The LORDS Voice Lutheran Ormeau Rivers District School Newsletter Year 6 Canberra Tour Students from our Year 6 classes, Miss Barclay, Mr Steinhardt, Mrs Fry, Mrs Carlson, Mr Scott and Mrs Hardke have recently returned from the LORDS tour of Canberra. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist our families in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government contributed $60 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. We are grateful for this contribution. We are so proud of the students in the way they conducted themselves throughout the trip. They represented themselves, their families and our school beautifully and hopefully have many great memories and stories to share about this experience. We look forward with anticipation to next year’s Canberra experience. At the old Parliament House, we entered an interactive room where you learn information on Prime Ministers from Edmund Barton to Scott Morrison. In the House of Representatives we talked about the British coat of arms (lion and unicorn). Jessica, Cormac & Sam My favourite part was AIS for many different reasons such as we got to play some simulator games like bike riding or we could see how long we could hold our chin above a bar. We got to see very talented people such as swimmers, gymnasts and much more. Eve The LORDS Voice Page 4
We went to the Australian War Memorial and watched an interesting video on the rules before viewing a show case on what happened in World War 1. We then explored the aircraft and submarines area. All the things on display were real and were from World War 1 and 2 including boats, planes, guns, bombs, army weapons, army uniforms and much more. Sianna, Haylee and Layla My favourite part of Canberra was by far Questacon with many different rooms and levels, what’s not to love? Questacon held many different surprises such as the free fall [slide that drops you] or the giant moon that tricked you into thinking you were actually in space. Amelie R On the last night in Canberra we went to the Botanic Gardens. It was an experience of a lifetime. There were different types of plants and animals. There was a cassowary statue with white eyes to help attract other animals. It looked very cool. We had many stops because we heard lots of animals. We saw a ring- tailed possum and a waddle bird. When we finished, we had a hot Milo and a cookie. It warmed you up while you walked but still it was very cold and I would recommend layers of warm clothing if you’re going to go yourself. The crew that takes you on tour are very nice and friendly. Keenan and Kyronne At the Australian War Memorial, I learnt that the eternal flame would never burn out, even in the rain. This shows that we will always remember them and the brave people still fighting now. Ryder When Year 6 went to the Australian Institute of sport (AIS) we went and looked at the Australian Institute of Sport pool. The payment of the pool all together was equal to $17million dollars just for the pool. We also saw the volleyball court and they had lots of nets around the area for protection. After that we went to see their gymnasium where we saw gymnasts practise for competition. Alice and Ella The LORDS Voice Page 5
