Darien Senior Programs Mather Center Highlights & Happenings July 2021 Dear Darien Senior Members, We will be adding more class and service offerings this month. Using the same system for sign-ups, Darien Residents can sign-up starting Wednesday June 23rd, and Non Resident Members can sign-up starting Wednesday June 30th. All classes highlighted in yellow are IN CENTER! Call 203 656-7490! For July, we have added a couple of more classes and increased the allotted time members can remain in the building. We are so happy with the response and cooperation from our members, however, we are still following the Connecticut State Department of Public Health’s recommendations for the demographic age population we serve. As a reminder, these protocols are listed below. Again if you would like a hard copy of the Newsletter please stop by. We are very hopeful that we will continue on this trend of adding more classes and opening more freely in the months ahead! Mask are Mandatory: Masks must be worn covering the nose and mouth completely while indoors at the center, including exercise classes. Social Distancing: Everyone is required to maintain 6-foot social distancing while inside the Center. Hand Sanitizer/Hand Washing: Hand Sanitizer will be available at multiple locations within our building, but most importantly at the entrance. You may wash your hands as an alternative. Entrance/Exits: The Main Entry to the Mather Center will be the only entrance to the building for the time being. You may exit out of any door that is accessible to you at the end of your class or activity. The 2nd floor door to the Mather Center will remain locked until further notice. Registration: All Members are required to pre-register to attend any in person July program or activity. There will be no walk in’s to the Center until further notice. Registration for July in person activities begins Wednesday, June 23 for Darien Members and Wednesday, June 30 for Non-Resident Members. Register by calling the center at 203-656-7490. Check-In: All Members will be required to check in with staff upon entry. Information packet will be provided which includes onetime waiver to be signed by all members. Waivers will be kept on file. Members will also be asked general health questions as they relate to COVID symptoms. Members that exhibit symptoms or feel unwell will be required to leave. JULY DAILY DRIVE-THRU LUNCH PROGRAM Chef Judi is cooking up delicious and nutritious lunches daily at the Mather Center for our Darien Members! Directions: Drive through the Mather Center—stay in your car and meals will be brought to you! Reservations for the following week: Call in Monday- Wednesday the week prior between 8:30-11:30 at (203) 656-7490 to reserve your lunches. Menus: Weekly Menus are located on our webpage: www.darienct.gov or you can give us a call. Pick- Up: promptly at 12:00 Line up begins at 11:45. Cost: $ 5.00 per meal - exact Cash or Checks only (Checks payable to DSP Darien Senior Programs). There is a limit of 4 people at a time in the room and members must be masked and maintain a social distance of at least 6 feet at all times. All projects from the public will be brought in through the back door of the woodshop. Call the Center to sign-up or inquire about dropping off projects: 203-656- 7490. SENIOR CHAIR FITNESS WITH ELIZABETH HALL IN CENTER Thursdays, July 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29, 10:30-11:00am Elizabeth’s 30-minute class incorporates movements for any age, and any level of fitness and requires nothing more than a chair! Class size will be limited to 16 members. Sign- up for July classes begins on Wednesday, June 23 for Darien Residents and Wednesday, June 30 for Non-Resident Members. The class fee is $4.00 per class. Please have exact change or check made out to DSP. COMPUTER ROOM IS OPEN! Monday – Thursday, 12:30-2:00pm The Computer room is open for member’s use by reservation. Members are required to wear masks, maintain social distancing from other users and wipe down all equipment after use. Sanitizing wipes will be available. OIL PAINTING WITH ALTHEA ERICSSON IN CENTER Fridays, July 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30, 9:00-11:00am Althea Erricson will offer her weekly class on oil painting starting in July. Althea attended NY School of Design and Parsons School and will offer individual instruction and guidance to the advanced student. Althea will provide a list of additional materials or equipment that may be needed for the students. There will be a limit of 7 students per class. STAINED GLASS WITH ANDY IN CENTER Fridays, July 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30, 9:30-10:30am The beautiful and delicate craft of stained glass requires patience and imagination. Andy will provide step-by-step guidance to beginners and direction to the more seasoned student. Masking and social distancing required. Class size is limited to 6 students. SENIOR AEROBICS WITH LISA BREHIO–ROBINSON IN CENTER Additional class added! Wednesdays July 7, 14, 21 & 28 11:15-12:00pm AND Fridays, July 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, 11:15-12:00pm This 45 minute aerobics class uses chairs, weights, and bands with fun music of the 50’s and 60’s. There will be a guided warm up and stretching at the end of class. Masks are required and social distancing will be maintained. There is a limit of 16 members per class and you must register to attend. The class fee is $4.00 per class, please have exact change or check made out to DSP. VNA PRESENTS: HYDRATION & YOUR HEALTH IN CENTER Tuesday, July 6, 10:00 – 11:00am Proper hydration is so important to your overall health and your body functioning at optimal levels. Learn what the benefits of adequate hydration and the consequences of dehydration. You might be surprised the difference regular hydration makes! Join us for the VNA’s presentation! Please note social