PRELUDE

                           The Court Is Called To Order

P: Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for your presence here tonight. Your community
   and church thanks you for your willingness to serve on the jury. You are asked to
   think critically and to be impartial as you are presented evidence and arguments
   by the prosecution and defense. Before you can be certified formally as a jury, we
   must swear you in. Please raise your right hand and repeat after me:
C: I solemnly pledge to fulfill and uphold all the duties of a juror faithfully and
   objectively, and I do so with no reservations.
P: Upon this your solemn pledge, I now impanel you as the jury in this case. Ladies
   and gentlemen of the jury, tonight Pontius Pilate stands accused of obstruction of
   justice. Though he was merely a puppet ruler in Judea doing the will of the
   Emperor, Pilate, when faced with the case of Jesus of Nazareth, chose to let the
   Jewish leaders execute Jesus even though he had come to the conclusion that
   Jesus was innocent of any crime. Pilate chose to preserve himself, rather than
   carry out his duty to do what was just. He was a coward in the face of blatant lies
   and injustice. I know that you will come to the obvious conclusion that the man on
   trial here tonight should be convicted.

HYMN “In the Cross of Christ I Glory” LSB 427
In the cross of Christ I glory, Tow’ring o’er the wrecks of time.
All the light of sacred story Gathers round its head sublime.

When the woes of life o’ertake me, Hopes deceive, and fears annoy,
Never shall the cross forsake me; Lo, it glows with peace and joy.

When the sun of bliss is beaming Light and love upon my way,
From the cross the radiance streaming Adds more luster to the day.

Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure By the cross are sanctified;
Peace is there that knows no measure, Joys that through all time abide.

INVOCATION (based on Isaiah 53:7-8,9-10))
P: In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.

                                          3
P: He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth;
C: Like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep before its shearers is
   silent, so he opened not his mouth.
P: By oppression and judgment he was taken away …
C: Although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth …
P: When his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall
   prolong his days;
C: The will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.

APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus
Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of
the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was
buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He
ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy
Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of
sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS
P: You are the Way, the Truth and the Life, O Lord, but so often we forget that and we
   stand in the way of your Truth. Help us to claim you as our King, not hiding your
   presence from others or washing our hands of our association with you. Give us
   the grace to announce to the world that you are truly the sinless Son of God who
   took on our sins that we might be saved. We who once were guilty are now made
   innocent by your blood. Let your righteousness reign in our hearts and lives
   forever.
C: Amen.

                        T SERVICE OF THE WORD T

FIRST READING John 14:1-7
1
 [Jesus said:] “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2In
my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go
to prepare a place for you? 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again
and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4And you know the
way to where I am going.” 5Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you
are going. How can we know the way?” 6Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the
truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7If you had known
me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have
seen him.”
                                           4
P: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: (spoken) Thanks be to God.

THE READING OF THE CHARGES John 18:28-38
28
  Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters. It
was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor’s headquarters, so
that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover. 29So Pilate went outside to
them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” 30They answered
him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.”
31
  Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” The
Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.” 32This was to fulfill
the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to
die.33So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are
you the King of the Jews?” 34Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord,
or did others say it to you about me?” 35Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own
nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?”
36
  Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this
world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the
Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” 37Then Pilate said to him, “So you are
a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and
for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone
who is of the truth listens to my voice.” 38Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he
had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: (spoken) Thanks be to God.

HYMN “My Faith Looks Up to Thee” LSB 702
My faith looks up to Thee, Thou Lamb of Calvary, Savior divine.
Now hear me while I pray; Take all my guilt away;
O let me from this day Be wholly Thine!

May Thy rich grace impart Strength to my fainting heart; My zeal inspire!
As Thou hast died for me, Oh, may my love to Thee
Pure, warm, and changeless be, A living fire!

While life’s dark maze I tread And griefs around me spread, Be Thou my guide;
Bid darkness turn to day, Wipe sorrow’s tears away,
Nor let me ever stray From Thee aside.

                                            5
When ends life’s transient dream, When death’s cold, sullen stream
Shall o’er me roll,
Blest Savior, then, in love, Fear and distrust remove;
O bear me safe above, A ransomed soul!

THE PROSECUTION: ORAL ARGUMENTS

HYMN “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” LSB 425
When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of Glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss And pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast Save in the death of Christ, my God;
All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood.

