An annual physical is REQUIRED to participate in the band program. Students will NOT be allowed to participate in marching band activities until physical form is on file for the 2018-2019 school year. You will need to go to arbiterathlete.com and complete the process. Everything is done online this season. Charms is a great place to find all events happening in the band. They have a website at https:/www.charmsoffice.com, as well as an app for smartphones. We will use Charms more extensively this year. We will use Charms as much as possible for communications, volunteer sign up, notification of activities and events. School code is: MagnoliaHSBand. Password: your student’s student ID. Marching Season Success Tips Marching Season is upon us once again! Hopefully, this information will help you arrive prepared and be successful for each rehearsal and performance. Items for all rehearsals: Water jug - It is very important to stay hydrated! Drinking fountains are not available near the practice field. We recommend a ½ gallon (minimum) insulated jug. Please label your jug with your name. There will be water dispensers to refill your jugs during practice. T-shirt / Shorts- Wearing light colored, white t-shirts along with comfortable, breathable shorts is highly recommended. Students should never wear long pants or jeans to a summer or early fall rehearsal. Doing so could cause overheating, which could be a serious health risk. Comfortable, supportive shoes with socks - Wear comfortable, lace-up shoes that are appropriate for athletic activity. We recommend wearing socks to help avoid blisters. Sunglasses and hat – These items will offer protection from the heat and sun. Sunscreen and Chap-Stick - Use sweat proof SPF 30 or above to protect from sunburn. Chap-stick will protect your lips from the sun, heat, and dryness that often accompanies playing a wind instrument. Drill BINDER – You must provide a 2” 3 ring binder and at least 50 clear sheet protectors to place your papers. Your drill binder will contain all of your drill sheets for the marching program. Flip folder & music lyre - Used to hold music. You should have purchased one in junior high. Please have in your possession upon arrival. WATER, WATER, WATER: You must stay hydrated!!! You will sweat a lot during Band Camp. We practice outside and this is TEXAS -- HOT! HOT! HOT! Avoid caffeine and carbonated beverages. Avoid sugary drinks like Kool-aid, soda, or juice. These drinks actually dehydrate you. Water is best; Gatorade or other sports drinks are ok, but water is best! Did we mention - drink water! Other tips for success: Expect to work hard. Expect a suntan or sunburn, with tan lines from your shirts, shorts and socks. Expect to be sore and tired. After marching season is over; you will be craving for it to start again next year. We are looking forward to a good season, and a lot of fun! Be on time: To be early is to be on time; to be on time is to be late! Please ensure the success of every rehearsal by being on time. Keep cool physically and mentally! First make sure you are not overheating. (water, water, water) Then, keep a calm mind. It may take a few times before you understand a concept. Don't get frustrated, keep trying and listen graciously to advice and you WILL eventually get it. We are here to help. RESPECT: Respect the directors, staff, leadership, other students, and the parents that are helping! Always say please and thank you! You are part of an amazing team of young adults! Congratulations!
Signs of Dehydration The body’s initial responses to dehydration are thirst (to increase water intake) along with decreased urine output (to try to conserve water). The urine will become concentrated and more yellow in color. As the level of water loss increases, more symptoms can become apparent. Additional signs and symptoms of dehydration include: Dry mouth The eyes stop making tears Sweating may stop Muscle cramps Nausea and vomiting Heart palpitations Lightheadedness (especially when standing) Signs of Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke The body normally generates heat as a result of metabolism, and is usually able to dissipate the heat by radiation of the heat through the skin or the evaporation of sweat. However, in extreme heat, high humidity, or vigorous exertion under the sun, the body may not be able to dissipate the heat. The body temperature then rises, sometimes up to 106 F or higher. Another cause of heat exhaustion/stroke is dehydration. A dehydrated person may not be able to sweat fast enough to dissipate heat, which, in turn, causes the body temperature to rise. Other signs of heat exhaustion/stroke are: Nausea Vomiting Fatigue Weakness Headache Muscle cramps/aches Dizziness It’s very important to have plenty of water and watch for signs!