distancing and masks are required to participate. Presentation is limited to 20 members. CHAIR DANCE WITH CLAUDIA IN CENTER Tuesdays, July 6, 13, 20 & 27 at 1:00-2:00pm This class includes stretching, light aerobic exercise, creative dance, and movement choreographed to all genres of music. You will leave this highly motivating class with enhanced posture, renewed energy, and a positive attitude. Social distancing will be maintained and masks are required to participate. Claudia will adjust the class in consideration for mask wearing needs. There is a limited of 16 members for this class. BRAIN TEASERS GOES TO COLLEGE OVER ZOOM Wednesday, July 7, 14, 21, & 28, 10:00-11:00am For the first ½ of July, we’ll be joined by students from Sacred Heart University’s Occupational Therapy program and they will be adding their own special twists to Brain Teasers! Wednesday, July 7, 1:00pm via Zoom Rosie and Gerri Genovese will share some of their latest adventures with us! For those of you who don’t know, Rosie is our favorite pet visitor to DSP! LAUGH OUT LOUD WITH BETH! IN CENTER Thursday, July 8, 10:00am Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh! Laughter strengthens your immune system, boosts mood, diminishes pain, and protects you from the damaging effects of stress. It really is the best medicine so come join us and bring a joke or two if you are so inclined! Chairs will be distanced at 6 feet and masks are required to participate and will be limited to 20 members. Friday, July 9, 1:30pm Sheraton Homecare is back for another round of painting instruction and fun! No experience needed to enjoy this virtual paint party, and Sheraton’s capable art therapist will guide us step by step. Just pick-up your kit, which will include all the materials you need by Thursday, July 8, get comfortable at home, and get painting with us! A $5.00 donation is suggested. TAI CHI WITH KEN DOLAN IN CENTER Mondays, July 12, 19, & 26, 9:00-10:00am Ken’s classes emphasize relaxing with focused breathing and coordinated movement. The slow gentle movement aids in flexibility and balance. The practice of both the breathing and the movement usually relaxes both mind and body. Ken’s class will be limited to 16 students with social distancing and masks required. Ken will adjust the class to accommodate the need to wear masks. The class fee is $4.00 per class. KNITTING AND CROCHETING IN CENTER Mondays, July 12, 19, & 26, 10:00-11:30am You are welcome even if you are a beginner to this wonderful group of crafters. Enjoy the company of fellow knitters and crocheters while working on projects that will benefit the community at large. We donate hats, scarves, gloves to the Darien Human Services Holiday Drive every year. We also make projects that can be sold and given as gifts November through early October. We are also very fortunate to receive beautiful donations of yarn, needles and other equipment throughout the year. There is a limit of 10 members at a time. BALLET FOR SENIORS WITH ELIZABETH HALL IN CENTER Mondays, July 12, 19 & 26, 11:30-12:30pm Did you dance as a child and think it was too late to take ballet as a senior? Guess what? This class is for you! Besides being swept away by beautiful classical movements, you are doing your body and spirit a favor. The balance, strength, and memory you once thought were waning will only get stronger. You can increase all of these while still having fun dancing. Masking and social distancing are still required. ART GOTTLIEB: CHARLES LINDBERGH IN CENTER Tuesday, July 13, 10:00-11:00am In 1927 when he was only 25 years old, Charles Lindbergh’s nonstop flight from New York to Paris was the first to be flown solo, instantaneously turning the young, unfamiliar pilot into a worldwide celebrity. As an officer in the U.S. Army Air Corps Reserve, Lindbergh received the Medal of Honor for his achievement. Join Art and your friends as we head down this historical photo tour. MEET & GREET DONNA OVER ZOOM Wednesday, July 14, 1:00pm via Zoom On May 3rd, Senior Programs welcomed Donna Savage to a brand new position as the Activity Assistant. Donna will be assisting with all aspects of programming in the Center. She will also facilitate some fun programming like BINGO, Sing-a-Longs, and other entertaining activities. VNA BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENING IN CENTER Thursday, July 15, 1:00-2:00pm, by appointment The Visiting Nurse and Hospice of Fairfield County, a member of Waveny Lifecare Network, (VNA) will provide monthly blood pressure and health screenings by a registered nurse. The VNA has served the community for more than 100 years and has one of the oldest hospice programs in Fairfield County, Connecticut. A helpful topic will be discussed briefly then participants may bring up concerns and challenges that they are facing. BINGO! IN CENTER Tuesday, July 27, 10:00am We’re celebrating summer so wear your favorite pastels, bright colors, or floral shirts; bring those sun hats and glasses and let’s have some fun! Don’t forget your dabbers, or you can purchase one for $1.00 at the center. Disposable cards will also be used and scratch off tickets will be awarded to the winners! There is a suggested donation of $2.00 to play and a limit of 20 members. Prizes will be awarded. He began his career on Broadway in the 1920s, which led to Movie parts in 1930s Hollywood. Bogart's turning point came in the 1940s, with his legendary roles in The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, and To Have and Have Not. TOWN OF DARIEN HUMAN SERVICES The Renters’ Rebate Program To be eligible for the program the individual must be at least 65 years old or receiving Social Security Disability if under 65 and been a resident of Connecticut for one year prior to applying. The maximum 2020 income for a single person is $37,600 and for a married couple is $45,800. Applications will be accepted until September 30, 2021.
