WSCRCA Youth Outdoor Soccer Hey Parents! Want a week of free fun? We are looking for product testers for a social, physical, emotional, and cognitive development family board game for children ages 3-6. By the time you read this, we will have ‘hopefully’ kicked off our 2021 soccer season! The article was submitted while we are still finalizing many details that are normally completed by now. COVID continues to keep us on our toes, however, WSCRCA is determined to create a safe Learn more program for our members. www.thespecbox.com Some changes you might see this year from the past include, mixed uniforms for some teams, challenges honoring friend requests due to balancing volunteers, and the addition of a new Cougar Ridge field. Unfortunately, there was no update on the U10 league at the newsletter deadline. Things we are doing to keep everyone safe include masking rules, physical distancing, smaller cohorts, game limitations, fields spacing, spectator caps, and the continuation of our coach police checks. This year we replaced our old and heavy full metal frame U8 and U10 nets with composite, quick setup goals. I wanted to thank everyone that signed up to volunteer. Without you our program could not run. WSCRCA soccer is 100% volunteer run, including the organizers. We had close to 320 parent volunteer sign-ups, which is amazing. We are evaluating the use of our volunteer sign-up tool for next year. This was our first full year using SignUp.com (we used it last year, but the season was cancelled). There were a few growing pains, and some excel wizardry behinds the scenes to cleanse the data (thanks Paul and Eileen!). Let us enjoy being outdoors again, doing it safety, and always being courteous to one another. We want to hear from you if we can do anything better! Email us at soccer@wscr.ca. Myths and misunderstanding further enforce the silence. By getting to know the realities of depression, we can better help and support those who are experiencing it. Becoming educated about depression demonstrates to those that are suffering that we care. How to best help a friend or loved one: Being a compassionate listener is much more important than giving advice. You don’t have to try to “fix” the person; you just have to be a good listener. Encourage the depressed person to talk about their feelings and be willing to listen without judgement. Don’t expect a single conversation to be the end of it. Depressed people tend to withdraw from others and isolate themselves. You may need to express your concern and willingness to listen over and over again. Be gentle, yet persistent.
