WHY TUTORIALS? 1. We want every student to have an adult champion. The Tutor will know their student well, will set goals with their student and their whanau, will monitor their progress and celebrate their successes. 2. We want to have dedicated time for the students to, with support, work independently to become competently literate in reading, writing, maths and technology so that they can excel in their modules and beyond school. 4
PUNA AKO – TUTORIALS Every student every day will be welcomed into a comfortable, warm, studious learning environment. Every Tutor will: Build a positive learning relationship with their students. Build and maintain positive relationships with whanau. Monitor the students’ progress regularly and let the whanau know of any concerns. Conduct Learning Dialogues with the students and their whanau. Have an in-depth conversation with every student at least once a fortnight to review progress of personalised plan. Make sure the students pick up every possible opportunity to find success at school. Build a warm whaanau relationship within their tutorial group. Every student will have: A Personalised Learning Plan negotiated with their whaanau and their Tutor. An individual enrolment in ‘Write That Essay’ a well-researched programme designed to improve student writing. An individual enrolment in ‘Education Perfect’ – a well- researched programme designed to improve students Maths capabilities. Regular Learning Dialogues with their Tutor and whanau. Opportunities and time to complete assessments with the support of teachers. A Tutor who will monitor their success by having an in-depth conversation at least once a fortnight. Details: The school is divided into four whanau: Hakanoa, Waikare, Waahi, Kimihia Each whaanau (about 60 students and 5 Tutors) will gather together to start the day with a karakia and a waiata. There will be warm drinks and food for the students to share. The students will then work with their own Tutors and Tutorial groups (about 10 students in each) to plan what they need to work on to create success for themselves according to their personalised plans. The aim is to give each student a sense of belonging and a sense of purpose about coming to Huntly College every day. 5
WHY ‘I AM’ MODULES? We want learning at Huntly College to be engaging, challenging and meaningful to our students. Our Director of Curriculum will ensure that: 1. In the Junior school all disciplines i.e Maths / English / Social Studies / Science / Technology / Physical Education are covered. 2. In the Senior school NCEA standards are rigorously delivered and assessed. 6
HE AHA AHAU? – “I AM” MODULES Aim – Quality teaching, quality learning, quality credits. Every student will choose 4 Modules a term which have been designed to IGNITE their passion for learning. Every student will have the opportunity to EXPLORE, THINK CRITICALLY and use their imaginations to CREATE. Each Module will start with “I am” - Some examples: ‘I am a photographer’, ‘I am a film-maker’, ‘I am a personal trainer’ ‘I am a builder’, ‘I am a statistician’, ‘I am a creative dancer’, ‘I am a rapper / poet / lyricist’, ‘I am a jazz musician’, ‘I am a media designer’, ‘I am a politician’; ‘I am an entrepreneur.’ In these Modules, the students will: Be able to choose a Module that excites them. Be taught the knowledge, skills and dispositions required to achieve success as ‘the builder’ or ‘the media designer.’ Have the time to meet with people and visit people who are already successful in their areas. Have the time to be creative and with support become the film-maker or entrepreneur or physicist, etc. they want to be. Have the opportunity at the end of each term to showcase their work to their whaanau. Details: 4 Modules per term Two levels of Modules – Foundation and Advanced. Year 11-13 Senior students choose Modules for Terms 1, 2 and 3 and then use Term 4 to study for external exams. Will choose the Advanced courses. NCEA – 3-5 credits per Module. Year 11 – 80 credits over the year. Year 12 -13 – 60 credits over the year. Year 13 students need 14 credits for 3 subjects to gain University Entrance. Year 9-10 Choose 4 Modules for Term 1, 2, 3 and 4. Will choose the Foundation courses (unless they already have expertise and are ready for the Advanced course.) HCEA – 3-5 credits per Module. 7 7
WHY PATHWAYS? We want students to be well prepared to face the challenges of University, other Tertiary Institutions and the world of work. Here is the opportunity for them to try out new things, take risks and challenge themselves while still at school so that when they do leave they leave with confidence, dignity and options. 8
NGAA ARA WHAKAMUA - PATHWAYS Every student will have the opportunity to choose a course of study that will progress their personal pathway. OPPORTUNITY 1 - School Based - Services Pathway - Trades Pathway - Outdoor Education Pathway - Hospitality Pathway OPPORTUNITY 2 - GATEWAY OPPORTUNITY 3 - External - WINTEC Courses - Taratahi OPPORTUNITY 4 - Correspondence Courses or University Courses OPPORTUNITY 5 - Group projects that will have impact on the school, the community and the world OPPORTUNITY 6 - Scholarship – Senior Students focus on rigorous scholarship learning in preparation for external scholarship exams. Details: The students will: Negotiate an appropriate pathway with their whanau and Tutors. Spend one term in each of the Pathways they choose. Work with Tutors to keep a personal record of their Pathways learning. The Tutors will: Spend time with students negotiating appropriate pathways. Monitor the students on a Wednesday to ensure progress. Support students individually to keep a personal record of their work so that it is of a standard for CV’s and employers. 9
WHY SPORTS / CULTURAL / LEADERSHIP? We want to encourage EVERY student to participate, have fun, learn to lead, learn to follow, learn to be part of groups and teams, learn to compete. 10
TE PUAWAITANGA - SPORTS / CULTURE / LEADERSHIP Every student will have the opportunity to participate in the cultural and sporting life of the school. These are the opportunities to have fun, build relationships with students and coaches, develop the confidence to participate and build leadership and competence in particular sports and cultural activities. Check out the leadership opportunities below: SPORTING OPPORTUNITIES: Basketball, Rugby, Football, Volleyball, Hockey, Golf, Waka Ama, Netball (and other sports if there is enough interest.) CULTURAL OPPORTUNITIES: Kapa haka, Drama / Dance / Debating (other cultural opportunities where there is enough interest.) LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES: Board of Trustees Student Representative 1 student from the Year 9-13 group is eligible to stand for election each year to represent student voice on the Board of Trustees. Head Students 4 students from the Year 13 group to lead the whole school. Whaanau Leaders 8 students to work with Whaanau Leaders to support the learning in the Tutorials. Associate Leaders 1 student per Tutorial Group to assist the Tutor in ensuring quality learning in the Tutorial Group. Student Council 2 students from each Year level in the school to support the growth of the whole school. 11
