Welcome to the Pamlico Rose Year in Review 2018 December 12, 2018 The staff and Board of Directors of Pamlico Rose are taking a breath as the last days of 2018 wind down. As we reflect on the progress made this past year, we’d like to take a moment to offer our supporters a quick review of the activities and events that helped advance our mission to serve at-risk Veterans and promote historic preservation. Rose Haven Center of Healing Naturally, continuing work on the Rose Haven Center of Healing, rehabilitating the historic infrastructure and building the healing gardens have taken top priority. We’re grateful and excited that local construction company WIMCO has joined our team to help us push this important project across the finish line. We also want to sincerely thank the many volunteers and businesses that gave funds, time, or both to help us make progress on Rose Haven this year. All funds raised during 2018 went directly to the rehabilitation and construction at Rose Haven. We put on a new metal roof and it looks amazing!
The interior of the house needed a bit more stabilization after gutting it before undertaking further renovation. In the early days of 2019, we expect to achieve a fully stabilized structure, paving the way for a flurry of projects: electrical, plumbing, insulation, and more. The barn was emptied during WIMCO’s work day in August. After much work on reinforcing the many tresses, the next step will be excavating the dirt floor and laying a concrete foundation, hopefully in January. Much work has been done in the healing gardens. Several elements of the hardscape have already been built and many more planned, including walkways, a council ring, and a bioretention area. This work will continue into the New Year in anticipation of construction of the raised beds for spring planting in the produce garden, a path for the ADA parking slot (thanks to New Beginning Funeral Home for the use of the parking lot adjacent to Rose Haven!), and designs for components of the gardens’ softscape, such as a Japanese Meditation Garden near the “Tree of Life”. A Garden Party was held in November celebrating progress made on the healing gardens. Members of the Beaufort County Chamber Orchestra entertained the audience under our Japanese Maple. People were able to take a tour of the gardens and the advancements made in the house.
Raising Awareness Raising awareness of female and other Veteran population issues and offering activities and events to help promote healing and recovery was also a priority for 2018. Along with other nonprofits and the Turnage Theatre, Pamlico Rose sponsored speaker Holly Dunn, author of the book Sole Survivor, in an April presentation on healing from sexual assault. A video recording of the talk is available for others to watch on our YouTube channel. The 1st annual Healing Vets Weekend (HVW) and the bicycle Ride for Rose Haven: Supporting Women Veterans (RFRH) featured three days of events highlighting healing strategies such as art, yoga, and riding, a benefit concert, and a series of TED-like VET Talks – IBX. An individual grant made it possible to videotape the talks, accessible here. A partnership with Arts of the Pamlico, sponsorships, grants, and local organizations helped fund HVW/RFRH. The RFRH netted $6000 to help Rose Haven. Robert Greene Sands, our CEO, and other Pamlico Rose staff volunteered time and expenses to attend several symposia and conferences across the state and to present our mission locally and around eastern North Carolina. Other 2018 highlights include: • Robert Greene Sands was asked to serve on the board of East Carolina Veteran Coalition (ECVC). • Pamlico Rose and Arts of the Pamlico were awarded a grant to start a military Veteran art program in 2019.
A key awareness event will occur in February of 2019 when Pamlico Rose, along with ECVC and North Carolina Works, will sponsor a “Stand Down” for Beaufort County Veterans to help with the needs of homeless and at-risk Veterans. Plans for 2019 We plan to complete the Rose Haven Center of Healing in 2019 and kickoff our first round of innovative programs designed to better help female Veterans reintegrate into communities. We also hope many local Veterans will find the Healing Gardens a place to come and visit and maybe even volunteer to help sustain its development. The 2nd Annual HVW and RFRH Healing is set for May 3rd and 4th. In addition, Pamlico Rose will continue its outreach and efforts to raise awareness of Veteran issues locally and nationally. Like any nonprofit, we are always on the lookout for opportunities to apply for grants and other institutional means to help our mission. We are diligent in our quest, and as we close out 2018, we are in the throes of several grant applications. To Those Who Have Supported Us And finally, with heartfelt gratitude we thank all the individuals, businesses, and organizations who supported Pamlico Rose in 2018. A registry of donors and donations can be accessed on our sponsorship webpage. We would especially like to thank WIMCO for their partnership and contributions of labor and materials, for providing us with expertise on all facets of rehabilitation, and for connecting us to companies like Old Castle/Adams Products, RPA, BE Singleton, S&T Container and Trailer Rentals, Sorrell Land Surveying, K&d Logistics, LLC, and other organizations and personnel critical to our success. Our progress in 2018 would not have been possible without their support. Of special mention is the October fundraiser that was sponsored by Urban Set Bride in Richmond, VA. Over $3500 dollars was raised for Rose Haven on a wedding dress raffle and social. Our progress in 2018 would not have been possible without all of our supporters.
