What has been happening in school? National Day of Reflection, Tuesday 23rd March On Tuesday 23rd March it was exactly a year since the first lockdown began in 2020. It has been a very challenging year for everyone and we decided to mark this day with a Day of Reflection, organised by the charity Marie Curie. Our focus for the day was spreading a feeling of hope for the future. We observed the minutes’ si- CHRIST lence at 12 noon and lit a candle to remember those who have suffered and reflect CHURCH on the challenges we have all overcome. PRIMARY All the staff at school wore yellow ribbons to form a Beacon of Light as a symbol of SCHOOL hope for the better times ahead, and the children thought about the positive im- pact the vaccine roll out is having on the spread of the virus. Each class created a large candle using different art media and we will put the can- dles together to create a wonderful Beacon of Light display for all the children to see. On the candles, children wrote messages of hope for the future. Love and Hope 4 Picasso took some time on Tuesday to find out about different symbols of hope. We used these to inspire some drawings on wooden discs, which are now hanging on a 'Tree of Hope' in the Nature Area. As well as rainbows, there are hot air balloons and doves. What other symbols can you spot? Palm Sunday What is Palm Sunday? Palm Sunday is a Christian celebration that is held on the Sunday before Easter and will take place on 28 March 2021. It’s marked to celebrate Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, a week before Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection. It’s referred to as ‘Palm Sunday’ as crowds waved palm branches at Jesus during his last entry into Jerusalem before he was crucified. The celebration is movea- CHRIST ble, meaning it doesn’t always take place on the same date every year. Palm Sunday marks CHURCH the beginning of Holy Week and Easter Sunday marks the ending. PRIMARY SCHOOL How do Christians celebrate Palm Sunday? Palm Sunday is celebrated by going to church, Christians also make crosses out of palm leaves to display in their homes. In some churches, they burn the palm leaves and keep the ashes for Ash Wednesday. Christians usually prep the day before and commemorate the day using red and white colours to resemble Jesus’ blood on the cross as he was cruci- fied. But not every country can have Palm leaves due to different climates, as such they THE SPRING TERM 2021 celebrate a little differently. For example India they scatter flowers instead of palm leaves and in Italy, olive branches can be used too. Sewing4Kingston kindly donated some masks to the school.
