Understanding the CAO Application System
The Application System for Higher Education Courses – Central Applications Office
CAO System: How it works… • Aims to give applicant their highest choice • 2 lists of 10 choices • 10 choices at Level 8 • 10 choices at Level 6/7
Making an application • Applicants are encouraged to apply online. It opened on the 6th November • The website address is www.cao.ie • Applying online is cheaper and it prevents many of the errors commonly associated with completing a paper application form. • It is €30 to apply online before 20th January 2018 and €45 up to 1st February 2018.
Application Form: • The first part of Application Form is self explanatory. Biographical details - Information which identifies the applicant. Applicant to carefully enter details such as name (as on birth cert), up to date address, date of birth, schools attended etc.
CAO Application Number • When applying online the application number will appear on the Receipt of Online Application. • This number will also be texted to the applicant if applicant has ticked permission for this. • This number is private and it will be used in every correspondence between applicant and the CAO for the rest of the year.
Second part of Application Special Categories • Mature Students • All 6th Year applicants will not be required to complete Part B of the application form
Course Choices • 10 Choices can be listed for Level 8 • 10 Choices can be listed for Levels 6/7
National Framework of Qualifications
Ladder of Progression
. Level 6 & 7 Courses Level 8 Courses Ordinary Degrees (7) Higher Honours Degrees (8) Certificates (6) Up to 10 Course Choices Up to 10 Course Choices
Whether you apply for 1 or 20 courses – same fee. The courses are clearly labelled in the CAO Handbook, i.e. Level 6, 7 or 8. N.B. – Care must be taken with courses marked ‘Restricted’. These courses cannot normally be applied for after February 1st due to extra assessments required.
Two Applications on One Form • It is possible to receive an offer on both lists • You may then decide to accept either your Level 7/6 or your Level 8 offer.
Course Choices Level 8 Hons Degrees
Course Choices Level 7 Ordinary Degrees/Level 6 Higher Certificates
Researching courses • Research each course carefully from prospectus, websites and visiting college etc. • Consult with the Guidance Counsellor • Discuss with family and friends • Encourage your child to research information about the course/courses he/she is interested in and put a list together in order of preference • Websites: CAO, Qualifax.ie , Careersportal.ie, College websites etc. 21 21
Order of Preference • Course choices for each list must be put in order of preference • 1st July 17.15 is the final date and time for deciding this • Each list is considered separately • An offer may be made from both lists • Only one of these can be accepted
Order of Preference 1 2 Dream Courses 3 4 5 6 Realistic Courses 7 8 9 Banker Courses 10
Order of Preference • If you learn nothing else from this presentation let it be this... • Your child must place their course choices in genuine order of preference! • To do otherwise is a grave mistake.
Statement of Course Choice The Statement is posted in February, will also be emailed to applicant The Statement is important for three reasons: 1. The Statement of Course Choices includes notification of your CAO application number. 2. The Statement of Course Choices lists the courses that you have applied for. 3. If you have made any mistake or omission in your course choices then now is the time to rectify your error. • Applicant to check are all the courses shown and in the correct order? • Are all the course codes correct? • Are all exams taken mentioned?
Statement of Course Choice • Included with the Statement of Application Record will be a Change of Mind form. You may use this to change the order of your course choices and/or to introduce new courses, subject to the restrictions detailed in the Handbook. • It is safer to use the Change of Mind Facility on the website than to use a paper Change of Mind form.
Changing your mind! • Students may change their mind on-line as often as they like up to the 1st July • They can add new courses and alter the order of preferences at no extra cost up to this date
What is needed to be offered a college place? 1.The college matriculation requirement 2. The specific course requirement 3.The points requirement – calculated from a total of the best six Leaving Certificate results
Example 1. College Requirement e.g. College X requires 6 passes including two H5s and passes in Irish, English and another language (unless a student is exempt from Irish and/or a third language) 2. Course Requirement e.g. Veterinary Medicine: The above requirements, in addition a minimum H4 Chemistry and O6 Maths 3. Points requirement e.g. 500 points
What is needed to be offered a college place: Restricted Courses Courses that may require another assessment • HPAT for Medicine (CAO) • Architecture • Art and Design • Music • Drama • Photography You must apply for these before Feb 1st
What are ‘Points’? • Used to decide who gets a place • What determines the points? 1. Number of Applicants 2. Random selection 3. Performance of Applicants
How the ‘points’ requirement for each course work? • Each college decides on how many places they wish to offer for each course. The number of applications will be determined by the number of applicants each year, i.e. popularity of the course. Places will be offered to applicants in order of merit as determined by their points. The published ‘points’ for a course are the points achieved by the last applicant/s offered a place that year in each course i.e. everyone offered a place had at least those points Thus the minimum ‘points’ can change from year to year
How the system works Example DCU Business Course: 3 places Students: Tom....... 507 Fred...... 302 Alex...... 301 Declan... 254 Jim........ 200
2017 Science in Maynooth MH201 - 3 places Students: Gill....... 422 Fred...... 370 Mary..... 368 Points: 366* Paul ..... 300 Jim........ 251
Note: ~ Points are just one requirement. ~ Students must also meet: ✓ matriculation requirements i.e. Pass Maths/English/Irish/Language ✓ course requirements e.g. H4 Maths ✓ ‘’other’’ requirements e.g. Portfolio …….if they are to receive an offer.
Maths Bonus Points • Bonus points were introduced for Honours Maths in 2012. An extra 25 points will be awarded to grade 6 and above in Higher Level Maths results. • The bonus points are added to the Maths result first and then a student’s best six results are calculated.
Accepting an offer • In the week following the release of the Leaving Certificate results CAO will post a communication to all applicants • CAO gives a week for acceptances to be made • Online acceptances possible from any location, i.e. if student is away • CAO numbers are needed to access offers and to make acceptances on line • Offers may also be accepted by post
Communicating With CAO • The easiest and most efficient way to communicate with CAO is by using the 'Contact Us' facility on the CAO website. • Applicant to always quote CAO application number in any communication with CAO. • If posting something to CAO, applicant should always obtain a certificate of posting at the post office. This is a free service.
