Paul’s

Building Community

Over the first three weeks of the College Year, we have held several significant events all of which continue to strengthen our communications

with and support for our families. T his is, of course, withing the limits of the COVID restrictions.

Our Year 7, Year 8 and Year 12 Parent Information evenings were extremely well attended and provided the College with the opportunity
to outline our Middle Years philosophy and programs (to the 7 and 8 families) while the Yr 12 families were offered support with a
presentation from Ms Kirrilie Smout from Developing Minds, a company that will work with us and the Year 12 cohort throughout the
year.

Perhaps the highlight of the week (for me anyway!!) was the Welcome to St Paul’s / Rite of Passage Ceremony, for our Reception
students and their families. This is a very beautiful and special ceremony that has been developed over the last few years to signify the
beginning of a 13-year journey and partnership between the boys, the families, and the school. As with all ceremonies and liturgies it was
filled with symbolism and our presentation to the boys of a blueberry plant represents the nurturing and growth that we will all experience
together.

It was lovely to speak to some families who have an older boy who experienced this ceremony two years ago and to hear that their
lemon tree is flourishing – just like the boys!! Our thanks must go to Ms Angela Collins (our APRIM) and Mrs Emily Sayer (Head of
Primary) for the preparation and conducting of this inspirational event. We are grateful that Fr Matthew could also attend and offer a very
special blessing to the boys and families.

L ENT
This week we begin the very significant Christian season of Lent. Lent is a time of both repentance and humility. It is a time when we
acknowledge that we are very much human, prone to making mistakes and we must accept the responsibility for this and be determined
to atone for any wrong doings of the past. We can do this in two ways. Firstly, by the traditional “giving-up” of something we like or just as

                                                                                                                                            2/9

powerful by “taking-up” new positive, live-giving habits that will benefit other people. This Lenten season also prepares us for Easter and
the most powerful event in the history of the Christian world where Christ gave his life for us and then proved everything we do in this life,
has a purpose, by rising from the dead.

Lent began for us here at St Paul’s by the celebration of our Opening School Mass and Ash Wednesday Liturgy which we combined.
Again, Fr Matthew presided and the liturgy, prepared by Ms Collins, was again very moving and powerful. I would particularly like to
sincerely thank the students whose reverence, behaviour and participation was nothing short of sensational. Wednesday was a very hot
day, the distribution of the ashes had to change in format due to COVID restrictions, which proved challenging, but the students were
awesome in their commitment to maintaining an atmosphere of complete respect for the occasion.

On Wednesday 10 February we held our first College Tour for the year, and as with the remaining three we are to hold (dates on the
website) it was booked out, with over 160 people in attendance. The response to our move to becoming a co-ed school next year
continues to grow and put pressure on for places.

Tonight (Thursday) we will hold an exciting and first-time event, where we welcome all enrolled and prospective girls and their families.
We will be providing feedback on uniform, building developments, and answering any questions and enquiries that families may have as
we transition into this exciting new era for the College. Again, this has been booked out to capacity and signifies the start of a year-long
program of communication and events for these and all incoming families to St Paul’s in 2022 and beyond.

God Bless

I am noticing more and more black sandshoes being worn with the summer dress uniform. Our current uniform, which is shared with all
families on our website, and this includes is black lace up leather dress shoes. Having a set uniform makes it easy for families in their
purchases and eliminates any arguments with the children. It is also about consistency and fairness for those who are striving to support
the college by having their children wear the correct uniform. I know it can be hard and some children have feet that are hard to fit. If this
is the case, please come and speak to me as I may be able to help you with some ideas on where to make some purchases. I thank you
for your support in this matter.

On Monday you would have received a direct message and an information package from the Australian Dental Foundation offering a
free dental check up for any primary students. This is not compulsory, but it is a wonderful opportunity for child to access dental services
for free. If you would like your child to visit the dentist, please complete the form provided and return it to your child’s teacher. Please
come and see me if you have any questions or would like further information.

Last year we were forced to postpone and reduce our planned running of these two amazing wellbeing programs. In 2021, we will be
offering both these programs again. Further dates and times about parent information sessions will be sent home soon, but if you are
wanting your child to be involved this year, please send me an email and I can add his name to the list. Again if you would like further
information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

God’s blessings,

Year 9 Retreat
Last Friday 5 February, our Year 9 cohort engaged in their retreat, ‘Refreshing Relationships’. The day started with a liturgy in our
Chapel, followed by team building games and an afternoon at Water World. The Year 9s were involved in a day of embracing diversity
and respecting others and learning about the importance of self and others. A great day!

"My two highlights from the Water World Retreat were that we got to do anything we wanted there such as swim in the deep pool (If you
were able to swim well), go on the water slides and be able to control what you wanted to do on the retreat. My other highlight was the

Changes to the Year 7-12 Work Completion Sessions
Changes to the Year 7-12 Work Completion Sessions to be implemented on Monday 1 March 2021 (start of Week 6).

St Paul’s Learning Council has reviewed its Work Completion Sessions (WCS) procedure and made changes relating to the time that
Work Completion Sessions are undertaken and the deadline for each assessment.

Work Completion sessions (WCS) provide an environment where students are supported to complete their evidence of learning pieces
because:

all learning is valued and valuable
assessment tasks are the means through which students can demonstrate their learning; therefore, all assessment tasks are
required to be completed to the best of the students’ ability
to support students to develop skills to be successful at school and post school
students who complete all set tasks are likely to achieve success in the subject
          completing tasks is not optional.

Work Completion sessions were previously held during each lunchtime but are now scheduled each Monday through to Thursday
between 3:15 – 4:25pm (after school). Work Completion Sessions will be held in the College library and supervised by a member of our
teaching staff.

