March 1, 2022 MAUMEE MUSIC @ GATEWAY MIDDLE SCHOOL Hello Maumee Fifth Graders and Parents/ Guardians, In the Maumee City School system, students have the exciting opportunity to start band, orchestra or choir in 6th grade!! We have some IMPORTANT DATES TO SHARE about music opportunities for GMS: March 21-24-- Gateway MS Music Teachers will visit Wayne Trail Music Classes to share about music options at Gateway March 29- 5th Graders visit MHS PAC for a performance by MHS students during school March 29- 4-7pm Instrument Test Drive in MHS PAC (Come see, feel and try out as many instruments as you’d like- Bring a Parent!!) March 30 4-6pm Instrument Test Drive (Make up day if students are not ab Our hope is that MANY students will continue in the music programs offered at Gateway Middle School! Music classes meet every day. There are MANY benefits to music classes including improved social skills and academic performance. Plus, IT’S A LOT OF FUN!! :-) 6th graders have a choice in what music class they take. Their choices are: Band, Orchestra, Choir or Non-Music Elective. All other classes (math, science, etc) are scheduled for them. If a student would like to try two music classes, they should pick one for now and we will do our best to accommodate that opportunity later in 6th grade to alternate days. Students & Parents may look at instruments at Rettig Music (5950 Airport Hwy- Across from Old Navy), All Star Music (2025 S. Byrne, Toledo 43614) or Instrument Care Center (319 S. Main St, Findlay OH 45840). For instrument purchase, we recommend any of the stores listed above, but you are welcome to shop around. However, we do ask that you be careful if purchasing online. No oddly colored instruments: pink, purple, green etc are not allowed! These are typically low quality instruments that may be intended as toys. Ask a music teacher before purchasing online-- there are “deals” to be found on used instruments, but there are also many “rip-offs” online for cheap!! Please reach out to one of us if looking to purchase used instruments-- we’d be happy to offer an opinion and help you find something used that is a quality instrument! Most students will purchase or rent their own instruments. However, if a family is unable to purchase an instrument, please contact one of us- we can help! We have a limited number of school owned instruments. We can’t guarantee that we can provide your first choice of instrument, but we are certain we can provide you with something to play if you are unable to purchase/ rent on your own! In Maumee, we start: Band Instrument Choices: Orchestra Instrument Choices: Flute Trumpet Violin Clarinet Trombone Viola Alto Saxophone Baritone Cello Percussion (bells & drum pad) French Horn String Bass (Students can switch to Tuba, French Horn, Oboe, Bassoon, etc later) BOLD Instruments are preferred instruments for beginners! By the time school starts in August 2022, your child will need 2 things if they are joining band or orchestra: an instrument and their music book. Choir students do not need to purchase a book. Orchestra uses “Essential Elements Book 1” for Strings Band uses “Habits of a Successful Beginner Band Musician” (Green Book) Remember: All 5th grade students will need to make their choice between band, choir, orchestra or non-music so GMS Counselors Mrs. Potts & Mr. Tapley can get them scheduled for classes at Gateway! Questions? Email us (preferred) or call Gateway 419-893-3386. Mrs. Potts and Mr. Tapley will be the ones who actually schedule your student’s classes– we just show you what the music options are!
