How we coach and play football, including • player development and streaming Part One • the roles of coaches, managers and parents • our pitches • our gear 4
Beechwood FC was formed in 1996 as a Beechwood community-based Football Club Football From a squad of 12 boys and four coaches in 1996, we have grown to a Club with over 600 Club players, including close to 100 girls, over 100 parent/professional coaches and 1,000 parents 5
We are a community-based Club that wants to play progressive* football, with continuous Football player development as a core aim Strategy By learning to play football in a supportive environment, all our players will gain a lifetime love of the "Beautiful Game" Progressive football : Smart, attacking football where the players - • Play the ball forward • Play possession football – where passing/creative/tactical skills are needed • Play intelligent football – where decision making is key 6
• The Club has adopted the FAI's Player Development Plan • The focus is on players' enjoyment and skill development, not on winning at all costs Player Development • Introduces a uniform playing and coaching style in order to develop skilful and creative players • There is a gradual build-up towards the full game (4v4, 5v5, 7v7, 9v9, 11v11) to increase time on the ball at the younger ages https://www.fai.ie/sites/default/files/atoms/files/PDP%20Briefing%20Document.pdf 7
• Every player develops their football ability at a different pace • Player streaming is the process that allows the movement of players between the teams within an age group, in line with their level of ability Streaming • The primary aim is for all players to have fun, (see also pages 33 to 38) whilst developing at their own pace and playing in a team which is consistent with their ability • Streaming starts at Under 9. We have a clear policy and use a fair, transparent and planned approach • Streaming is not "one and done", it's reviewed each year 9
• From zero to almost 100 players in less than two years! We aim to reach parity in numbers with The Girls Game is the boys • A squad at every age group from the Under 7s growing at academy to Under 12s Beechwood • From Under 8 up playing in the DDSL on Below is a picture of our very first Girls team in 2018 Sundays • Supported by Pearl Slattery, Development Officer, Women’s Department, FAI 10
• The Club relies on volunteer parents to provide coaching and management for all squads • Training is provided – and we do ask that parent coaches complete the relevant FAI Kickstart Coaches, coaching programmes Managers • Coaches must also complete Garda Vetting and a Child Safeguarding course and Parents • Training and support to our parent coaches is provided by our professional coaches, who also provide direct coaching and support to squads on a rotational basis • Whether coaching/managing or not, all parents have a role to play in supporting their squads! 11
• Motivate your players, whilst always coaching in a positive manner. This helps build player confidence and self-motivation • Praise and encourage your players to have the freedom to express themselves • Let players make their own decisions on the pitch. Constantly instructing them on what to do does not help their development. Coaches must accept that mistakes are part of The role of a the game and part of player learning and development • Focus on the quality of play (when attacking, defending and Coach in transition) rather than on winning games • Set development ‘goals’ in what you want to achieve with your team/players. For example, “Today we will be focusing on attacking play.” • Engage with your players by asking questions. Talk and discussion will help create improved awareness in their role, on and off the field • Encourage your players to show respect for the opponents and match officials (no back chat) and to play by the rules • Encourage your players to work together and achieve team objectives 12
• Engage with parents after games/training sessions • The coach must intervene immediately where his / The role of a her players fail to show high standards of respect, good attitude and behavior. Failure to intervene Coach will lead to this behavior being repeated cont. • Be patient, stay calm and always be in control of your emotions • Lead by example on and off the pitch 13

• Beechwood FC as a Junior Football club solely exists to develop our player’s football ability, for them to have fun in an inclusive environment and for them to develop a lifelong love of the 'beautiful game' • Player streaming is the process that allows the movement of players between the teams, in line with their level and their Player pace of development • Every player develops at a different speed and pace Development • The primary aim is for all the players to have fun, whilst and Streaming developing at their own pace and playing in a team which is consistent with their level of ability • Streaming can be a contentious issue and it is inevitable that there will be some level of debate and difference of opinion • The club has developed the following Streaming Policy to ensure that players and parents understand why the club streams and how the process works 33
• Beechwood FC plays in the DDSL league http://www.ddsl.ie/competitionstabs.aspx?oid=1015 • From Under 9s BFC enters teams in a league where all the other teams are streamed according to ability and level of player development • The aim of streaming is to grade players according to their ability to ensure each child is appropriately challenged for their stage of development. Players are unique and develop at a different pace. By streaming players BFC is aiming to Player match players of equal standard so that they can have a fun and competitive game of football. What that means is the more developed players playing their equivalent and those who are still developing will have more time on the ball to Development: learn and develop their own skills • The streaming will be done in a fair, transparent and Why Stream? planned manner. Communication is key, with coaches, players and parents being updated on the streaming process • Once established, streaming has to be constantly monitored with players moving up and down in tandem with their own development. This is the coaches' responsibility and the Football Committee closely monitors this in conjunction with our professional coaches • The Club regularly intervenes to ensure movement takes place and we can assist in taking the decision away from a conflicted parent/coach if that is required 34
• This section outlines the player assessment process, this is the procedure and framework within which we can manage the movement of players between teams in each age group • The Club’s aim is to offer football at a suitable level to all its players to that end it will grade players according to their ability to ensure each child is appropriately challenged for their stage of development. Furthermore, the Club aims Streaming – to minimize any confusion about why this is being undertaken and to treat the players with sensitivity Club Policy • The procedures below will ensure that all our players are treated openly, honestly and consistently by the Club in how it runs its player assessments, the welfare of the child being the overriding principle. Communication to players and parents is crucial to avoid any misunderstandings An overriding goal of these procedures is to provide timely communication to parents and children and to put the welfare of the child and their best interests at the heart of all decisions 35
• It is the Club’s stated policy that Beechwood Players play at the highest level and standard possible • The highest team in any age group will outline which players it requires and explain what they are looking for (who they would like to move up/down) For each player being moved (up or down), manager explains why and asks can they be accommodated • This process will be repeated for the next highest team and so forth. Managers cannot retain any players, if the club feels they need to move up a level. Where Player • a player does not want to move up a level the club will not force them to do so The movement of players should be handled in an organized and coordinated manner. Towards the end of the season the managers of each squad plus the Assessments Club's professional coaches will organize players assessment to assess the players • The managers will provide the Club coaches with an assessment of each player in their squad over the course of the season and their player requirements for the following season • Decisions on player assessments should not be left to start of the new season • Clarity should be given to all affected children/parents in a timely manner, so they have the flexibility and time to consider their options. New squads for each age group should be in place one month before the new season starts 36
• If a player is to be moved to a lower team twice or more within a 12-month period, approval must be received from the Football Committee chairman in advance of communication with the parent/child • The Highest team will have its player requirements assessed and accommodated first, the next highest team thereafter etc Player • Movement in players cannot result in squad sizes exceeding those recommended by club Player movement cannot result in an existing BFC Assessments • player not being offered football On-going Assessment and communication with Parent/Child Where a player is Cont. struggling, and it is felt that the level of football is too high for them, this should be highlighted during the year to parent and child • A clear explanation should be given as to where the child needs work and guidance on how they can improve. This process will ensure that there are no surprises at season end. To reiterate, sensitive and timely communication is key in all dealings with parents and children 37