At the end of the Work Completion Session students are required to upload their tasks (or provide a hard copy to the supervising
teacher). Subject teachers will mark the students work based on the student work received at the end of the Work Completion Session.
No further extensions will be given (unless under extenuating circumstances, which is negotiated by the subject teacher, student and
their parent/carer).

These changes aim to better reflect real world expectations and allows students to be accountable by supporting their time management
skills.

St ud e nt s’ R e spo nsibil it ie s

Follow up with subject teachers after being absent from school (e.g. illness, VET course, excursions)

Use SEQTA as a tool by which to support their child in completing work by the due date.

Subm issio n o f Wo rk
If a student is not able to meet a due date or supervised task because of extenuating circumstances, they must:
Negotiate an extension with the relevant subject teacher before the due date

provide an explanation and/or medical certificate for the request of an extension from parents/caregivers prior to the due date.
Please note a work completion session will not be issued until the Subject Teacher has had dialogue with a parent/caregiver to
confirm the College’s requirements of the student.

E x pe ct a t io ns o f st ud e nt s a t t e nd ing a w o rk co m pl e t io n se ssio n
Students are required to attend the WCS from 3:15 - 4:25pm (students are not permitted to leave a WCS early unless picked up
from the library by their parent/carer)
Students need to report to the library and ensure that their attendance has been recorded by the supervising teacher
Students need to work on the required task, with the intent to complete the task during the work completion session.
Students are required to upload their assessment task or hand up a hard copy to the supervising teacher at the end of the WCS

If a student does not attend the WCS, the subject teacher will notify home and provide a grade based on the evidence of learning
provided and record this result in SEQTA. This final grade may be calculated through drafts, classroom observations, partly completed
tasks. If there is no evidence of learning provided by the student, then a zero grade will be issued.

Students who do not attend a WCS will also be placed on an afternoon Community Service, supervised by a Leader of House for non-
attendance.

Safeguarding & Child Protection
Child protection and safeguarding is the responsibility of all members of our community to ensure that young people are safe, included,
healthy and happy.

As educators…our staff, as well as contractors and volunteers, undertake site-specific training, as well as training directed by Catholic
Education South Australia and Edmund Rice Education Australia. We are mandated to report any concerns about child safety and want
all members of our community to proactively inform us of any safeguarding concerns.

As students…our young people are regularly engaging with the mandated Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum, most obviously
identifying at least one adult they can trust as a crucial first step to keeping themselves and others safe. Giving students voice and
helping them identify risks is another important part of our commitment to Child Protection.

As members of St Paul’s broader community…please discuss any concerns around child protection and safeguarding with a staff
member or with me, our College Child Protection Officer, to ensure that you are part of our community’s commitment to keeping young
people safe.

For any specifics, the St Paul’s College Child Protection Policy is a great reference point:
https://assets.cdn.thewebconsole.com/S3WEB7579/images/2018_CHILD-PROTECTION-POLICY.pdf

As our governing body, the Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) child protection policy is another great resource:
https://www.erea.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/child-protection-policy.pdf

Fortunate for the support of EREA, and our College’s commitment to their Safeguarding Framework, members of our community are
also urged to familiarise themselves with the following EREA Safeguarding Website: https://www.erea.edu.au/child-safeguarding/#

Together and with a diligent commitment to child protection and safeguarding, our College community will meet our joined expectation to
keep all young people safe.

Robotics Team

E m po w e rm e nt
What an incredible experience! Our rookie team took a giant leap today, we became totally student led. As Coach, it was inspirational to
watch our team Captain, Caleb and the executive team of Chris, Bradley and Jamie, plan and deliver the pre-season training sessions
for our quickly growing team.

A SWOT analysis helped us identify Team Goals for 2021. They quickly realised that programming was critical to success in FTC. The
Paladins need to be able to include a programmer on every mission team so testing can be seamless and not rely on a few to write the
code we needed. They also decided that programming is a key skill for the future and the team could help provide an opportunity to
learn new languages and use them for real world applications.

As they are currently competing in the Student Robotics International, they decided to use the WeBots as a vehicle. The virtual
environment uses Python and provides instant feedback with a fun, game based task. Caleb created a GitRepository accessed easily
through their website at: https://www.paladins18003.org.au

The 15 newbies who joined the team were able to easily follow a complex series of program installations to finally reach the point of
writing code.

In one short, fun filled hour, the rookies were coding their weBots, feeling successful and anxious to learn more. The executive team
learned to plan a session, manage a large and enthusiastic group of students, chair meetings, set agendas, plan events like the Mars
Rover Morning, and so much more.

I cannot wait to see what the team will achieve this year!

Volleyball Report
TEAM: Middle B1 Volleyball

DATE: 12 Feb 2021
GAME: SPC Vs Pedare College
RESULT: LOST

SCORES: SPC 1 Sets 64 Points OPPSN: 2 Set Points 64 Points

Best Performance: Oliver Castillo

The St Paul’s volleyball team, made up of Yr 9 students, was keen to be playing. The first set was closely fought (21-25) but the lack of
communication impacted on the team’s chances. The second set saw a more confident team take to the court. With clearer
communication and consistent serving the team moved ahead. Oliver Castillo served a series of penetrating serves which gave the team
a comfortable lead. The team worked well. Ahmad Ibrahimi digs were effective, Daniel White was the master of the back serve and
Mustafa Hassani played numerous spikes. Carlin Verrall and Sohrab Al Hasan were steady allrounders. The set went St Paul's way (25-
14). In the final set, too many errors cost the team the match (18-25).
