6 WHANGAREI LEADER, MARCH 11, 2020 neighbourly.co.nz OUT & ABOUT Andrea and Carleen Still (pictured with Suki the rescue dog) celebrate the success of an Afternoon of Country Music at Kamo Club, which ‘‘Thank you so much to Carleen and Jan, all of the amazing artists, sponsors, volunteers and everyone who came along and helped raise the money for the animals.’’ Mum Danielle and her two girls Lexi, 7, and Jorja, 9, were among the students at Whangarei Primary School to receive bikes and helmets from the Bikes for Kids programme of Variety – the Children’s Charity. And they’ve got a fancy foxtrot and wow waltz to thank. Well, more specifically the bikes are due to the footwork of Newshub anchor Mike McRoberts who took part in last year’s Dancing with the Stars, where he successfully raised more than $40,000 for Variety, which funded 170 bikes and helmets. Every year, Variety raises funds for its Bikes for Kids programme to benefit kids who are nominated by people in their community – such as teachers who may select a student for their commendable efforts throughout the year. Variety chief executive Lorraine Taylor said: “For many Kiwi kids, riding or owning a bike is a rite of passage, and part of a normal and happy childhood.” McRoberts said: “It’s the opportunity for these children to have a bike, and to have that active, sporting sensation of riding around on a bike, the independence that comes with it, the sense of confidence. It’s just fantastic - Teaching that you see the look on their faces when they get their bike and put their helmets on and they’re ready to go - what a great start for them," he added. changes lives Meet the Pukenui Western Hills Forest Trust’s newest arrival.
