Candlelight Service of Lessons and Carols St. Luke’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Park Ridge, Illinois 82nd annual Candlelight Service of Lessons and Carols December 12, 2021 ~ 4:00 p.m. Welcome Prelude Wake, Awake, for Night is Flying German chorale, arr. Ron Mallory Celebration Ringers What Child Is This English folk tune, arr. Peter Crisafulli Michele Harbeck Haley, flute The First Noel English carol, arr. Rick Walters Jim Cross, trumpet Gathering Prayer In Advent darkness we wait for you O Christ. And in our waiting you gift us with music that sings your salvation story. We thank you for Isaiah and the prophets who proclaimed the hope of the Messiah and praise you for Luke and John, evangelists who beheld the coming of Christ. We thank you for Mary’s faithfulness and Joseph’s quiet patience; we praise you for Mary’s song of hope, for the angels’ song of peace. Come, Lord Jesus. Bring peace on the wings of your promise. Bring joy on the winds of the Spirit. Be pleased to dwell with us as our Emmanuel. Speak to us anew through prophecy and Gospel, through poets and musicians – the artisans of your grace. Enlighten the darkness of our world with the Light of your Christ. Come into our hearts Lord Jesus. For we pray in the name of Jesus the Christ, the light of the world. Amen. 2 www.stlukespr.org
Sunday, December 12, 2021 Gathering Song Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence arr. Robert Hobby Youth Ensemble Let all mortal flesh keep silence, and with fear and trembling stand; ponder nothing earthly-minded, for with blessing in his hand Christ our God to earth descending comes full homage to demand. King of kings, yet born of Mary, as of old on earth he stood, Lord of lords in human vesture, in the body and the blood, he will give to all the faithful his own self for heav'nly food. Rank on rank the host of heaven spreads its vanguard on the way; as the Light of light, descending from the realms of endless day, comes, the pow'rs of hell to vanquish, as the darkness clears away. First Reading Isaiah 9:2-4, 6 Jodi Slattery 2The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness — on them light has shined. 3You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. 4For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. 6For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. The reading concludes: The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 205 N. Prospect Ave. Park Ridge, IL • 847-825-6659 3
Candlelight Service of Lessons and Carols Freedom is Coming South African Adult Ensemble, Greta Ramsey, soloist Oh, freedom. Freedom is coming. Oh, yes, I know. Oh, Jesus. Jesus is coming. Oh, yes, I know. Second Reading Luke 1:26-38 Kara Gowlovech 26In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary. 28And he came to her and said, "Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you." 29But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. 30The angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. 33He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." 34Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I am a virgin?" 35The angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. 36And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. 37For nothing will be impossible with God." 38Then Mary said, "Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me ac- cording to your word." Then the angel departed from her. The reading concludes: The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 4 www.stlukespr.org
Sunday, December 12, 2021 Fantasy on Kingsfold arr. H. Dean Wagner (My Soul Proclaims Your Greatness) Celebration Ringers String Ensemble, Flute Third Reading Luke 2:1-7 Paul Rooney 1In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3All went to their own towns to be regis- tered. 4Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. 5He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. 6While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. 7And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. The reading concludes: The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gesu Bambino Pietro Yon Greta Ramsey, soloist; Lisa Ramsey, violin When blossoms flowered ‘mid the snows upon a winter night Was born the Child, the Christmas Rose, the King of Love and Light. Again the heart with rapture glows to greet the holy night That gave the world its Christmas Rose, the King of Love and Light. Let ev’ry voice acclaim His name, the grateful chorus swell, From paradise to earth he came that we with Him might dwell. O come let us adore Him. Christ the Lord. 205 N. Candlelight Service of Lessons and Carols Fourth Reading Luke 2:8-20 The Knapowski Family 8In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for see — I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: 11to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. 12This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger." 13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, 4"Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!" 15When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us." 16So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. 17When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; 18and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. 19But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. 20The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. The reading concludes: The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Candlelight Service of Lessons and Carols Fifth Reading John 1:1-5 Sylvia Xing 1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being 4in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. The reading concludes: The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Lo, How a Rose arr. Cathy Moklebust Celebration Ringers; String Ensemble The Winter Rose Joseph M. Martin Adult Ensemble, String Ensemble In the silence of the winter while stars shown high above, God sent from heaven’s garden a Rose to show His love. It opened in the dark of night while the world was fast asleep. So perfect was its beauty, it made the heavens weep. The angels paused to wonder upon that winsome sight. And kings and shepherds gathered to worship in its light. They all breathed in its beauty, a precious sweet perfume. And in the bleak midwinter the Rose began to bloom. O let us now remember when God put on the thorn. And Love restored the garden and the Winter Rose was born. 8 www.stlukespr.org
Sunday, December 12, 2021 Sending Prayer / Blessing The Work of Christmas The Rev. Dr. Howard Thurman,1899 — 1981 20th century theologian, preacher and civil rights leader When the song of the angels is stilled, When the star in the sky is gone, When the kings and princes are home, When the shepherds are back with their flock, The work of Christmas begins: To find the lost, to heal the broken, To feed the hungry, to release the prisoner, To rebuild the nations, To bring peace among [sisters and] brothers, To make music in the heart. So go forth this night into the world in peace to serve God with gladness. Hold fast to that which is good. Give to no one evil for evil. Support the weak. Comfort the afflicted. Confront the principalities and powers. Strive for justice and peace. And may our Gracious God bless and keep us all. Amen.
