Outlook ● School target ● The path to the title of Doctor – Formation – Research ● Funds ● Tutoring ● Working Space ● Organization of the school and contacts 21/10/19 Riunione Collegio Docenti Dottorato in Fisica 2
The target of this School ● Main aim : – formation of researchers, able to propose, pursue and complete an original research program on world-class, state- of-the-art topics in several Physics fields ● … but also : – develop skills to be spent outside Academia ● face intellectual challenges ● problem solving ● communication, dissemination ● group-work ● programming experience ● statistics and Data analysis ● budget management 21/10/19 Riunione Collegio Docenti Dottorato in Fisica 3
Path to achieve the title ● Three years program, during which the student will – pursue her/his academic education – perform fronteer research under the supervision of an experienced scientist – describe the results of her/his work in a thesis subject to multi-steps review – defend the thesis in front of a board of experts. 21/10/19 Riunione Collegio Docenti Dottorato in Fisica 4
Education ● Accomplished through attendance to – front lectures in the School – seminars offered by the DFA – attendance to school, workshops, conferences, etc. 21/10/19 Riunione Collegio Docenti Dottorato in Fisica 5
Front Lectures ● The school this year offers 20 courses, out of which – 18 Physics courses, devoted to state-of-art topics in Astrophysics, Cosmology, HEP, Matter, Nuclear, Statistics, Data Analysis and Instrumentation technicques. Each of them corresponds to three credits (24 h front lectures), held by at most three different teachers. – 2 soft skills courses, aimed at improving the student capabilities in teaching, fund raising, self- promotion, communication, etc. They both correspond to about 1.5 credit. ● The list of the courses can be found at this URL ● A brief overview of all the courses will follow this presentation. 21/10/19 Riunione Collegio Docenti Dottorato in Fisica 6
Exams ● Students are free to follow the courses they prefer ● Students are expected to – pass the exams of at least four Physics courses by the end of the second year (Sept 2021) – out of these, at least three by the end of the first year (Sept 2020) – obtain the idoneity from at least one soft skill course by the end of the second year ● To pass exams and to obtain idoneity attendance to the lectures is mandatory ● Remote connection must be agreed with the teacher 21/10/19 Riunione Collegio Docenti Dottorato in Fisica 7
Substitution ● The school provides a very wide education offer, yet not exaustive ● We encourage students to follow also internal courses not directly related to their research activity, however … ● … students are allowed to substitute at most two Physics courses with lectures taken from – other PhD school in Padova or abroad – University lectures (Physics, Statistics, Maths, etc.) – lectures from Schools ● Soft skill courses cannot be replaced 21/10/19 Riunione Collegio Docenti Dottorato in Fisica 8
Conditions for replacement 1) The request is well motivated and approved by the student’s supervisor 2) The replacement is at least as demanding as the internal courses: - true course (not a set of seminars) consisting in at least three credits - validated by a final exam - subject to the same restriction as the internal courses ● The student must present the replacement request with proper advance and with due documentation to the coordinator ● The request is then subject to the approval of the school Advisory Boards, either the Consiglio Direttivo or the Collegio dei Docenti 21/10/19 Riunione Collegio Docenti Dottorato in Fisica 9
Schools ● Several schools for PhD students are activated worldwide each year ● We encourge students to attend at least one school focused on their preferred research topics ● Funds to attend the school can be either provided – by each student research budget – by the supervisor budget – by the school allowance – ... 21/10/19 Riunione Collegio Docenti Dottorato in Fisica 10
Research ● Research is the main activity of the student ● The academic burden is significant in the first year, then it steeply decreases ● The third year is devoted only to research ● Students are assigned a supervisorwho will tutor them all along their path to the thesis ● Usually students are embedded in a research team, often in collaborations with other institutions, labs, etc. ● We support students in spreading their achievement by means of publications, report to conferences or workshops, etc. ● Several facilities (labs, computing power) are provided by DFA and INFN to support the student’s research 21/10/19 Riunione Collegio Docenti Dottorato in Fisica 11
Admssion to the Next Year ● Admission to the next year is due about Sept. 15th , subject to the approval of the Consiglio Direttivo ● For this purpose student must: – complete by that time their academic duties (exams, schools) – obtain the written approval of their supervisor – provide a brief presentation of their activity 21/10/19 Riunione Collegio Docenti Dottorato in Fisica 12
Thesis ● The thesis marks the completion of the program ● It is evaluated through several steps: – approved by the supervisor – submitted to the judgement of two independent readers who, within 30 days, might either ● accept 21/10/19 Riunione Collegio Docenti Dottorato in Fisica 13
Thesis ● The thesis marks the completion of the program ● It is evaluated through several steps: – approved by the supervisor – submitted to the judgement of two independent readers who, within 30 days, might either ● accept ● ask minor revision Apply the suggested corrections, get the supervisor blessing and proceed further ( no other interaction with the readers) 21/10/19 Riunione Collegio Docenti Dottorato in Fisica 14
Thesis ● The thesis marks the completion of the program ● It is evaluated through several steps: – approved by the supervisor – submitted to the judgement of two independent readers who, within 30 days, might either ● accept ● ask minor revision ● ask major revision Have six more months to apply the corrections, then go through all the approval process again ( implies another interaction with the readers) 21/10/19 Riunione Collegio Docenti Dottorato in Fisica 15
Thesis ● The thesis marks the completion of the program ● It is evaluated through several steps: – approved by the supervisor – submitted to the judgement of two independent readers who, within 30 days, might either ● accept ● ask minor revision ● ask major revision ● Finally it’s defended in front of a Board of 3 – 5 experts ● In exceptional cases the Board might approve “cum laude” 21/10/19 Riunione Collegio Docenti Dottorato in Fisica 16
Doctor Europaeus ● Student can apply to this honorific title provided that: – they spent at least three months of research in a Lab or institution outside Italy – the two readers are professors in two Universities from two different UE countries, and different from Italy as well (Labs are not included, sorry) – at least one member of the Board comes from an UE country different from Italy – at least part of the discussion is held in UE language different from italian. 21/10/19 Riunione Collegio Docenti Dottorato in Fisica 17
Suspension ● Due to health problems, parental leave, or other seriuos reasons, students can require a suspension, during which – the pay of the allowance is suspended – the conclusion of the PhD program is delayed ● The request must be well documented and is subject to the approval of the Consiglio Direttivo, which will forward its decision to the University Board (Ufficio Formazione e Ricerca). 21/10/19 Riunione Collegio Docenti Dottorato in Fisica 18
