De La Salle College “Oaklands” 2020 Summer School Program (UPDATED APRIL, 2020) 131 Farnham Avenue Toronto, Ontario M4V 1H7 UPDATED APRIL 2020 De La Salle College is pleased to offer Summer School once again. The College is committed to offering all courses offered through this program, provided there is adequate enrolment. The health and safety of our students is our number one priority; while the preferred method of delivery will be in person classes at school, De La Salle College will take its direction from public health officials on whether it is safe to do so. If classes are not offered at school, they will be offered online. A modified schedule will take place if courses move online. Students will receive a full refund if a class is cancelled due to insufficient enrolment. These courses are designed for students who are enrolled at De La Salle College. Grade 9 MPM1D PRINCIPLES OF MATHEMATICS, ACADEMIC (1.0 Credit) This course enables students to develop an understanding of mathematical concepts related to algebra, analytic geometry, and measurement and geometry through investigation, the effective use of technology, and abstract reasoning. Students will investigate relationships, which they will then generalize as equations of lines, and will determine the connections between different representations of a linear relation. They will also explore relationships that emerge from the measurement of three-dimensional figures and two-dimensional shapes. Students will reason mathematically and communicate their thinking as they solve multi-step problems. Cost: $1 375.00 ENG1D ENGLISH, ACADEMIC (1.0 Credit) This course is designed to develop the oral communication, reading, writing, and media literacy skills that students need for success in their secondary school academic programs and in their daily lives. Students will analyse literary texts from contemporary and historical periods, interpret informational and graphic texts, and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms. An important focus will be on the use of strategies that contribute to effective communication. The course is intended to prepare students for the Grade 10 academic English course, which leads to university or college preparation courses in Grades 11 and 12. Grade 10 CHV2O CIVICS, OPEN (0.5 Credit) This course explores what it means to be an informed, participating citizen in a democratic society. Students will learn about the elements of democracy in local, national, and global contexts, about political reactions to social change, and about political decision-making processes in Canada. They will explore their own and others’ ideas about civics questions and learn how to think critically about public issues and react responsibly to them. Prerequisite: None GLC2O CAREER STUDIES, OPEN (0.5 Credit) This course teaches students how to develop and achieve personal goals for future learning, work, and community involvement. Students will assess their interests, skills, and characteristics and investigate current economic and workplace trends, work opportunities, and ways to search for work. The course explores postsecondary learning and career options, prepares students for managing work and life transitions, and helps students focus on their goals through the development of a career plan. Students will explore quadratic relations and their applications; solve and apply linear systems; verify properties of geometric figures using analytic geometry; and investigate the trigonometry of triangles. Students will reason mathematically and communicate their thinking as they solve multi-step problems. Grade 11 SPH3U PHYSICS, UNIVERSITY PREPARATION (1.0 Credit) This course develops students’ understanding of the basic concepts of physics. Students will explore kinematics, with an emphasis on linear motion; different kinds of forces; energy transformations; the properties of mechanical waves and sound; and electricity and magnetism. They will enhance their scientific investigation skills as they test laws of physics. In addition, they will analyse the interrelationships between physics and technology, and consider the impact of technological applications of physics on society and the environment. Cost: $1 375.00 Grade 12 ENG4U ENGLISH (1.0 Credit) This course emphasizes the consolidation of the literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. Students will analyse a range of challenging literary texts from various periods, countries, and cultures; interpret and evaluate informational and graphic texts; and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms. An important focus will be on using academic language coherently and confidently, selecting the reading strategies best suited to particular texts and particular purposes for reading, and develop- ing greater control in writing. The course is intended to prepare students for university, college, or the workplace. Cost: $1 375.00 MHF4U ADVANCED FUNCTIONS (1.0 Credit) This course extends students’ experience with functions. Students will investigate the properties of polynomial, rational, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions; develop techniques for combining functions; broaden their understanding of rates of change; and develop facility in applying these concepts and skills. Students will also refine their use of the mathematical processes necessary for success in senior mathematics. This course is intended both for students taking the Calculus and Vectors course as a prerequisite for a university program and for those wishing to consolidate their understanding of mathematics before proceeding to any one of a variety of university programs. HSB4U CHALLENGE AND CHANGE IN SOCIETY (1.0 Credit) ONLINE OFFERING This course focuses on the use of social science theories, perspectives, and methodologies to investigate and explain shifts in knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviour and their impact on society. Students will critically analyse how and why cultural, social, and behavioural patterns change over time. They will explore the ideas of social theorists and use those ideas to analyse causes of and responses to challenges such as technological change, deviance, and global inequalities. Students will explore ways in which social science research methods can be used to study social change. Prerequisite: Any university or university/college preparation course in social sciences and humanities, English, or Canadian and world studies Date: Monday, June 29th, 2020 to Friday, September 4th, 2020 Time: ONLINE OFFERING Teacher: To be announced. Cost: $1 375.00 De La Salle College will be offering HSB4U online throughout the summer term. Students will gain access to the course beginning on Monday, June 29th, 2020. All course work must be completed by Friday, August 28th, 2020. Course access will close on Friday August 28th at 11:59pm. Work will not be accepted after this date and students will be assigned a grade based on the course work submitted. Specific details will be communicated to students when they receive course confirmation in May, 2020. All students will be required to write an in person final exam the week of August 31st. Students who enroll in this online course, must have access to their delasalle.ca email account as all correspondence for the course will be communicated through the school account. **Subject to Change due to Covid-19**

De La Salle College Summer School Attendance Policy: Students are expected to be in class every day during the summer term. Missing one full day of school during the summer term is the equivalent of missing 5 classes during the school year. Therefore, students who have two or more unexcused absences may become ineligible to receive the credit. It is strongly recommended that students obtain a medical note for any absence during the summer term. Absences that are accompanied by a doctor’s note will not be counted as an unexcused absence. Students will not be eligible for a refund if they become ineligible for a credit. Attendance policy will be adjust if courses are delivered online. Please note: Behavioural expectations as described in the Student Agenda are to be followed during the summer school term. De La Salle College “Oaklands” reserves the right to cancel a course if there is insufficient enrolment. If a course is cancelled, students will be notified and the deposit refunded if an alternate course is not selected. Moreover, all student applications must be approved by the Principal of the College. Please return your registration form and payment by Monday, June 1st, 2020 by email to studentservices@delasalle.ca Cheques made payable to De La Salle College should be mailed to the school to confirm registration N.B.
