Biloxi Public Schools 2021-2022 Plan for Success PAGE 1 OF 2 Goals of Biloxi Public School District during the 2021-2022 school year Provide a safe learning environment for all staff and students. Maintain high academic expectations, rigorous curriculum, and a focus on student achievement. Raise graduation rate to 90% or above (currently 87%). Maintain and improve upon our A rating as a school district and at each of our schools. Improve culture and support of extracurricular activities across the school district. Disclaimer As we learned during the 2020-2021 school year, all plans are fluid and may change with updated guidance or changes in the number of cases in the local area. The information listed below will be re-evaluated and changed as new guidance is released from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Mississippi Department of Health (MSDH), Mississippi Department of Education (MDE), and the Office of the Governor. 2020-2021 Statistics During Semester 2 of the 2020-2021 school year (January 2021 – May 2021), the Biloxi Public School District had 93.3% of students attending in-person instruction daily (approximately 5,462 students). During the months of April and May, the percentage of positive Covid-19 cases among students attending in- person at all BPS campuses was 0.2%, meaning that 99.8% of in-person students were not impacted by Covid- 19 during those months. Vaccination Fair The Biloxi Public School District will conduct a vaccination fair on multiple dates during June and July 2021 to provide Covid-19 vaccinations to all qualifying students and staff (ages 12 and above). 2021-2022 Learning Environments Grades 7-12 (Biloxi High School and Biloxi Junior High School) Traditional (in-person) learning environment Grades K-6 (Back Bay, Biloxi Upper, Gorenflo, Nichols, North Bay, and Popp’s Ferry) Traditional (in-person) learning environment Virtual Learning available to those students qualifying with a medical diagnosis preventing the student from attending in-person learning due to Covid-19. Medical diagnosis does not extend to other household members. Application must be submitted to school principal Medical documentation required Parent meeting required with the school to discuss and review the documentation and application Grade PreK (Nichols) Traditional (in-person) learning environment Mitigation Strategies Masks The use of masks will be re-evaluated and updated as new guidance is released by the CDC, MSDH, and the Office of the Governor. Biloxi Public Schools 2021-2022 Plan for Success PAGE 2 OF 2 Distancing Classroom distancing will follow the CDC recommendation of 3 feet. Cleaning – will remain a focus throughout 2021-2022 School buses, classrooms, cafeterias, high touch, and high traffic areas will be thoroughly cleaned multiple times throughout the day. Deep cleaning of all areas will occur at the conclusion of each school day. Hand Washing & Hand Sanitizing Proper hand washing will be demonstrated and stressed at all campuses. Bathrooms will be adequately supplied with hand soap. Hand Sanitizer will be available in classrooms and throughout campuses. Crowd Prevention Procedures for arrival, departure, and classroom transitions will be established at each campus to minimize crowding. Breakfast and Lunch Students will be distanced to allow for mask removal and a safer eating environment. Schools will continue to utilize multiple spaces as needed to provide distancing during breakfast/lunch (cafeteria, classrooms, gymnasium, etc.). Visitors on campus Visitors are required to wear a mask while on campus (may change with future guidance) Visitors to campus are limited to check-ins/check-outs, scheduled meetings, and scheduled events. Wellness / Covid-19 Related Illness (contact your school nurse with questions) Staff/Students should not report to school when sick. Positive cases of Covid-19 Must isolate for 10 days and may return to school at the conclusion of the isolation period if symptoms are improved and individual is fever free for 24 hours. Close Contacts Fully vaccinated staff/students and those that have been positive within the last 3 months are not considered close contacts if exposed to a positive case of Covid-19. Unvaccinated staff/students must quarantine for a minimum of: 7 days if close contact is symptom free and provides a negative PCR test recorded on days 5, 6, or 7 10 days if close contact is symptom free and was not tested 14 days if the positive case is within the same household Students identified as close contacts will continue daily instruction in a distance learning environment to prevent learning loss. Special Education and English Language Learner Services All services will be provided in accordance with applicable laws and guidelines. Extracurricular Activities The Biloxi Public School District will follow the guidance of the Mississippi High School Activities Association, the MDE, and the MSDH in reference to extracurricular activities. The low rate of transmission is due to mitigation procedures and vaccinations. Mitigation strategies will continue into the 2021-2022 school year and will be adjusted as guidance changes. I am incredibly appreciative of the seriousness with which the district has taken in-person learning. At no point in time have I ever felt that either myself or my child could be at risk due to efforts not made by the district. In my opinion, in-person learning is essential.
