Welcome to The Academy, We are so excited to see how your wonderfully different personalities can help shape The Academy culture. Our mission is for “every student to be positively engaged in their education and live a happy, fulfilling life.” This is where you, as a family and a student come in. We are the tool shed, you are the gardeners. We can only make your garden as beautiful as you will let us, so please immerse yourselves in The Academy and keep pursuing the pathway of your passions. Everything we do at The Academy has a purpose. To help you improve Personally; by understanding who you are, improving emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills. Mentally arming you for the world to come. To help you improve Professionally; by giving you life skills, qualifications and pathways to help you turn your passion into a profession. To help you improve your Passion; by breaking down the why and exploring how you can strengthen your skills and grow in love for what you do. If we don’t love what we do, then there is no point doing it. We embrace and empower individuality with our staff and students. A big paddock, strong fence philosophy applies; with our fences being Fun, Growth, Care and Focus - everything that fits within these fences is what makes The Academy a great place to be. The new and unique way you exhibit these characteristics is what is going to make it even better. Your time here isn’t long, so please make the most of it. No question is a dumb question and if you don’t agree or don’t understand we encourage you to speak up. This is your life, we are here to help guide you to the best possible version of that. This is going to be a great journey and we can’t wait to for you to become The Academy Men. See you soon. Luke Surace and Alex Rance Directors at The Academy

The last day of each term will finish at 2:30pm. Class starts at 9:00am therefore appropriate measures must be taken to arrive at school prior to this time with time to complete daily check-in (see Daily Check-In policy). For all matters concerning absenteeism, lateness and early departure issues please refer to and follow the relevant policies. Timetable While we endeavour to have a timetable that is consistent from week to week, there may be times throughout the year where the timetable changes. However, any changes will be made known and updated with plenty of notice. A copy of the timetable will be given to students at the beginning of the year, and throughout the year should any updates be required.
Policies and Procedures Absenteeism If your child is absent through illness or any other unforeseen reason, parents should notify their son’s teacher by completing the Student Absent/Late Arrival/Early Departure/Out-of-Uniform Form in the Parent Portal. This Form is also pinned as a top post in the The Academy Wangaratta Facebook Group. In cases when parents know that an illness or injury will prevent attendance for three or more days, we require you to complete the Form and supply a doctor's certificate. Lateness or Early Departure If your son is late through traffic or any other unforeseen reason or needs to leave The Academy early, you should notify your son’s teacher by completing the Student Absent/Late Arrival/Early Departure/Out-of-Uniform Form in the Parent Portal. If this is a regular occurrence the student will be unable to participate in The Academy’s High Performance Program until the problem has been rectified. You will be notified of your student being absent if not communicated otherwise during the first period of school.
Phone Whilst The Academy acknowledges that we live in a technology-rich world where mobile phones are an important tool, research has found that mobile phones can be disruptive and open to misuse in classrooms, potentially undermining students’ capacity to think, learn, remember, pay attention and regulate emotion. In line with the Victorian State Government’s policy on mobile phones at school, students who choose to bring mobile phones to school MUST have them switched off and securely stored during school hours, particularly during class times. Students may request that their phones be stored in the lockable administrative office, however it is their responsibility to collect them at the end of day. Failure to comply with this policy may result in a range of consequences, including confiscation, notifying parents, and loss of privileges within The Academy. Exceptions to this policy include those related to students’ health and wellbeing, however must be applied for in writing by the student’s parents/caregivers. Other exceptions include those related to students’ learning and managing of risk when students are offsite and will be advised by the discretion of The Academy teaching team. Uniform The Academy uniform is an integral part of who we are and wearing it correctly resembles professionalism and pride to be a student at The Academy. The official and compulsory school uniform items consist of: • The Academy polo shirt (every day) • The Academy training shorts • The Academy jacket • The Academy tracksuit pants • The Academy training singlet • The Academy training t-shirt • The Academy cap • The Academy beanie • The Academy hoodie/jumper • Appropriate runners for High Performance training (every day) Students can wear any combination of the above to school. If students are not wearing the official uniform of The Academy and choose to replace an item of clothing with non-official clothing, parents must complete Student Absent/Late Arrival/Early Departure/Out-of-Uniform Form in the Parent Portal stating why they are out of uniform for that day. If a student presents to school in any non-official clothing with no form submitted, the student will be given a warning the first time and from thereafter will be sent home and the parents will be notified.
Daily Check-In Students are required to complete check in every morning between 8:00am and 9:00am via the check-in iPads at The Academy. The check-in system allows The Academy team to track your son’s sleep patterns, moods, physical condition and attitude towards school in order to optimise your son’s education and overall wellness. This data will also be used in collaboration with you and your son’s football clubs as a way to ensure all parties involved in your son’s life are aware of these important details. Students Off-Campus As the Wangaratta campus does not have its own canteen, students, with the permission of the teachers, are allowed to leave the campus during break times to access the café at the nearby Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre (WSAC). Students will also regularly spend time off-campus to during their High Performance Program sessions (e.g. training at the WSAC), or during other approved off-campus experiences (e.g. excursions, etc.) Anytime students are off-campus, including daily travel to and from campus in The Academy uniform, it is vital that they are representing The Academy in a manner befitting our values. We aim to develop a good reputation amongst the local community for the way our students conduct themselves in public and need to ensure this is upheld at all times. Parent/Teacher Interviews Parent/Teacher Interviews are conducted at the end of Term 1 and Term 3. Parents will be notified and offered the opportunity to book an interview during available times. These interviews present an opportunity for our teachers to provide a more formal update on your son’s progress both academically and holistically, plus allow families the chance to ask any questions relating to their son’s experience at The Academy. Year 12 families can also expect to be invited to attend interviews during term 3 to discuss their son’s pathway plans. Please note that these interviews are optional, however The Academy may request attendance if it is required. Reports Bi-annual reports will be sent out throughout the year; at the end of Term 2 and Term 4. The school reports will encompass everything from academic progress in each subject, personality growth, and High Performance Program athletic profiling results. These reports are designed to track progress in all areas of your son’s experience at The Academy and provide a snapshot of the wonderful things they will be achieving.
