Sports Class Application Process 2018 “Attitude is Everything.” “Individual commitment to a group effort; that’s what makes a team work, a company work, a society work and a civilisation work.” Vincent T. Lombardi
The Sports Class-What is it? In 2018 Northcross Intermediate will again be offering the Sports Class as an option for Y8 students. This will be the 14th year that the class has been in operation. The Sports Class is a different style of learning aimed at the interests of our many enthusiastic sporting students. The Sports Class basically works like any other class in the school, except the curriculum is delivered using sport, physical education, sports science, fitness, health and other related areas as the learning contexts. One fact that must be emphasised is: All curriculum subjects are still taught and the classroom programme follows the concept based Integrated Curriculum using the NZ Curriculum Framework, National Standards and its learning outcomes and objectives. The only difference is that the learning contexts are related to sport, physical education and other related areas where possible. The class started on a two year trial basis and feedback from both students and parents for the past thirteen years has been extremely positive and encouraging. The most encouraging aspect from my point of view is the improvement in student achievement. The class is usually (not always) an even split of girls and boys. For example, 16 boys and 16 girls. One of the undoubted highlights of the year is attending Sports Camp. This is the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Winter Olympics at Totara Springs in Matamata. In the past eight years we have competed successfully, winning the Overall Title in 2008, Runner Up in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 3rd in 2010 and 2014. The kids always look forward to this week on the calendar! 2006/7 saw the introduction of a new major event on our sporting calendar. Our students now have the opportunity to represent our school in the NZCT NZ AIMS National Sports Championships in Term 3 at Tauranga. Many students from the Sports Class have been involved in this event and we have had unanimous feedback that it is an extremely challenging and exciting experience. Selection of Students The students need to be entering Y8 and are selected by myself with input from Senior Management. I do a lot of observation of Y7 sport during the year and my coaching all year round gives me good insight into which students are standing out or showing potential. I am also involved and help organise and run a lot of our major sports events at NX (Lunchtime Sport, Cross Country and Athletics) so that also helps in the identification of students. Along with the testing days and communication with coaches and teachers, I feel that every step possible is taken to ensure a fair selection process. It is important to realise that while great care and consideration is taken when deciding final selections, if they are at a premium and we are having difficulty choosing final places, then it will be at the discretion of the school when making these decisions. This means that, unfortunately, some students will miss out and that is something that is inevitable. I believe this is something that should be discussed with your child. The selection process is an on-going one. It starts the day the Y7 students enter Northcross and stops when we make final selections late in Term 4. This ongoing selection process gives both students and parents an idea of the time and effort that goes into the selection process. Programme Content The programme content includes: Learning ‘how’ to learn Taking responsibility for your own learning Developing Independence Nutrition/Hydration The Energy Systems Elements of Fitness Correct Warm Up/Cool Down Dynamic/Static Stretching Recovery Term and Weekly Goal Setting Training Methods Biomechanics Anatomy/Physiology Leadership Pre/During and Post Training/Competition Routines Mental Strength Training Values ‘Real’ Teamwork
Prior to Applying To assist in ensuring this type of class is the right place for you and is going to be beneficial, I ask that you have a look at the following criteria and guidelines before applying. However, in saying that, do not have the attitude that ‘Oh, I won’t get in’. Have a go! You’ll never know unless you try. Don’t let the fear of failure stop you; otherwise you will never try out for anything and you’ll be forever wondering ‘what if’. The disappointment in not being selected will be short-lived and there are plenty of other opportunities at Northcross you can become involved in, regardless of whether or not you are in the Sports Class! 1. Students should have ability in a wide range of sports, although it will be at the school’s discretion as to whether we select students who are at a high level in individual sports. 2. Any Y7 student may apply (except Independent Learning Class-ILC.) 3. Students will have to pay for additional costs for Sports Camp at the end of Term 2 in 2018. Last year’s cost was $400. There are also other costs involved, but I try to keep these to a minimum without detracting from the trips, visitors and so forth that make the Sports Class Programme what it is. 4. Students must fill out the attached sheets that list what sports they were involved in for their Y7 year only at Northcross. The same goes for what sports are done outside of school hours-Y7 only and whether you have achieved Representative honours in any sports in Y7 also. Other positions of leadership and responsibility should also be included. The more information you give me the easier it is for me. PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO FILL IN THE GOOGLE FORM CORRECTLY, WITH THE RELEVANT INFORMATION. SOME STUDENTS HAVE NOT COMPLETED THESE IN THE PAST AND IT HAS HINDERED THEIR APPLICATION. 5. Students must be able to attend one of the Fitness Testing Days also in Term 4. (See dates below.) 6. Students will be notified of their selection into the Sports Class via letter on the last day of Term 4. 7. On the Google Form it is vital that all personal details are current, up to date and accurate. Cellphone numbers and Email addresses all need to be current, up to date and accurate. 8. CV/Resume to be included with Application Forms. Please follow instructions on the information sheet that is attached. Timelines and Dates are below. 9. A DESIRE TO BECOME AN INDEPENDENT LEARNER AND RAISE YOUR OWN STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT IS A MUST! Your attitude should be reflecting this in your current classroom!
