Statistician-General, Risenga Malule- ke, released the Mortality and causes of death in South Africa, 2016: Findings from death notification this week. The total number of deaths in 2016, 405 370 or 88,8% were due to natural causes and 51 242 or 11,2% were attributed to non-natural causes. The mortality and causes of death 2016 shows that overall mortality continues to decline in the country as has been a trend since 2007. “In 2016, there were 456 612 deaths registered, 52,7% were male and 47,3% were female. The sex ratio at death was 112 male deaths per 100 female deaths. The deaths due to non-natural caus- es were higher for males compared to females, with the proportions particu- larly high for males aged 20–24 years (66,1%). “Assault was the leading non-natural cause of death for males and transport accidents were at the forefront for fe- males. The results showed that deaths peak as people progresses into old age as indicated amongst males of 60−64 years and females 75−79 years. Howev- er, females with an average age at death of 62 years outlived males (52,7 years),” said Maluleke. The pattern observed along with the decline in deaths is that South Africa is undergoing a change with deaths shifting from being more likely to come from com- municable diseases such as tuberculo- sis, diarrhoea, and pneumonia to deaths characterised by non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, stroke, and hypertension. Accordingly, more deaths occurred from non-communicable dis- eases (57.4%) relative to communicable diseases (31,3%). Mpumalanga had the highest propor- tion of tuberculosis deaths (8,0%), than the national average followed by Eastern Cape (7,9%), North West (7,4%) and Northern Cape (6,8%). Other forms of heart disease and cerebrovascular dis- eases both ranked third place at 5,1% each. The majority of male deaths (7,6%) was attributed to tuberculosis, while most female deaths (7,2%) were due to diabe- tes. For females, tuberculosis was ranked fifth in 2016, and diabetes was sixth amongst males. HIV-related diseases were the third leading cause of death for