Work Placement Students at The Academy, in both year levels, will undertake a 10-day work placement of their choice, occurring on Fridays only during the following periods: Year 11 Year 12 July 16th – September 13th (10 weeks) May 21st – June 18th (5 weeks) July 30th – August 27th (5 weeks) Work placements provide students the opportunity to develop key employability skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, communication, time management and organisation, and is an opportunity for students to explore future potential pathways and further discover their purpose. It is also the students’ responsibility, with the guidance and support of The Academy, to find and secure each work placement. This experience will be used as an opportunity to practice further vital employability skills, including networking and applying for employment.
The Academy High Performance Program Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre Being part The Academy High Performance Program means being a member of the Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre in which students will use the public gym and other facilities alongside everyday patrons of the Centre. Whilst at the Centre, students will abide by all rules and regulations at all times. Training Requirements Students will be required to bring the following gear to be able to participate in the High Performance Program: Monday: Swimming gear (shorts, towel, thongs, goggles, underwear) and drink bottle. Tuesday: Gym gear (shorts, singlet, hat, runners, boots, smart phone/device) and drink bottle. Wednesday: Gym gear (shorts, singlet, hat, runners, boots, smart phone/device), drink bottle. Thursday: Gym gear (shorts, singlet, hat, runners, boots, smart phone/device) and drink bottle. Friday: Appropriate uniform for Pilates and drink bottle. Athlete Profiling A physical screening report will be sent to your local football club multiple times throughout each year at The Academy. This allows us to have direct communication with your clubs regarding training, programs, and injuries allowing us to identify areas of improvement and manage injury/training loads. Running Tech Students undertake a 15-20min educational running technique session to improve speed, agility, change of direction, running efficiency all with the goal to improve performance on the field and reduce the risk of injury. Injury Management If a student isn’t able to complete a session due to injury, an individualised alternate program will be created for them across all elements of The High Performance Program. There will be a standard set for rehab day one. You will be working harder than the boys out on the track in order to reintegrate back into the main group in a fit and healthy condition. The process to request an injury management plan is as follows: • Student to make contact with either S&C coach/High Performance Manager at their campus to notify them of the injury. • Student then seeks external physiotherapy/medical treatment. • Parent goes to Parent Portal on The Academy website • Click link to Injury Report Form • Parent complete and submit the form • High Performance team will then use this information to design the rehabilitation program. • A generic program that does not involve the injured limb will be completed by the student until the Injury Report Form is submitted.
GPS Devices All SPT GPS units and accessories are owned by The Academy. Parents have signed The Academy Technology Usage Agreement form which details the correct use of this technology by their son. Students will use the GPSs throughout the year in a number of activities at The Academy. If students want to utilise the GPSs external to The Academy, they will have to go through the following process: • Make contact with High Performance Manager to arrange a booking. • GPS, bra and charger will then be booked out for allocated date. • Return date will be discussed and confirmed with student and High Performance Manager. • If any item is then not returned on the due date, parents will be contacted. • Charges will apply if student does not comply with The Academy Technology Usage Agreement and a $300 hold will be placed on the credit card and only released once all items are returned. Wellness Wellness is very important to us at The Academy. Each day, students will be required to complete wellness check-ins before 9am. To ensure students complete their check-in each day, we recommend students set a reminder on their phone that repeats every single day. Within the check in process there are 2 components: • The mental check-in, which goes through questions relating to how students are feeling and enjoying school as well as an opportunity to reflect on something they are grateful for. • The physical check-in looks more at how their body is coping with training and games, what their sleep is like and their availability to complete the day’s physical activities The reasons we stress the importance of the wellness check-in is because it provides both teaching and High Performance staff with valuable information that helps tailor the program delivered for that particular day.
General Information Weekly Assembly The Academy holds a weekly assembly attended by both year levels together. Assemblies are used to inform students about upcoming events, student news, important notices and updates, and to celebrate achievements and allocate chores. Chores There are 5 jobs/chores that are required to be completed by the students on any given week and are evenly rotated amongst the students. If the job/chore is not done to standard as voted by their peers and teachers at the weekly assembly, they will remain on the job/chore for another week. Launch Pad Launch Pad is the final phase of the journey at The Academy School delivered in the final term of Year 12. During Launch Pad students complete the Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation, aimed at preparing them for the next steps in their journey beyond The Academy, whether that be further study or an apprenticeship, and also general skills and knowledge that will seem them thrive in their adult life. Regardless of your son’s career intentions beyond The Academy, completing Launch Pad is a mandatory step in the student journey and is designed to assist students investigate and prepare for many different pathway options that they may pursue throughout life.
