OLD GUILDFORD PUBLIC SCHOOL Stage 2 Learning at Home Activity POETRY WRITING: Week 1 Tuesday 28th April 2020 Learning Intention: I am learning to understand how similes are used in poems. Success Criterion: I can find six similes in the poem “A Rainbow”. A simile uses the words "like" or "as" to compare two things which are not alike. In the poem below, teeth are being compared to stars. "Your teeth are like stars; They come out at night. They come back at dawn When they're ready to bite." Read the poem “A Rainbow”. How many similes (using the words “as” or “like”) can you find? Circle them Did you find all of the six similes? Well done!! Check again if you found less than six. This is a simile because it uses the word “as” describe how busy a person is. Success Criterion: I can identify onomatopoeia in the poem “The Noisy Recess”. Onomatopoeia is when a word describes a sound. It mimics the sound of the object or the action it refers to when spoken. For example, the picture below describes the sound a person makes when they sneeze “aachoo”. Read the poem “The Noisy Recess”. How many onomatopoeia words can you find? Success Criterion: I can identify personification in a poem. Personification is used when you give animals, ideas or objects qualities and/or abilities that ONLY a human can have. Here is an example- If I wanted to give STARS human qualities, I could say: The STARS winked at me (stars don’t have EYES so they cannot really wink). Success Criterion: I can use personification to compose a poem. Personification is when an object, idea or animal is given human qualities and abilities. Now try making a poem using personification. Create a poem about the clouds, sky and the sun giving them human characteristics. Fill in the blank lines with a quality or ability. Personification I know the clouds aren’t people, but they are looking glum today. So, I say that they are _________, as I watch the sky turn grey. Now, the sky it not a person, But I feel its raindrop tears. So, I say that it is ___________, and then the sun appears. The sun is not a person, but its warmth spreads like a grin. Success Criterion: I can use language features (such as personification) when composing poems. Task 1: 1. Make a list of 7 action verbs that describe things that humans do. 2. Now, take a look around the room and write down 7 objects that you see. 3. Look at your two lists and find funny or interesting ways to combine the objects with the verbs. For example, you might come up with “pencil laughing” or “sandwich whispers.” Use these word combinations to create poetic sentences about each object. It is common for the poem’s shape to reflect its theme or topic, but it is not a requirement. Here’s a few examples below! Now it’s your turn (by yourself)- NO PARENT HELP PLEASE! Create a Shape poem on a favourite topic. Use some of the poetic language technique/s we have learnt this term (similes, metaphors, rhyme, onomatopoeia or personification).