See, from His head, His hands, His feet Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were a tribute far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all!

THE DEFENSE: ORAL ARGUMENTS

CONFESSION OF SINS
P: Let us confess our sins to God and ask his forgiveness.
C: Almighty God, we have sinned against you in our thoughts, words and
   actions. We have obstructed justice, turning away from your Word and will.
   We have sought truth apart from Jesus, who is the Truth. He is our King, but
   we have turned from his lordship to rule our own lives. Have mercy on us,
   forgive us and bring us to everlasting life. Amen.

THE VERDICT IS RENDERED
P: People of God, hear these words: It is for your sins that Jesus stood before Pilate
   and allowed himself to be convicted, sent to the slaughter like an innocent lamb.
   He suffered the penalty of death in your place and rose in triumph from the dead.
   In Jesus’ name, I render this verdict: You have been declared not guilty. You have
   been forgiven for the sake of Jesus. He has taken your punishment upon himself.
   Jesus has fulfilled all righteousness that you might be set free. I announce to you
   that your sins are forgiven in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the
   Holy Spirit. Amen.

                                          6
OFFERING + Duet “I Am His And He Is Mine” (W. Robinson, J. Mountain, arr. O. Young)
Loved with everlasting love, Led by grace that love to know;
Spirit, breathing from above, Thou hast taught me it is so!
Oh, this full and perfect peace! Oh, this transport all divine!
In a love which cannot cease, I am His, and He is mine.

His forever, only His; Who the Lord and me shall part?
Ah, with what a rest of bliss Christ can fill the loving heart!
Heav’n and earth may fade and flee, First-born light in gloom decline;
But while God and I shall be, I am His, and He is mine.

PRAYERS
P: Lord God, often our hearts are glazed over and hardened by grief;
C: We wonder, in our pain, if we can trust you or not.
P: We even wonder if you are our enemy.
C: Help us to take a long look at the gracious hand you extend to us in the name
   of Jesus.
P: Lead us by your Spirit to faith instead of despair.
C: Help us to see that the hands extended to us are scarred by pain and marked
   by nails.
P: Help us to accept the comfort of your love.
C: Help us to listen to your Word so that we can offer, in turn, your Word of
   comfort to others.
P: We trust your words of forgiveness, knowing that you always hear and answer our
   repentant prayers.
C: We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER
P: Lord remember us in Your Kingdom, and teach us to pray:
C: Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,
   Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;
   and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and
   lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom
   and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

LUTHER’S EVENING PRAYER
I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You
have graciously kept me this day; and I pray that You would forgive me all my
sins where I have done wrong, and graciously keep me this night. For into Your
hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel
be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.

                                             7
BENEDICTION (Isaiah 42:1,4; 2 Corinthians 13:14)
P: Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights;
C: I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations …
P: He will not grow faint or be discouraged
C: Till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law.
P: The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the
   Holy Spirit be with you all.
C: Amen.

CLOSING HYMN “The Day Thou Gavest” LSB 886
The day Thou gavest, Lord, is ended, The darkness falls at Thy behest;
To Thee our morning hymns ascended, Thy praise shall sanctify our rest.

We thank Thee that Thy Church, unsleeping While earth rolls onward into light,
Through all the world her watch is keeping, And never rests by day or night.

As o’er each continent and island The dawn leads on another day,
The voice of prayer is never silent, Nor dies the strain of praise away.

The sun, that bids us rest, is waking Thy saints beneath the western skies,
And hour by hour, as day is breaking, Fresh hymns of thankful praise arise.

So be it, Lord! Thy throne shall never, Like earth’s proud empires, pass away;
Thy kingdom stands and grows forever, Till all Thy creatures own Thy sway.

CONVICTED! We are excited to announce an amazing series of Wednesday
evening messages and liturgies that will enable our congregation to step into
a courtroom for Ash Wednesday and the following five weeks of Lent. Seven
actual CTK attorneys will serve as prosecutors, putting a different biblical
person on trial, accused of an actual crime. Our pastors will be the defense
attorneys and the congregation will be the jury. A light soup supper will be
served at 6pm in the Fellowship Hall and the service begins at 7pm in the
Sanctuary. Everyone is welcomed and encouraged to come!
