COURSE CATALOGUE SWOT
Course catalogue: Strengths • Open catalogue, easy access to anyone • A wide collection of courses to choose from (number and variety) • Wider opportunities for course providers • Direct, quick process to publish and edit
Course catalogue: Weaknesses • Too many courses/sessions? • Irrelevant courses • No quality control • For course providers harder to get visibility
Course catalogue: Opportunities • Erasmus+ funding growing: more mobilities across Europe are getting funded • Number of reviews increasing community-based quality control • Visits to the platform are constantly increasing
Course catalogue: Threats • Too many courses: “to die from success” • Missing a critical mass of reviews • Course providers skipping the rules loosing the credibility • Course providers not ‘investing’ in the catalogue
COURSE CATALOGUE ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS
KA1 Courses: Quality Requirements • Course quality is evaluated through the user rating mechanism (5-star rating & reviews) • Currently approx. 1307 reviews have been made for 603 courses • Additional reporting mechanism (inappropriate content, etc.) • Currently approx. 188 reports • Not all are “real” problem cases • For users: tutorial on "How to select a teacher training course abroad” www.schooleducationgateway.eu/en/pub/resources/tutorials/how_to_select_a_teacher_traini.htm • Especially for course providers: Updated “Terms and conditions”, including acceptable use policy www.schooleducationgateway.eu/en/pub/opportunities/terms_and_conditions.htm
Handling users’ concerns and problem cases • User: “I can’t reach the course provider” No particular action • User: “I had a bad course experience” • Review the course • Contact the National Agency • Course descriptions: insufficient information; suspiciously many sessions… contact the course provider and asking to correct • Course descriptions: irrelevant topic or other major problem block the item • Other means: Official letter / Definitive blocking
Upcoming tools upgrade: update 1 Issue: Proposed solution: The current catalogue is date- • Show max. 1 session per month focused (e.g. the search results per course provider shown the courses according to • The default “sort by” will be the dates) based on rating (not dates) To increase the visibility of the • Mandatory use of filters or free course offers, some course text search providers announce more sessions than what they are actually organising.
Upcoming tools upgrade: update 2 Issue: Proposed solution: Concerns about the quality of the • Show a course provider rating courses based on all the ratings on SEG User Survey 2017 individual courses on the The “Reputation of the course organisation page and on every provider” matters to the users: course page it got a score 5.3 (on scale 1 to 6, six being “very important”). From a survey for the participants of the MOOC “Erasmus+ funding opportunities for schools” (N=765)
More ideas and suggestions!? • All courses to be pre-checked before publishing? • Providing a review obligatory for all E+ KA1 participants? • Stricter monitoring of content and enforcement the terms and conditions? • New technical functionalities? Welcome to the two discussion rounds this afternoon 15:00-15:45 | 16:00-16:45
