The successful student will leave the course with a fundamental understanding of the topics enumerated in the course description, in addition
to the applications of those topics to business and finance. This includes conceptual aspects as well as computational aspects of the course.
The student will be able to analyze a standard problem and present a logical argument to determine its solution. We expect the student to
engage the material honestly and thoughtfully.

Prerequisites

Students should have a minimum of 70% in Grade 12 Advanced Functions or the equivalent from his/her corresponding secondary school.
Students who do not satisfy these prerequisites are allowed to take the course ``at their own risk,'' with the expectation that the student will fill
any gaps in their learning on their own time. Students taking this course without satisfying the prerequisites are not required to submit a
prerequisite waiver.

Course Mee ngs
The course will consist of weekly lectures and tutorials.

Lectures

Lectures are an opportunity for students to learn the material, and to ask questions. Students are required to attend the lecture section of their
official enrollment. If a student wishes to change their lecture section attendance, then students are required to make the change of
lecture section official by contacting the UTM Registrar's Office.

This will be necessary in order to write the tests.

Tutorials

Tutorials will consist of problem solving sessions, and represent an opportunity for students to receive feedback and assistance on their work.
As a general rule, students should feel free to attend any and as many tutorial sections as they choose, so long as this does not interfere with
the attendance of officially registered students. Tutorial rooms often change before the beginning of term, both in September and January. Be
sure to check the official timetable (https://student.utm.utoronto.ca/timetable/?course=mat133?session=20189) before your first tutorial to double

For this reason, all students are required to enrol in a tutorial. Note that you may change the tutorial in which you are officially enrolled in as
often as you like before September 19, 2018.

Instructor/TA Office Hours

You are not required to attend the office hours for your instructor, and should feel free to visit as many as you like. However, you should prepare
ahead of time to make effective use of your time.

Math Help Centre

The Math Help Centre is run by TAs from multiple different mathematics courses, including each of the first year calculus courses. They will be
happy to help you with mathematics problems, regardless of which course you are from. It is located in DH 2027 and the hours can be found
here. (https://mcs.utm.utoronto.ca/mathhelpcentre)

Evalua on
Evaluation will consist of four components: the CRA, six (6) written assignments, four (4) term tests, and one (1) final examination.

Calculus Readiness Assessment

The Calculus Readiness Assessment (CRA) is a written test of your pre-calculus knowledge. It will be held Friday, September 21, 2018 from
1500 - 1700. Rooms will be announced closer to the date of the test. The assessment is based on secondary school material (excluding
calculus), and its purpose it to help you measure your readiness for university math courses. Your mark on the CRA will count as 6% of your
course mark. More information regarding the CRA will be made available closer to the date of the test.

Assignments

There will be six (6) assignments posted regularly in each academic term. As per the letter of intent -- referred to in the research
statement -- students are divided into either Group A (even student numbers) or Group B (odd student numbers). Both groups will have access
to the assignments and solutions when posted. Group A students will be required to submit their work for evaluation in the Fall term (Sept-Dec),
while Group B will be required to submit their work for evaluation in the Winter term (Jan-Apr).

Each assignment will be worth 2% of the final mark. Assignments must be printed off from the website, and solutions supplied in the provided
space. Assignments will be due via Crowdmark on the dates below:

https://q.utoronto.ca/courses/56666/assignments/syllabus#exam 3/7

Assignment 6 Wed, Nov 28 Wed, Mar 27

You are encouraged to work together on assignments, but are required to write and submit your work independently of other classmates.

Term Tests

There will be two term tests each term for a total of four (4) Term Tests. They will be held on Fridays from 1500-1700, on the following days:

    Friday, October 19, 2018,
    Friday, November 23, 2018,
    Friday, February 1, 2019,
    Friday, March 15, 2019.

Your worst term test will be weighted at 6%, with all other term tests worth 12%

Missing a Term Test

If you are forced to miss a term test because of an illness or other extenuating circumstance, you must alert the course coordinator Tyler
Holden within 24 hours of the term test, and provide supporting documentation no later than one week after the term test. In particular, the
university has very precise procedures regarding documentation of sick notes (http://illnessverification.utoronto.ca/) , and a form for
extenuating circumstances.

Failure to adhere to any of these policies will result in your term test being assigned a grade of zero (0).

Students granted an exemption will have their marking scheme adjusted as follows:

One Exempted Test: The other three term tests will be reweighted to 12% each, with a 46% final exam.
Two or More Exempted Tests: Each written test will be worth 12%, with the weight from all missed tests reallocated to the final exam.

Final Examina on

The final examination will take place during the August 2019 examination period and will be three (3) hours long. It will be cumulative, covering
all materials covered in the lectures, tutorials, and assigned work.

Evalua on Scheme

6 % CRA + 12 % Assignments + 42% Term Tests + 40% Final Exam.

[Mandatory] Tyler Holden's notes will be the primary resource for this class. All required material is present in these notes. These notes
can be printed at home or through a printing house, but students in the past have had problems because the notes look too similar to a
traditional textbook. If you would like to purchase a printed copy of the notes, the bookstore (https://uoftbookstore.com/) has them for sale
    at a reasonable price.
[Optional] Any other first year financial mathematics textbook for exercise problems. One option includes:
Introductory Mathematical Analysis, (any edition) by Haeussler, Paul, and Wood.
In particular, note that the optional text is in its 14th edition. Older versions of these books are almost identical, and significantly more
affordable. As this last textbook is entirely optional, we recommend that students not buy this textbook, or at least wait until the
second week before deciding whether or not to buy a textbook.

Problem Sets

The end of each chapter from the notes includes exercise problems. These are designed to be practice questions specifically tailored to class
material, and you should answer them all to ensure your understanding of the material. Students are obviously free to do exercises from the
optional textbook as well. If you are ever in doubt whether an exercise problem from another source is appropriate, do not hesitate to ask your
TA in tutorial.

succeed in their math courses at UTM. These appointments are generally short and offered on a first come, first served basis, so be sure to
arrive early with specific questions in mind. The math drop-in schedule is available on the RGASC website
(https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/asc/appointments-undergraduate) .

Booked Appointments: You can consult with a Math and Scientific Literacy Strategist about techniques for improving your learning
approaches and making them work for you so that you succeed in your courses. Strategists can also help you with lab reports, problem-solving,
and test preparation. Book an appointment through the RGASC website (https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/asc/appointments-undergraduate) .

Research
This year, MAT133Y5Y will be part of a research study designed to test the efficacy of assignments in large first year courses. More information
can be found in the letter of intent . During the CRA, you will be given an opportunity to consent or deny participation within the study. Your
consent will be held in confidence from your instructors and simply allows the researchers to use your data. All data will be anonymized and
stored in a secure location on campus. Neither your grades, nor the evaluation scheme of the course will depend on your consent to the study.
