Service for the Lord’s Day As the music begins, let us use this time for quiet reflection and prayer, so that we, individually and as a great crowd of witnesses, may prepare ourselves to reaffirm our faith as the people of God. ~ Gathering for God’s Word ~ PRELUDE “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” arr. You call us to seek justice and peace, but we are satisfied with injustice and discord. You call us to bring liberty to the oppressed, but we do not insist on freedom for all. Forgive us, Oh Lord. Turn us to your will by the power of your Spirit, so that all may know your justice and peace; 2
through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Savior. ASSURANCE OF PARDON L: Hear the good news! As a people born of water and the Spirit we have died to the old life, and a new life has begun. SCRIPTURE READING Psalm 107:1-3, 23-32 Brian Tobin 23Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the mighty waters; 24they saw the deeds of the LORD, his wondrous works in the deep. 25For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea. 26They mounted up to heaven, they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their calamity; 27they reeled and staggered like drunkards, and were at their wits’ end. 28Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out from their distress; 29he made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. 30Then they were glad because they had quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven. 31Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind. 32Let them extol him in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders. SCRIPTURE READING Mark 4:35-41 Rev. Ed Zumwinkel 35On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side. 36And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. 37A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. 38But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. 40He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” SERMON Rev. Ed Zumwinkel HYMN #815 “Give to the Winds Thy Fears” FESTAL SONG (see music at the end of bulletin) ~ Responding to God’s Word ~ PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION L: In the communion of the Holy Spirit, we call on the name of the Lord, saying: By your Spirit, O God, P: Transform our lives. 4
L: We pray for the church . . . In the love of Christ, open our hearts to find joy in sorrow, richness in poverty, and new life, even in the dust of death. By your Spirit, O God, P: Transform our lives. L: We pray for the world . . . Give us the courage to confront our enemies not with mighty weapons of war, but with confidence in your will. By your Spirit, O God, P: Transform our lives. OFFERING INVITATION L: Do good and share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. OFFERTORY “When You Pass Through the Waters” Paul D. Weber Sean Stewart, solo Fear not, fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire, you shall not be burned; and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, I am the Lord your God, the Holy One, your Savior. PRAYER OF DEDICATION L: Jesus teaches us that a house divided cannot stand. Together, we offer ourselves and our gifts, that they may be used to extend God’s grace to others as we build God’s kingdom here on earth. And in anticipation of that kingdom, we pray together as one church, as Jesus taught us saying: 5
THE LORD’S PRAYER P: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. CHARGE L: Have unity of spirit, sympathy, love for one another, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Do not repay evil for evil or abuse for abuse; but repay with a blessing. It is for this that you were called – that you might inherit a blessing. P: Thanks be to God. ~ Sending ~ INVITATION TO THE LIFE OF FAITH POSTLUDE “When We Are Living” arr John Carter JeeHye Lee, piano As you rest in the postlude, our final offering to God, you are invited to use this time to reflect on how you have met God here today and how you will bring God’s love into the world that awaits. BENEDICTION L: May the God of peace make you holy in every way and keep your whole being – spirit, soul, and body – free from every fault at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. P: Alleluia! 6

A Note from Environmental Stewardship: Bee Informed / Bee Kind Pollinator Week June 21-27 St. Louis hosts nearly 45 percent of the bee diversity in the state (not what you expect)! Many bees can live their entire lives in an area the size of an average city yard, provided there is a diversity of flowers. This fact makes this a global conservation issue where one person can make a difference. Garden partners for pollinators: Tomato or pepper - native partner: foxglove, beardtongue, leadplant, or pale purple coneflower Cucumbers, squashes - native thistles, sunflowers wild bergamot Information from Missouri Conservationist, Feb. 2020 Part-Time Teacher’s Aide Needed The Webster Groves Presbyterian Church ECC is looking for a part-time teacher’s aide in the Little Learners classroom (ages 1-3). All are welcome! Marlene says, “I offer yoga classes to quiet your mind, strengthen your body, and renew your spirit. Yoga is a holistic approach to a healthy life - physical, mental, and spiritual. I will offer a 45-minute gentle yoga class for four weeks this August and will adapt the poses based on your needs. I look forward to our time together.” Masks in Worship On Tuesday, June 1, the session-appointed Re-opening Task Force assessed the practice of wearing masks in Sunday morning worship. They determined that "In accordance with the new CDC guidelines and the much lower incidence of COVID-19 cases in St. Louis County, masks are encouraged, but will no longer be required for fully vaccinated individuals to attend worship." Although not completely over, this is a great new phase of recovery from the pandemic! However, as a loving church community, we still ask those who are not fully vaccinated to wear a mask to protect those around you. There are a few good reasons for this. For example, the vaccine for children is not yet available and we do not want to possibly expose them to catching the virus from those who are not vaccinated. Also, there are people who are immunocompromised. Certain health treatments, diseases or conditions can cause one to be immunocompromised. One example is from cancer treatments like chemotherapy or radiation. Members of our church who are immunocompromised could be at risk from those carrying the virus who are not fully vaccinated. So those who are not fully vaccinated are asked to continue wearing a mask per CDC guidelines. Be aware that you will continue to see people wearing masks. Some of our members care for children and grandchildren and may want to take extra precautions. Some of the aforementioned immunocompromised may also want to wear a mask to protect themselves. Some folks are still not at ease with the new guidelines or may not be able to be vaccinated. When the flu season returns, many may opt to put masks back on in order to avoid it. So masks won't disappear. Masked or unmasked, we are all children of God negotiating through a difficult and complex time with no perfect solutions. Nevertheless, we are in a much better place than a year ago, and our service to God has been steadfast thanks to the cooperation of all of you! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to give me a call. Peace and good health! Pastor Ed 12