UNIFORM INFORMATION 2018-2019 Marching uniforms are supplied by Magnolia ISD for all band students. While you are not required to pay for the uniform, you and your student are financially responsible for it. Uniforms will be fitted and assigned on Friday, July 27th (Soph/Jr/Sr) and Saturday, July 28th (Freshman). Students pick up their uniform in the uniform room in the band hall before each game and competition. Students are then responsible to return the uniform to the uniform room in the band ball once they return home from the performance. Under no circumstance should students take their uniforms home unless it’s time for them to be laundered. Marching uniforms will be washed on a schedule throughout the season. Students are responsible for keeping up with all parts of their uniform. Damage to, or loss of, any part of the uniform will be replaced at student/parent expense. The marching uniform supplied by Magnolia ISD consist of bibber pants, jacket, gauntlets, hat, and mirror. Uniform parts you must purchase consist of a show t-shirt, dry-fit shirt, compression/spandex shorts, shoes, gloves, black mid-calf socks, and water jug. The show t-shirt and gloves are covered by the band fee, as well as water jug (freshmen / incoming students only). Dry-fit shirts are ordered during Shop and Go, and compression/spandex shorts and black socks are purchased on your own (more info below). Water jugs will be available for purchase at Shop and Go for those who need a replacement. All new marchers will need to purchase marching shoes. Any returning students will also need to order NEW model marching shoes (DSI VIPER) in black and they are required by 2019. This year the shoes are to be ordered online by the family. Shoes can be ordered at: https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2/138-9258755-2211216?url=search-alias%3Daps&field- keywords=dsi+viper+marching+shoe https://www.bandshoppe.com/DSI-Viper-Marching-Band-Shoes-p/9080-9085s.htm http://www.themusicshoppe.com/shop/dsi-viper-marching-shoes https://dshowcase.com/product/marching-band/viper-marching-shoe/ https://www.drillcomp.com/directors-showcase-viper-marching-shoes-shvi.html https://www.fjminc.com/viper.html http://www.southernperformances.com/viper-marching-shoe-by-dsi/ All students are responsible for the up keep of their shoes. It is recommended to write students name inside shoes, and to clean and polish shoes frequently. Certain items are a requirement and some must be ordered over summer to ensure timely delivery. These are: Black band dry-fit shirt - This is worn under the marching uniform, at every game and every contest. All marchers need to have two shirts. Black socks - All black socks must be at least mid calf length or higher. We recommend sports performance athletic socks. They have extra padding, absorb moisture, and help prevent blisters. Be sure that your student brings home his or her socks, compression/spandex shorts, and t-shirts after each event to be washed. Sweaty uniform parts can be very smelly after being left for a week! During the fall semester, boys are fitted for a tuxedo and girls for a concert dress.

2018-2019 Magnolia HS Band Boosters The Magnolia High School Band Booster Club (MHSBBC), 501c3 non-profit, is dedicated to supporting the directors and students of the Magnolia High School Band. Through various fundraising activities, we provide items not covered through ordinary ISD budgets. The MHSBBC also provides man hours to promote student and community spirit, serve as chaperones for all band trips, aid in the feeding of band students while at performances and competitions, and assist with moving equipment and props during halftime & competition performances. The Band’s success depends not just on the hard work of the directors, staff, and students, but on the commitment, time and resources of the MHSBBC members. Together we can make this a very successful and memorable year! By getting involved, you'll not only support a wonderful program, but you'll get to know your student's friends and their parents too. The use of your time and talents will make all the difference to the band! The more you give, the more they get! Band is not just about music. The band experience is about goal setting, cooperation, camaraderie, time management, leadership, competition, performance, and achievement. These life skills can certainly help each student grow into a successful adult. Thirty years from now, your son or daughter may forget all they have learned about playing an instrument, but the lessons they obtain regarding character and integrity will be with them for life. Parental interest and involvement in their student’s music education can be the most influential factor impacting overall student success. Students with parents who are actively involved in their endeavors, have an exponentially greater chance for success than the student whose parents show little or no interest. You don't need musical experience to effectively support your student's development. We encourage parents to: provide equipment in good working condition provide all accessories needed provide a productive place in which to practice. Encourage them to practice and play for family Praise them when they practice regularly and offer encouragement when they don't. What else can I do? Stay informed! Besides talking to your student: 2. ATTEND BOOSTER MEETINGS held every month in Magnolia HS Band Hall. 3. Support the Band – Become a Band Booster Volunteer!
