Welcome to Week 6 Term 3, National Science Week - Congratulations to Mrs Georgia Shephard and the Primary Staff on a fantastic Science Week celebration last week. The K—6 students all engaged in fun activities based around scientific themes. Skool Loop App - Have you downloaded the free Skool Loop App yet? This is anoth- er great way for parents to stay informed about school dates and events; read our school Newsletter, as well as a convenient way to notify school about student absences. Instructions on how to download this App are in this newsletter. Check-in Assessment - This week students from Years 5 and 9 will complete an online reading and numeracy assessment. This will provide the school with valuable information, particularly this year when students have not completed NAPLAN. The Check-in assessment can supplement existing school practices to identify how stu- dents are performing in literacy and numeracy and to help teachers tailor their teaching more specifically to student needs. Year 3 students will complete their as- sessment in Week 2 next term. Merit Awards - Congratulations to all students who received Mid-Term Merit Awards this week at the Primary and Secondary Assemblies. Attendance - Today the Home School Liaison Officer visited to check on student attendance. All students who fall below 85% attendance are closely monitored. A number of students have already had letters sent home in regard to their attend- ance. Further communication will follow for students with attendance concerns. Par- ents are reminded that students are required to attend school every day unless they are unwell. Mobile Phone Use - Due to repeated inappropriate use of Mobile Phones at school by secondary students, phones are no longer able to be used at school, unless under the direct instruction of a teacher. (Students in Years 11 and 12 will still be able to ‘appropriately’ use their phones during recess and lunch time). This ‘ban’ will remain in place for the remainder of this term. If students are seen with their phones out they will be asked to turn them off and place them in their bag. Failure to do so will require the student to take their phone to the front office for the remainder of the day. Parents will be contacted if students do not comply with this rule. Primary school students are not allowed phones at school as per Department of Education guidelines. Shout out to our SASS Staff - As part of SASS recognition week we would like to thank our school and administra- tive staff who provide comprehensive support in our school. This year they have had to be increasingly flexible to adapt to changing scenarios and pandemic restrictions, highlighting the vital role they play in keeping our school running efficiently everyday. Thank you to all of our wonderful SASS staff. COVID-19 - Parents and carers are reminded NOT to send children to school if they are unwell, even if they have the mildest flu-like symptoms. Students who come to school with flu like symptoms will be sent home. Students and staff with flu-like symptoms will need to provide a copy of a negative COVID-19 test before being permitted to return to school. Have a great week Donna Lane
DCS Student Representative Council encourage all students and staff to support this day! Friday, 4th September, 2020 Wear your favourite Jersey! Jersey Day has been inspired by the story of 13 year old Nathan Gremmo, who was tragically lost in an accident in 2015. Nathan's family chose to give the gift of life to others to honour the legacy of Nathan's generous personality. Jersey Day is not about raising funds - it is all about raising awareness for The Organ & Tissue Authority and the DonateLife Network. The intention is to begin the discussion about Organ & Tissue Donation, fill social media with Jersey Day images and to encourage people to visit the donatelife.gov.au website to register their Organ & Tissue Donation intentions.
Last Thursday K-6 students celebrated Science Week in style. Students were put in teams and faced many scien- tific challenges. The engineering feat of building a 1/2 metre high bridge that suspends an egg made out of noth- ing but newspaper and masking tape was certainly a highlight. A big thank you to Mrs Shephard and Mrs Gal- lagher for organising the day. K/1 were very sad to lose Mrs Stadler last week as she finished her 4 week prac and headed home to Murwil- lumbah. Mrs S will be sorely missed and we wish her all the best for her teaching career. Please don’t forget to return the Life Education notes this week if you haven’t already. The Life Education Van (featuring Healthy Harold) will be coming to DCS next week on Thursday and Friday. Each class will visit the van for a lesson linked to its PDH curriculum. Don’t forget the visit only costs $5 due to being heavily subsidised by a large donation by the late Arthur Upston, for which we continue to be so grateful for. The DCS Public Speaking Competition commences next week (Week 7). We will be discussing the competition in class this week and all students will write their speeches as part of next week’s homework. Speeches will be given in class in Week 8. Congratulations to Sophie Kline for winning last week’s Fish award. The theme was ‘Caring for property’, which Sophie demonstrated with her continual effort looking after the sports shed at recess and lunch. This week’s fo- cus is ‘Wearing our school uniform with pride’. Next Friday (4th September) Dunedoo Central will be participating in Jersey Day to show our support for the DonateLife Network. This SRC initiative asks students and staff to wear their favourite jersey to school. There on your Positive Behaviour is no cost for this as we are simply raising awareness Last week’s winner was about organ donation. Sophie Kline Have a great week. For Mr Ben Kline Caring For Property This week in Mathematics we are starting a new topic ‘Chance’. We will be looking at the language of probability and using relative frequencies to predict probabilities. Weekly homework is due Thursday and I hope multiplication tables are still being practiced at home regularly. Mrs Cathy Gallagher

They have completed an introduction to Algebra and have just begun ‘Operations with Decimals’ Students are receiving regular homework that is designed to reinforce con- cepts being covered in class and revise earlier topics 8 Mathematics Displaying and analysing data has been the focus of Year 8 Mathematics. We have incorporated various statistics related to the Coronavirus and studied the trends occurring and have tried to make predictions regard- ing what we think may occur as the year progresses. Sectors graphs were constructed to display the breakdown of cases throughout Austral- ia this year. 5.3 Mathematics 5.3 Mathematics has furthered their competencies of analysing Statistical Measures, including looking at Standard Deviation and constructing lines of best fit from Scatterplots. This has lead nicely into our topic on Linear Equations where we are finding various ways to graph straight lines and finding the equations to represent these relationships. 12 Standard Mathematics With the trials completed, there is only one assessment item left this term. Students have an assignment to work through in preparation for their Week 9 in class test on ‘Critical Path Analysis’ Students should be aiming at completing a minimum of one past paper, out of class each week as a way of revising all concepts in preparation for their upcoming HSC examination.
