WILDLIFE NEWS SPINNEY WOOD Aylesham Parish Council have asked us to help look after Spinney Wood. It’s a fun place to explore with bluebells and woodland birds to spot. Check out the Visit our Sites section below to see how to visit. EYE TO THE SKY Last month a white tailed eagle was spotted flying around Dover. The birds are huge, from one wingtip to the other is about 2m, that’s more than the height of an adult! It’s thought the bird had flown 100 miles from the Isle of Wight to Dover. A buzzard (left) and a sea eagle (right) WATCH YOUR STEP! Did you know that not all birds make nests in trees? Many birds make their nests on the ground. The birds and their eggs are well camouflaged and the parents are good at protecting their nest. But it can still be dangerous and you can help by A meadow pipit nest keeping your dog on a lead so it won’t scare the birds away or step on the nest. WHAT’S THE BUZZ AT FORT BURGOYNE? Fort Burgoyne has some new residents. A local beekeeper has placed some hives with bees at the fort and they’re doing a great job pollinating the lovely wildflowers. Fort Burgoyne
LOVE YOUR PLANET CELEBRATE WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY World Environment Day is on the 5th of June and is celebrated by learning about nature and doing things to help make the planet healthier. This years theme is ecosystem restoration— which means making unhealthy wild spaces healthy again. WHAT CAN YOU DO ON WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY? GO ON A NATURE APPRECIATION WALK Nature is great because it gives us the food we eat and the air we breathe, which is why we need to look after it. There are also lots of fun things nature can give us if we use our imaginations. Go on a nature walk to see if you can find the following. Find something… to climb to play catch with that looks pretty to make into a piece of art to give as a gift to jump over that smells good to make a den with GO ON A LITTER PICK Visit your local wild place and get searching for litter. Use a litter picker or gloves and be careful not to pick up anything dangerous or sharp. If you can separate out recycling such as cans and pop them in your recycling bin at home. If you want to organise a big clean then ask your local council if they can provide equipment and collect the bags of rubbish afterwards. DO SOME GARDENING Do you, or does someone you know, have space for some extra plants? Planting wildlife friendly plants is a great way to help insects like butterflies find enough food. Even a small pot or a window box can make a difference. USE YOUR VOICE Is there something that you think could be changed to help the environment? If so why not write to the person in charge and ask them to change it. Maybe you could ask your local supermarket to put some wildflowers in their car park or ask your school to make your playground better for wildlife.
